Repoit on 0iiginal Cataloging at CBS

Kathaiine Failey

0vei the couise of my 11-week Biiecteu Fieluwoik at the Connecticut
Bistoiical Society I peifoimeu oiiginal cataloging on ovei 7u items. This piocess
involveu fiist ueteimining whethei an item selecteu foi cataloging fiom the backlog
of accessioneu books neeueu copy oi oiiginal cataloging. The piocess woulu begin
as uesciibeu in the Repoit on Copy Cataloging at CBS, anu once it coulu be
ueteimineu that a iecoiu foi the item uiun't exist in 0CLC Connexion the oiiginal
cataloging piocess woulu begin. The oiiginal cataloging piocess is the most time
intensive of all of the cataloging piocesses I completeu uuiing my fieluwoik. The
following example highlights one of the many possible scenaiios that might aiise
uuiing the cataloging piocess.

!"#$%&' )* +,-.-/#& 0#1#&).-/.

1. Aftei ueteimining that a matching iecoiu uiu not exist in 0CLC Connexion, I
woulu cieate a new iecoiu in Connexion by selecting Cieate > New Recoiu >
Book.
2. Fiist I woulu fill in the fixeu fielu coues to match the level of cataloging being
piefoimeu, the language of the item, the publication uate, publication place,
anu whethei the mateiial was illustiateu.
S. 0nce the fixeu fielus weie completeu I woulu save the iecoiu to the local file.
4. Then I woulu begin by assigning a call numbei anu Cuttei numbei to the
item. The piocess follows in the same mannei as uesciibeu in the Repoit on
Copy Cataloging at CBS. The online catalog anu shelf list aie consulteu to
ueteimine what Bewey Becimal call numbeis have been assigneu to items
with a similai subject mattei anu to ensuie that the chosen call numbei anu
Cuttei numbei aie unique.
S. Then I fill in the location coue anu accession numbei in NARC fielu u49.
6. Next I entei the authoiship infoimation into fielu 1uu.
7. Aftei which I will entei the title statement with the statement of
iesponsibility in subfielu c. Foi example:
24S 1 4 $a The histoiy of Tiumbull, Connecticut: $b a histoiy in
photogiaphs $c euiteu by C. B. Auams, }i.
8. Then I locate anu entei the publication infoimation in fielu 26u. If the
location of publication is not listeu then s.l. is useu. If the publishei is not
inuicateu in the item than s.n. is useu. An example of the 26u fielu:
26u ## $a s.l. $b S. Chase & sons, piinteis $c 1896.
9. Next I uesciibe the item physically in the Suu fielu. The height of the item in
centimeteis is measuieu, the numbei of pages anu any illustiative mattei.
Foi example:
Suu ## $a 89 p. $b ill., maps, $c 26 cm.
1u. Aftei which I ueteimine the appiopiiate subject heauings to uesciibe the
aboutness of the item. 0sing the Authoiities file on the Libiaiy of Congiess
website, I seaich foi teims in oiuei to locate the official Libiaiy of Congiess
Subject Beauings that match the subject of the item.
11. Finally, I auu any auuitional notes about the item owneu by CBS. Foi
example, shoulu the copy contain a hanuwiitten insciiption I woulu incluue a
note in the Suu fielu, as uesciibeu in fuithei uetail in the Repoit on Copy
Cataloging at CBS.
12. Aftei the iecoiu is complete, I will caiefully scan foi typos oi eiiois befoie
selecting the valiuate button, which valiuates the NARC couing anu selecting
Piouuce anu 0puate Boluings to cieate a shelf list caiu anu upuate CBS's
holuings in 0CLC Connexion.
