King James creates the first charter to the Virginia Company. This allow them to establish settlements in Virginia. The ship of English settlers landed at Cape Henry and the founding of the Jamestown settlement occurred a few short weeks later. Colonists chose Jamestown Island as the site for settlement and began fortifying the area against the Spanish and Native Americans Reverend Robert Hunt held the first Anglican communion in the colonies. The first real church building was built. It was a bark-like structure where Anglicanism was practiced until it burned down in January of 1608. 38 of the original 108 settlers were alive. The Second Virginia Charter was granted by King James I, which took away Royal control of Jamestown and gave it to the joint stock London Company. The position of a new governor, allows the Virginia company to sell stock shares, and gives the company administrative powers over Jamestown. With the food shortage, the English settlers stole food from the local tribes. These were known as raiding parties. Lord de la Warr, also known as Sir Thomas West, is appointed as the governor of Jamestown. First Anglo-Powhatan War. The English settlers attacked the Indians, buring down their homes and crops Governor Thomas West arrives to Jamestown. With him, he brought plenty of food which helped save the town from a period of famine. The governor of Virginia, Sir Thomas Dale, issued the laws of Lawes Divine, Morall and Martiall which specified the responsibilities of ministers and required every person to attend church twice every Sunday. In this winter, notoriously known as the starving time, the population of Virginia declined drastically from about 600 to 90 due to extremely cold weather conditions and exposure, and starvation caused by lack of food and resources. Thomas West leaves Virginia due to illness, and Thomas Dale is appointed as new governor. John Rolfe sent his first shipment of tobacco to England. Governor Thomas Dale and Powhatan tribe comes to an agreement and treat that ends five years of hostile interactions. Dale negotiates peace with another tribe, the Chickahominies. Pocahontas and John Rolfe got married. This signified the peace between the English settlers and the local Indians. Captain Samuel Argall built the church that became the meeting place of the first General Assembly. King George writes the Great Charter. He appoints George Yeardley as the new governor and plans are made to create a General Assembly for the people of Jamestown. George Yeardley officially takes the new position as governor. The first Virginia Assembly met in the Jamestown church and enacted laws that mandated the observance of the Sabbath, weekly church attendance, and the collection of taxes for the support of the church and clergy. This was recognized as the first form of representative government in America. The arrival of the first Africans to the colonies. John Rolfe died. The cause of his death is unknown. Indian Massacre of 1622. The Powhatan planned a surprise attack on the settlers, killing over 350 men and women. Many English settlement and plantation were completely destroyed.
