Kaohsiung MedicalUniversity has the only existing post bachelors medicine department in thenation, and in the last several years it has opened up enrollment to foreignstudents. And because tuition only costs around 10% of what it would in Americaor Europe, it has attracted many American and Japanese student applicantsdetermined to practice medicine. American student Scott St. John said that Kaohsiung Medical Universityscurriculum is intensive and education resources are rich; the tuition, however,is much cheaper than in America. And so St. John, who originally studiedBiochemistry, made a prompt decision to submit his application for enrollment. St. John, a 27 year old, came to Taiwan three yearsago with the intention to teach English and learn Chinese for a year, and thenreturn home. However, last year, as fate would have it, he ended up enrollingin med school. Because the courses are intense, St. John, who doesntunderstand Chinese, must spend twice as much time as others studying. He saidfrankly, for the past three years I havent returned home. St. John explained that every day when I finish myclasses I bury myself in my studies its pretty tough. Fortunately Taiwaneseare very hospitable and classmates are always willing to help him when hedoesnt understand. This has helped him to smoothly get by the bottleneckcreated by language and cultural differences. Koseki Mitsuhiro, a Japanese graduate from Waseda Universitymajored in Medical Anthropology while studying for his bachelors. Hisextracurricular learning also included theory in Chinese Medicine. Four yearsago, when his school and Kaohsiung Medical University became sister schools, hedecided to come to Taiwan to study medicine. Mitsuhiro said that Kaohsiung Medical University has ahospital and College of Medicine, and combines basic theory with clinicalmedicine. Additionally the system where seniors help juniors has allowed him tobenefit a great deal. Both of thesestudents praised the hospitality of Taiwanese and the education environmentvery highly; each of them also was dating a cute Taiwanese girlfriend. Even inlight of medical disputes and declining wages for doctors, they both have stilldecided to stay in Taiwan and practice medicine after graduation. Department Director Mao-Hsiung Huang said thatKaohsiung Medical University opens up 10 seats for foreign students per year. And in addition to the requirement of completing six credits in biology, chemistry or life sciences, due to the fact that in the third year students arerequired to do medical practicums, in order to communicate with patients theymust have acquired basic Chinese language ability. However, the performance offoreign students in recent years has been excellent, and one American 3rdyear student has already passed the national medical practitioners qualifyingexam. These students who have had professional training in university are morecapable of holding up to the pressure when faced with intense curriculum, andtheir performances are not inferior to other students.
