Students returning to the
Eleanor Van Gelder School
(EVG) Sept. 6 will have a new
vice principal and a new roof.
In June the district contracted
for a $455,000 roof restoration
project to fix an old leaky roof and
restore the cupola of the school
building parts of which are
approximately 100 year old. The
project is approximately 95 per-
cent complete and should be fin-
ished before the first day of school,
Superintendent Ted Blumstein
said Monday.
The project went smoothly and
within budget, said Blumstein.
The project was funded from the
$665,000 raised in a district refer-
endum.
Kerstin Maiullo was hired to be
the new vice principal of the
school after Meg Zei resigned for
personal reasons. Zei had been at
the school for three years, said
Blumstein.
Maiullo has experience work-
ing in guidance departments in
other NewJersey schools.
Blumstein said that it was too
early to tell if enrollment would
increase this year. Enrollments
peaked, he said, in September.
You have somewhat of a
mobile population in Edgewater,
said Blumstein.
Some school staffers partici-
pated in a training program at
Rutgers University this summer
about conflict resolution and peer
mediation. A philosophy of stu-
dent management often present in
middle schools and high schools,
children are encouraged to inter-
act productively in order to solve
interpersonal problems.
It helps youngsters resolve dif-
ferences as opposed to adults
always intervening, Blumstein
said
Blumstein said the staff that
attended the workshop would
