Character list

Artyom:

Artyom, born a few years before the bombing in 2009, was raised underground in Timiryazevskaya station until it was overrun by a massive horde of rats. Since then, he lives with his adoptive father Alex in VDNKh (Exhibition). When he was younger, Artyom and some of his teen friends opened the hermetic door of a station north of VDNKh named Botanicheskiy sad. Through this door the Dark ones got inside a few years later, and because of the events taking place at this time, he would be branded as their "chosen one" to help the two species reunite. Many years later when Hunter is investigating the dark ones and their potential threat to VDNKh Station and the rest of the metro system, he gives Artyom the responsibility of traveling to the center of the Metro to warn the rest of the metro of the danger. Alex is responsible for saving Artyom during the nuclear war, as stated in the book; "I was just a boy when they saved me". His mother hands him over to Sukhoi while their homestation is being attacked by a horde of rats. Sukhoi and some others manage to escape via railcar, but everyone still in the station was killed. Despite this, Artyom does not refer to Alex/Sukhoi as father but as uncle. Hunter is a ranger and old friend of Alex, possibly due to a pre-war friendship. As a ranger he is a high-ranking one, being trusted enough to traverse the surface alone with heavy gear, and is a key part of the story, entrusting Artyom with a mission to save the Metro. Khan Aitmatov is a wandering soldier, philosopher, and an occasional member of the Rangers. Rangers is a special unit of the very best soldiers in the metro. Bourbon is a trader, drifter, survivor, criminal, and adventurer, all rolled into one man. He is a seasoned professional who has seen everything the metro and surface has to offer, and lived to tell the tale. Ulman (alternative spelling Uhlman, Ul'man, rus. ) is a frequently wisecracking member of the rangers with a heart of gold. He helps Artyom repeatedly throughout his journey.
