FESTIVE HUES: People participate in a rally to mark Milad-un-Nabi in the Old City. (Below) Muslim and Hindu women at an event to celebrate Pongal and Milad-unNabi at the BJP office on Wednesday

of 18, a police official noted. Officials pegged the smaller and unregulated rallies of varying sizes in the west zone to at least 20. Mohammed Waseem, a resident of Road Number 7 in Banjara Hills, said he saw a Milad procession for the first time in 20 years near his house. Until

now, this practice was limited to festivals such as Vinayak Chathurthi, Bonalu and Hanuman Jayanthi. The procession began

from Masjid-e-Barkatvilla on the main road. Around 150 youth were dancing to tunes from a mixer which was powered by a mobile

generator, Waseem said. Many residents observed that green flags and buntings dotted Road Numbers 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 12, a trend which has gained momentum recently . Jamia Nizamia, an important Islamic seminary in the city , had issued a fatwa recently denouncing loud music, DJs, dancing and inconveniencing the public in general on the occasion of the Prophets birth anniversary and advised restraint in celebrations, a view which resonated with Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen supremo Asaduddin Owaisi at a public meeting in Darussalaam on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday . However, the missive was largely ignored. The Old City also saw its share of increased religiosity . Markazi Anjuman-e-Quadria (MAQ), an umbrella body of 22 Muslim organisations, set up 13 stages in various parts of town as against four last year. Apart from a procession from Mecca Masjid to Haj House organised by Sunni United Forum of India, another procession was organised in Yakutpura by MAQ.

Teenager murdered, body dumped in nala

Hyderabad: The body of a 15-year-old teenager, who went missing four days ago, was found in a nala at Yakutpura on Wednesday . Mohammed Abdul Nawaz from Chawni in Yakutpura had been missing since the past four days and a complaint was lodged in this regard by his brother Pervez at the Rein Bazar police station. When Pervez called up Nawazs friends to enquire, one of them said he had been last seen with his friend Ali Bam. Pervez also came to know that Ali had been suspecting Nawaz in the recent theft of Rs 7,000 cash from his house. On further enquiries, one of the locals informed him that Nawaz had been murdered by four of his friends and the body dumped in a manhole on the edge of a nala at Bada Bazar in Yakutpura. Pervez immediately alerted the police, who recovered the body . The assailants murdered Ali by stabbing him repeatedly in the chest, Inspector G Ramesh said. Police have nabbed some of the assailants and a case has been registered under section 302 (Murder) of the IPC. TNN

Hyderabad: The AP State Wakf Board (APSWB) on Wednesday took control of properties of Madina Education and Welfare Society (MEWS) headquartered in Nampally on the grounds that they were built on lands endowed to a wakf institution registered in 1947. Addressing a gathering of media persons at Haj House in Nampally , APSWB special officer S M Iqbal said that the MEWS had constructed buildings, which housed schools and colleges, after demolishing structures on lands endowed to Majlis-e-Shoura Dast Parche Bafi Harmain Sharfain (MSDPBHS) in Nampally , Himayatnagar, Hyderguda, Vitthalwadi and Mangalhat. An inquiry committee was formed 10 years ago to look into the alleged malfeasance by K M Arifuddin, who made himself mutawalli (manager) in 1983 and later tenant of MSDPBHS. He formed the society in 1991 and has been collecting donations. All properties have been taken into our direct management. We will work out modalities soon to make sure students of MEWS do not get affected, Iqbal said. He added that Ari-

Madina Education and Welfare Society sealed by the Wakf Board officials at Nampally in the city on Wednesday

fuddin had acted both as tenant and landlord and had concealed the revenue generated by MEWS. It was in 2003 that the inquiry was completed by Hafeez Siddiqui, a special grade deputy collector, and submitted to the board. Meanwhile, in 2012 Syed Farees, a wakf activist filed a PIL in the High Court (HC) seeking action against Arifuddin. Justice C V Nagarjuna Reddy expressed surprise at the fact that the APSWB had failed to take into account the inquiry report despite it being 10 years ago. He had also observed that the HC would exercise the option of summoning APSWB

chief executive officer if wakf standing counsel MAK Mukheed failed to file an affidavit before January 25. The wakf fund, which is seven percent of the revenue generated liable to be paid to the board, was shown as only Rs 11,777 by MEWS when, in fact, the society earns much more. The society has educational institutions and of course earns more than Rs 1.6 lakh per annum, Iqbal said. He added that apart from taking action under suitable sections of the amended Wakf Act, a criminal complaint would be booked against MEWS officials.
