What do I know about AAPG, AAPG SC ITB, and the role of geologist in a petroleum industry?

As I read on the internet, American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) is a large professional geological society, especially petroleum geoscientist. AAPG is headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The purpose of AAPG is to boost scientific research, to develop the geosciences, and to encourage high professional conduct.

AAPG isnt only about the science of petroleum geology, but also about the people. Who are they? Mostly, they are geoscientists such as geologists, geophysics, CEOs, students, and academicians. One-third of AAPG members located in outer United States and more than 8.000 members are students.

AAPG has programs, such as certification program, conferences and meetings, education, skills and career focus, grants-in-aid (by AAPG Foundation), insurance program, imperial barrel award, student chapter program, and visiting geoscientist program. For conferences and meetings, AAPG have AAPG Annual Convention &

Exhibition, AAPG International Conference & Exhibition, and many more. AAPG also have distinguished lecture series, education conferences, EMD (Energy Mineral Division) Commodity Committees, Hedberg Research Conferences, field seminars, Geosciences Technical Workshops, and Webinars & Online training from education, skills and career focus program.

One of the AAPG programs that attracts my attention is student chapter program. From what I read from official website of AAPG, the Student Chapter Program of AAPG is consists of groups of geoscience students. It is one of the worlds leading co educational programs in geoscience sectors. Not only provides and facilitates students

with leadership skills development, but also a pillar in developing sense of professionalism. AAPG Student Chapter Program members are students majoring in geoscience at a college of acceptable academic standards.

Im feeling so lucky for being one of the students in Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Institut Teknologi Bandung Student Chapter of AAPG is on the list of AAPG Student Chapters. Simply, ITB Student Chapter of AAPG is ITB students who gather together in the Student Chapter AAPG Organization since January 2000 and forward.

ITB Student Chapter of AAPG is one of five AAPG Student Chapter pioneers in Indonesia. Through exhibition and school visit, ITB Student Chapter of AAPG extended young peoples perspective about petroleum industry in 2011 and 2013. Their projects in 2011 included exhibition workshop, teleconference, guest lecture, and short courses. Even more, in 2012 they held seminar, career development, field trip, and courses. And still counting in 2013, the project included school visit, joint event with another student chapter, psychological training, and more to go.

Why AAPG is all about petroleum geology? What is the role of geologist in petroleum industry? Lets just say, what is the role of petroleum geologist? Petroleum geologist is a scientist who focuses on the combustible resources buried down in the earth. Petroleum geologists concentrate on the extraction and estimation of mostly oil and gas. It is an obligation for petroleum geologist to find the location and amount of useful fuel in reservoirs or sediments, either in land or in ocean. If a petroleum geologist discover a site that probably oil bearing, he can determine where drilling should be placed.

I think this is the main role of petroleum geologists. They are the spearhead in petroleum industry. How can an oil and gas company start to perform and operate their workings if they dont hire petroleum geologist? Where do they drill? Imagine the costs of failed drilling.

Nowadays, the demand of oil and gas is incredibly increasing, and we need more oil and gas resources. Many of them are still undiscovered. Thats why the petroleum geologists are spearheading in petroleum industry.
