March 3, 2014 Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema P.O.

Box 25879 Tempe, Arizona 85282 Dear Congresswoman Sinema: As you know, in 1991 Arizona made political history. Congressman Ed Pastor became the first Latino, Mexican-American, to be elected to represent a congressional district in our nations capitol. But he also became a symbol for many other people of color across Arizona. Congressman Pastors election gave truth to the belief that a young girl or boy from San Luis, Arizona to Bisbee, to Globe to Flagstaff and every city and town in Arizona, could in fact, one day, be elected to Congress. The greater political and community impact of Congressman Pastors victory speaks for itself. After Congressman Pastors election, Arizonans elected a second Latino to congress in Congressman Raul Grijalva. And the number of Latina and Latino elected officials from school boards, to city councils and other positions has increased dramatically since Pastors election. Congresswoman, we have watched your political career flourish. You truly are a rising star in Arizona politics and a person for whom there is great admiration. Many of us have supported your campaign through financial contributions and campaign volunteer work. We have shared with you political advice and have voted for you. And there is no doubt that we will continue to do so. However, as your friends, we feel compelled to directly tell you that the recent political rumblings and rumors having you switching congressional seats to run in Congressman Pastors seat, troubles us and the Latino community in general, greatly. Latinos represent 30% of the population in Maricopa County. In some areas within congressional district 7, the percentage of Latinos is much higher. Currently, there are several Latinos and Latinas who have declared themselves candidates to replace Congressman Pastor. The candidates names are immaterial for this dialogue. What is important is that they are Latinas and Latinos. Your candidacy in congressional district 7 will cause major disruptions in the possibility that the Latino community will have a representative from our community in Washington, D.C. We are not oblivious to the fact that you have a sizable financial campaign account, that you have quickly become a leader within Congress and that you serve your constituents well. This speaks highly of your reach and support across Arizona and the nation. And we would like for you to continue your success as a Congresswoman, in your current district. In sum, we ask that you give our request serious consideration as you deliberate your decision. Sincerely, Mario E Diaz, President Mario E Diaz & Associates
