with behaviour like Seeking proximity Distress on separation Joy on reunion General orientation of behaviour towards caregivers (baby looks at mum for approval)

How do babies form attachment? Konrad Lorenz (zoologist) - He studied attachments in animals and called it imprinting. Imprinting is the tendency to attach to the first large moving object normally 13-16 hours after birth. He argued that imprinting had to take place within the critical period. If it didnt happen within 32 hours, it would not happen at all. Imprinting is important for survival of mobile species of animals as mothers move around to forage and escape predators and young remain close to survive. Hence behaviours involving following promote survival of young and evolved via natural selection.
