1. Cambridge Primary and Cambridge Secondary 1

We have announced some important revisions for those schools who teach the programmes and offer assessments for Cambridge International Primary Programme, the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme and Cambridge Checkpoint. The programmes now have new names Cambridge Primary and Cambridge Secondary 1. Additionally, in 2012, we are introducing a new assessment called Cambridge Primary Checkpoint. This will be taken at the end of the Cambridge Primary Stage (in the same way that the existing Cambridge Checkpoint is taken at the end of the Cambridge Secondary 1 stage). Key features are: There are revised curriculum frameworks for English, Maths and Science and a new curriculum for English as a second language. Additionally, the science curriculum framework has been extended to cover stages 1 and 2. The revised frameworks are available on www.cie.org.uk/cambridgeprimary and www.cie.org.uk/cambridgesecondary1 There is a new assessment at the end of Cambridge Primary Cambridge Primary Checkpoint. This offers comprehensive feedback and guidance on learners strengths and weaknesses in the key curriculum areas. Specimen papers for the 2012 assessments for both the new Cambridge Primary Checkpoint and Cambridge Checkpoint are available on the website.
2011 will be the last year for the Cambridge Primary Achievement tests which are taken at the end of the Primary stage. From 2012, learners will be able to take Cambridge Primary Checkpoint. As this is marked in Cambridge, there will no longer be the need for teachers to undertake the previous accreditation requirements. For schools registered for these programmes, the support websites contain documents giving the key changes that we have made to each of the curriculum frameworks. The Progression Tests for each stage are being revised to align with the new curriculum frameworks. These new tests will be published in September 2011. Teachers using the existing curriculum should continue to use the existing Progression Tests. From September 2011 there will be Progression Tests for stages 3-9 inclusive. For the 2012 tests, the Cambridge Checkpoint curriculum has been incorporated into the Cambridge Secondary 1 curriculum frameworks. Therefore if you are preparing learners for the Cambridge Checkpoint Tests in 2012, the revised curriculum frameworks should be used. 2. Provision of separate answer booklets

Answer booklets are booklets of A4 lined paper for candidates to write their answers in and where provided must be used for the question papers listed below. They are pre-printed with the question paper details on the front cover and are supplied with the question paper. We are only supplying answer booklets with the question papers listed in these tables. You will need to supply the stationery for all other question papers. The answer booklets should not be used for any question paper or for any exam series other than the ones printed on the front cover of the booklet. 3. Changes to the availability of Cambridge O Levels

For Centres in Administrative Zones 3, 4 or 5, there is no change to the availability of Cambridge O Levels. However, from the June 2012 examination session onwards, Centres in Administrative Zones 1, 2 or 6 should contact our Customer Services if they wish to enter candidates for Cambridge O Level examinations.

Cambridge IGCSE India Studies, Syllabus 0447 From June 2011 The Cambridge IGCSE India Studies (0447) syllabus will be piloted in the June 2011 and June 2012 examinations. Cambridge IGCSE India Studies offers the opportunity to understand emerging India and the achievements, challenges and opportunities facing the nation that is the worlds largest democracy and will be one of the great powers of the 21st Century. This course will thus interest anyone anywhere wanting to understand the contemporary world. Cambridge IGCSE India Studies builds on existing good practice in international education and current thinking in area studies to provide a lively and innovative transdisciplinary course that opens minds to the complexity of the world and the diversity of human experience. Signicant features of the syllabus include transdisciplinary study; a compulsory core combined with pupil choice that enables candidates to develop their own interests; an enquiry-based approach to learning that is focused on developing modes of analytical thinking; a research portfolio that teaches students how to plan and undertake a research project and then to reect critically on their work.
This syllabus draws from a number of disciplines and requires teachers and students to look at issues and themes from a variety of perspectives (economics, environmental management, geography, contemporary history, political science, social studies). Cambridge IGCSE India Studies promotes the development of those skills and ways of thinking that active citizens of the future will need. The course will develop the general ability of students to plan and to solve problems, to understand different perspectives, to evaluate information critically and to think independently - all transferable skills which will provide a rm foundation for more advanced study in school and higher education, to say nothing of their value as preparation for future employment in a wide range of occupations and professions. Cambridge International AS Level and A Level Business Studies, Syllabus 9707 From June 2011 There are signicant changes to the Curriculum Content. New content has been added to reect current business theory and practice. Some of the old content has been removed. Some content has been moved from Cambridge International AS to Cambridge International A Level, or vice-versa. The layout of the Curriculum Content has been revised so that the syllabus is more accessible for teachers. For the Cambridge International A Level, there is a completely new section on Strategic Management. An Appendix has been added to show the new international accounting terminology and the equivalent terms used previously by Cambridge. Refer to the syllabus for details. There are no changes to the Scheme of Assessment. A new edition of the Stimpson textbook, covering the whole of the Cambridge International AS and A Level syllabus, is now available, and is published by Cambridge University Press.

There will be three papers: Paper 1 is a theoretical paper lasting 2.5 hours consisting of short-answer and structured questions with no choice. Paper 2 is coursework (school-based assessment) and will consist of a single piece of work of a complex nature, involving the use of a computer to solve a specic problem. Paper 3 is an alternative to the coursework paper lasting 1.5 hours and consisting of short-answer and structured questions with no choice. Questions will refer to a given scenario. Candidates take Paper 1 and either Paper 2 or Paper 3. The syllabus and specimen papers are available on our website at www.cie.org.uk. Cambridge IGCSE Information Communication Technology (ICT), Syllabus 0417 From June 2011 Cambridge is changing the way the ICT Practical Exams are being administered. This is needed because of the increased ease of electronic communications between individuals and organisations. The signicant changes are: the reduction of the exam window for Paper 2 and Paper 3 practical exams to one week for each component the introduction of an early and late sitting for Paper 2 and Paper 3 for the June series early sittings for Papers 2 and 3 are referred to as 21 and 31 respectively late sittings for Papers 2 and 3 are referred to as 22 and 32 respectively Centres may choose which sitting they prefer for both papers the question papers will be despatched as hard copy (paper), and will not be available electronically as in the past Supervisors are not required to submit the worked copy

Cambridge International AS Level and A Level Computing, Syllabus 9691 From June 2011 1) changes to the scheme of assessment The Practical Programming Project will be replaced with a written examination paper (Paper 2) lasting 2 hours (worth 75 marks). The examination will be based on Practical Programming Techniques. Paper 4 remains as a project but contains more computing and consequently the programming exercise is in this paper. Paper 1 is reduced to 1 hour 30 minutes and 75 marks (to reflect the additional examination time resulting from changes to Paper 2). 2) changes to the syllabus content There is a new Section 2 on Practical Programming Techniques which reflects the change in the scheme of assessment. Some topic areas have been removed because they fit more appropriately into an ICT syllabus allowing a greater emphasis on Computing. There has been some re-ordering of content to reflect changes to Paper 2. Content has been updated to reflect changes in the subject. For all written papers the candidates will be answering on the question paper. For Paper 1 and Paper 3 no calculators are allowed.

The substance of the syllabus is unchanged. From June 2012 General Changes Minor changes have been made to the division between Core (Cambridge International AS Level and A Level) and Supplement (Cambridge International A Level only) to make the division between the two more coherent. Cambridge IGCSE Literature (English) Syllabus 0476 From June 2011 This syllabus (based on Option A of Cambridge IGCSE syllabus 0486) requires all candidates taking it to write on Shakespeare for Paper 1, and to take an Unseen component. It has been accredited by the regulator, Ofqual, for use in state maintained schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. From June 2011 There is a slight adjustment to the component weightings of the Open Books Options as follows: Paper 1 (set texts) 75% + Paper 2 (coursework): 25% Paper 1 (set texts) 75% + Paper 3 (unseen): 25% Set texts papers (Paper 1, Paper 4, Paper 5) Teachers should consult the relevant syllabus booklet for details of set texts. Paper 1 (Set texts open book) Candidates may no longer attempt more than one empathic question on the paper. (They are not required to answer an empathic question.) Their three answers must include at least one passage-based task and at least one essay task. The former will be indicated by an asterisk symbol (as in previous sessions), and the latter will be indicated by a dagger symbol placed against the question number. This information will also be provided on the Contents page at the beginning of the paper. (There will be one asterisk and two dagger questions on each poetry set text.) The relevant rubric on the front of the question paper will now read: Answer at least one passage-based question (marked *) and at least one essay question (marked ). Paper 2 Coursework portfolio Teachers are reminded that some adjustments to the marking criteria will come into effect, with each assignment marked out of 25 (to give a total component mark out of 50). The revised marking criteria are printed in an appendix to the syllabus booklet. (The revised Coursework Training Handbook, available from CIE publications, gives further guidance on the application of the criteria.) The syllabus for 2011 states, as a guide, a word length of between 600-1000 words for each assignment.

Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English, Syllabus 0486 Paper 3 (Unseen) The duration of this paper is 1 hour 15 minutes. Paper 4 (Set texts closed book) Candidates may no longer attempt more than one empathic question on the paper. (They are not required to answer an empathic question.) Their three answers must include at least one passage-based task and at least one essay task. The former will be indicated by an asterisk symbol (as in previous sessions), and the latter will be indicated by a dagger symbol placed against the question number. This information will also be provided on the Contents page at the beginning of the paper.(There will be one asterisk and two dagger questions on each poetry set text.) The relevant rubric on the front of the question paper will now read: Answer at least one passage-based question (marked *) and at least one essay question (marked ). From June 2012 In addition to the changes coming into effect in 2011 as above. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English, Syllabus 0500 From June 2011 The format of the Question Paper for Paper 1 Reading Passage (Core) is different. Candidates will answer on the Question Paper. The Question Paper will consist of the questions followed by a designated response space. The Question Paper will contain a separate Reading Booklet Insert. This will consist of the Reading Passage to be used to answer Question 1. A sample paper will be available on the CIE website from March 2011.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language, Syllabus 0511 From June 2011 An alternative version of 0510 Syllabus, English as a Second language, will become available for rst examination in June 2011. The 0511 Syllabus, English as a Second Language, will include an oral component which contributes 15% to the overall grade. The weighting of the other components will be: Reading and Writing 70%, Listening 15%. For further information refer to the 0511 English as a Second Language 2011 syllabus. 0510 English as a Second Language will continue to be available worldwide. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English, Syllabus 0522 From June 2011 This syllabus (based on Cambridge IGCSE syllabus 0500) has compulsory Speaking and Listening which contributes to the overall grade candidates receive for the written components. This syllabus has been accredited by the regulator, Ofqual, for use in state maintained schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. From June 2011 The syllabus has been revised from the June 2011 examination. It has been modernised but will retain key features in order to facilitate the transition. For example, there will be changes to the number of marks, weightings of tasks, order of tasks and marking criteria for Paper 1. Paper 2 now has two reading passages, one factual, on which the summary and other main ideas questions will be based, and one narrative, on which the detailed comprehension questions will be based. There will be fewer marks available for the language of the summary. Candidates will answer on the question paper for Paper 2. Candidates will be credited for either spelling in their answers. Cambridge IGCSE Geography, Syllabus 0460 From June 2011 The syllabus has been slightly revised, for rst examination in June 2011. Syllabus content remains largely unchanged but there are alterations affecting Paper 3, the coursework option. Candidates have to produce one piece of coursework, with a limit of 2000 words. From June 2011 The syllabus has had a major revision and both the structure of the assessment and the syllabus content have changed, for rst examination in June 2011. Paper 1 Themes: is one hour 45 minutes long and candidates answer three structured questions. Paper 2 Skills: is one hour 30 minutes long and candidates answer a Survey mapwork question and four other questions, primarily testing a variety of geographical skills. Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives, Syllabus 0457 From June 2012 Following the review of the pilot syllabus incorporating valuable feedback from schools, teachers, examiners and moderators, we have published a revised syllabus for examination in June and November 2012. This replaces the previously published syllabus for these dates. We have made a number of changes to clarify the language and the assessment procedure. The aims of the syllabus remain the same: learners study a range of global issues from a variety of perspectives personal, local/national and global. The assessment continues to be based on skills rather than content, with learners developing and applying a range of skills. the syllabus aims and assessment objectives have been reviewed and clarified the list of topics has been increased and some have been broadened two components have new names: Individual Research (instead of Portfolio) and Group Project (instead of Project) for the Individual Research component, two reports are submitted the weighting of each component has been revised
The new topics have exemplar questions that teachers may wish to use as an initial focus for investigation. Revised mark schemes are in the syllabus, together with guidance on the role of the teacher. A revised Specimen Paper is available on our website at www.cie.org.uk. Revised Teaching Guides and other support materials are available from March 2011. Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives, Syllabus 8987 From June 2012 Following the successful pilot of both Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives and Cambridge Pre-U Global Perspectives and Independent Research, we are now developing a new qualication: Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives. From 2011 The sampling arrangements for Paper 3 Speaking have been revised as follows (please see relevant syllabuses): In order to allow us to check accurately the standard of assessment, each teacher/ examiner must record and send us a sample from each Centre at which he or she examines: Centres entering 116 candidates must send the recordings of all candidates. Centres entering 17 or more candidates must send: i) the recordings of the rst 10 candidates according to candidate number and ii) the recordings of 6 candidates across the ability range, e.g. 2 good, 2 middling, 2 weak. The candidates selected should be representative of the range of marks awarded by the Centre and should be spread as evenly as possible across that range. If possible, the recordings of the strongest and the weakest candidates at the Centre should be included, with the other recordings spaced at equal intervals in between.
NB Centres entering 17 or more candidates must send a total of 16 recordings: the category (ii) candidates must be chosen from candidates who do not fall into category (i). In Centres with just over 17 candidates, we accept this may mean that the category (ii) candidates are not fully representative of the range. In addition, from 2011, the Centre is responsible for supplying standard format cassettes/CDs for the recording of its moderation sample: these will not be supplied by Cambridge. Mini cassettes/mini CDs must not be used.

In the May/June 2011 session only, the period in which Centres may conduct and assess their Speaking tests has been extended to 9 May for syllabuses 0520 French, 0525 German and 0530 Spanish. Cambridge IGCSE Spanish Literature, Syllabus 0488 From June 2011 Please note the following changes to the syllabus which come into effect from May/June 2011: Paper 2 From 2011 candidates are permitted to produce one coursework assignment on a text prepared for Paper 1. Previously, candidates folders were not permitted to include work on texts prepared for Paper 1. The syllabus has therefore been amended as follows: 4.2 Paper 2: Coursework portfolio Students will submit a portfolio, containing three assignments, each of about 600800 words, and showing evidence of wider reading in all three categories: Poetry, Prose and Drama. Each assignment must be on a literary text and may be either an essay or an empathic response piece. One assignment can be on a text prepared for the Paper 1 examination. Paper 3 In May/June 2011 the duration of this paper will become 1 hour 20 minutes. Cambridge O Level German, Syllabus 3025 Cambridge O Level Spanish, Syllabus 3035 Cambridge International A Level Chinese, Syllabus 9715 From November 2011 In November 2011 and thereafter, the optional oral examination (component 3) will no longer be available. Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education, Syllabus 0413 From June 2012 Teachers should ensure that they use the correct version of the Coursework Guidance Booklet. There is a further update (Coursework guidelines 2010) for examination from 2010 which includes revisions to the criteria for the Analysing and Improving Task. This can be found on our website www.cie.org.uk. Candidates should continue to be assessed on their performances in four practical activities, which meet the rubric requirements of the coursework. Candidates only need to be assessed in one Analysing and Improvising Task but which must be on one of their four practical activities. Centres must submit for external moderation, video evidence of a sample of candidates in each practical activity except Swimming, Athletics, Hill Walking and Campcraft. For Athletics and Swimming, Centres must provide the recorded times/ distances which must be independently veried with a signature, name, position and dates. For Hill Walking and Campcraft, evidence in the form of route sheets, route tracings, equipment, menu lists and expedition logs must be submitted for external moderation. You should ensure that you check your DVD video evidence before it is submitted to CIE for external moderation. The video evidence should be recorded on a normal sized DVD (no mini DVDs), on single layered DVD which can be viewed either on Windows Media Player or Quicktime. Video evidence that cannot be viewed by the external moderator will be returned to the Centre and you will be requested to provide replacements. This may result in delays in grading of these candidates.
