INTERACTIV PUBLIC SPACE PROJECT

The IPS Project is a human scale approach on making an applicable and livable space for everybody and giving to the beautiful seaside city of Vlora a new identity. In every city that is next to the sea, people develop a special relationship with the sea and especially the seaside. The seaside becomes an integral part of everyday life for the habitants of the city and for the visitors as well. The IPS Project touches several aspects of recreation, development and relaxation. What is proposed through this project is a place for everybody, which naturally continues as a limb of the city without overburdening the city. The Interactive Public Space, in the end is seen as a natural merge inside an existing urban pattern and gives a better quality of life to the whole waterfront.

CITY PATTERN
The city pattern map depicts three structural elements of Vlora: green, terrain and urban growth. The city is a mix of linear and radial city, while on its surroundings the landscape is of a prior importance. The impact of all these elemenets is reflected along the waterfront.

IMPACT ALONG THE WATERFRONT

HARBOR CITY
Vlora is an important hub for the region, and a main attraction for tourism. Right now the city is accessed by water for several activities, being businesses or touristic. The main harbor of the city is a stop only for touristic ferries. It has a direct line with Brindisi, Italy, while other local ferries travel to the north and south.

MORPHOLOGY (analysis of the terrain along the waterfront)

This map is a representation of the beginning of the whole concept and development of the project. Here we depict the morphology of the waterfront along several sections. What is evident is the existence of two typologies of the shore from sandy one, to rocky one. Beside that we read as well the presence of green, informal settlements, formal settlements, institutional area, vast open spaces and a variation of landscape. The relationship within all of the information is represented by the percentage of each for a total of 100%.

MORPHOLOGY SPREAD
To develop further the project it was necessary to read according to the whole waterfront the presence of those characteristic sections represented in the morphology map. These two maps give first inputs and hints on specific characteristics of the terrain. Throughout this methodology we conclude that we have several situations within different elements. For the moment it can be mention the water, green, buildings and vast open spaces.

ACCESSIBILITY & its IMPACT with the WATERFRONT

The map of accessibility shows a basic urban pattern of Vloras waterfront. Here is shown the access of primary and secondary roads to the waterfront. The roads collide with the waterfront and create on those spots breaking points, or rather interference with the seaside.

FUNCTIONS (existing situation and proposal)

The functional map represents the coexistence of several functions within one another. Hereby we propose some additional functions, which consist on small-scale buildings lying beneath the walking area, or even a whole new area to develop.

PUBLIC SPACE AND FUNCTIONS (proposal of the waterfront usage)

The diagrammatic map of public space usage represents our proposal on ways to utilize the whole waterfront pedestrian area. As it can be seen on the map, there are integrated areas for watersports, rollers, running paths, walking areas, beach areas etc.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT (waterbus line and bus line)

SODA FOREST_ bus stop

As a very important and basic organizational idea of the whole project, is the proposal of an eco-bus and waterbus. They connect mainly the bus stops and waterbus stops along the waterfront. During the summer season the waterbus is used as well as public transport for the surrounding areas such as Rradhime, Orikum, or beyond.

The concept of the project is based on the correlation of several lines of accessibility. The relationship that those lines create with one another makes several possibilities for public space usages.

NEW POLES

D
The first diagram is a general reading of the existing situation. Here we can read two parallel lines, the seaside and the road. Another characteristic close to Soda forest are the informal settlements. On the other side, along the public beaches we see the formal development, consisting mainly on housing (tall buildings) or hotels. Some basic lines, on which we refer the whole structuring of the project, are the green line, ecobus and running path. The green line starts from the soda forest, and becomes more present inside the new poles. The running path is integrated inside the green line, and follows it along the 5 km. While on the other side the eco-bus line invades the public space, by having a dedicated line that is integrated with the public space.

WATERFRONT

WATERFRONT

In the second diagram we read the leftovers of the latest demolitions. Those leftovers left marks in the public space. We consider them as inputs that correlate with the other layers.

WATERFRONT

In the next diagram we represent the creation of new poles, related to the position of leftovers. Thereafter are created bumps on the ground, which host the main public events.

WATERFRONT

WATERFRONT

In the last map we have all of the lines that interact with one another, as well as the bike line that follows the same movement as the eco-bus line. While on the area where previously were located informal settlements we proposed new development, housing, hotels, and business areas.

Parasol Pine is a tree from the pine family. The tree is native to the Mediterranean region, occurring in Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Levant. The stone pine is a coniferous evergreen tree that can exceed 25 metres in height, but 1220 metres is more typical. In youth, it is a bushy globe, in mid-age an umbrella canopy on a thick trunk, and, in maturity, a broad and flat crown over 8 metres in width. The flexible mid-green leaves are needle-like, in bundles of two, and are 1020 centimetres long . Young trees up to 510 years old bear juvenile leaves, which are very different, single (not paired), 24 centimetres long, glaucous blue-green; the adult leaves appear mixed with juvenile leaves from the fourth or fifth year on, replacing it fully by around the tenth year.
