Inthisguestpost,NorriKagekiinterviewsMasahiroMori,who,asaprofessorofengineeringatTokyoInstituteof Technologyinthe1970s,proposedthenowfamousconceptoftheuncannyvalley.[Readthefirstauthorized translationofhisseminalarticlehere.]Mori'sinsightwasthatpeoplewouldreactwithrevulsiontohumanlikerobots, whoseappearanceresembled,butdidnotquitereplicate,thatofarealhuman.Hecalledthisphenomenonbukimino tani(theterm"uncannyvalley"firstappearedinthe1978bookRobots:Fact,Fiction,andPrediction,writtenbyJasia Reichardt). Theuncannyvalleyhasbecomemorerelevantinthepastfewyearssince robotsthatactuallylookandmovelikehumansarestartingtobecomeareality. werebeingdeveloped,andtheytriggeredinmethesamekindofsensation.Theseexperienceshadmademestart thinkingaboutrobotsingeneral,whichledmetowritethatessay.Theuncannyvalleywasmyintuition.Itwasoneof myideas.
