LITERATURE REVIEW
Introduction
E-wallets are becoming increasingly popular in the Philippines, with over 40 e-wallet
licenses issued thus far. As the country moves toward becoming a cashless society by
2025, mobile-based payments are appearing at almost every retail store, appliance
outlet, supermarket, and even roadside food stalls. It is difficult to go shopping without
seeing at least one e-wallet option advertised when paying for purchases at the cashier.
There is almost no need for actual cash because e-wallets can easily handle almost
everything.
The context of this study demonstrates how E-wallets can effectively assist blue
collar consumers in purchasing sharp appliances as a payment tool through installation
methods to replace traditional payment methods as a new trend among customers.
When using an e-wallet, the blue collar consumer does not need to bring cash or a
credit card. It enables them to obtain items that meet their needs and desires in a more
convenient and efficient manner.
E-Wallet has thus become a practical digital substitute for other payment options
like cash, credit/debit cards, and virtual currencies. The introduction of e-wallets
represents a significant advance in the field of digital payments because they mimic a
traditional wallet by substituting cash for digital currency and real cards for card
information. An e-wallet app simplifies the process of sending money and paying bills,
and it is hailed as the real-time payment system of the future.

The Sharp Group continuously aspires to meet customer needs and demands,
such as dependability, usability, and quality level, by offering goods and services that are
secure, of the highest possible standard, dependable, and environmentally friendly. This
helps to build customer trust and boost customer satisfaction.
E-wallets allow Sharp Corporation to diversify their payment options, grow into
new markets, win over more loyal customers, and enhance sales of their appliances.
People prefer to use e-wallets because they are safer and easier to use. The
pandemic has accelerated their adoption, as digital wallets offer a contactless payment
experience. Previous research conducted by Yap and Ng (2019) claimed that
convenience, confidentiality, and social influence are factors that influence people to
use an e-wallet application.
Hasnain, GMSA, (2019) stated that the Philippines was one of the first countries
to pioneer digital payments in 2001 with the launch of mobile money. This platform
allowed the transfer of funds, the payment of bills, and purchase of goods with the use
of mobile phones and reloadable prepaid cards. But its adoption and use has been
largely limited. In 2013, digital payments accounted for only one percent of the
country’s total transaction volume. By 2018, the volume of digital payments has
increased to 10 percent corresponding to 20 percent share in the total transaction
volume.
Foreign Literature
E-wallet operators have expanded their solutions and services over the years.
Some have provided top-up solutions for prepaid services or utility payments
(Nortajuddin, 2020).
Rakocevic (2019) stated that the new trend for consumers to use an e-wallet
application to replace the traditional payment method. With E-wallet, a user does not
need to bring cash or a credit card along with them. It enables users to make purchases
in a more convenient way. Hence, this research analysis the factors that affect university
students’ intention to use e-wallet.
