itforweeks.
ltwasaquarteraftersixwhenhejumpedintotheshower,
shampooedhishairandlettheconditionersitforanextraminutejust
tomakesureitworked.Onasmallrackintheshowerwasan
assortmentofbodywashesthatheandhisgirlfriendCarolyn--Carrie-
-used.Havingusedherbodywashinsteadofhisown,Briannow
smelledlikefreshpickedstrawberries.
WhenBrianfirstbegandatingCarolyn,hetookspecialcare
whenpreparingtoseeher,inturncausinghimtobeconsistentlylate
fortheirdates.Now,thatwasn'tthecase.Theyhadbeenliving
togetherforthepasttwoyears.Andtonight,hewouldbeabletotake
histimegettingready.Carolynwouldn'tbecominghomebefore
seeinghimthisevening.
Sheonceaskedhimwhathissecretmethodforsmellinggood
was.Hewouldnevertellher,neversayheusedherbodywash
insteadofhisown.Sometimes,shewouldevenhangaroundoutside
thebathroomafterheshowered,peekinginthroughacrackinthe

bathroomdoor,justtogetaglimpseofanythingthatmighthintat
whatmadehimsmellsogood.Everytimeshetrieditshewas
caught.Hewouldcomeoutofthebathroomwearingonlyatoweland
scoopherupinhisarmsandcarryhertothebed,wheretheywould
spendmostoftheirevening.
Therecipeforhissmellingsogoodwassimple.Threedabsof
OceanPerfectacrosstheneck,onedabofEvergreenjustunderthe
chinandadabofBerry-blueoneachwrist.WhenCarolynfirstasked
himwhatkindofcolognehewaswearinghewouldalwaysreplyby
sayingthatitwasFreshWaterFruit,anamehehadgivenhisprivate
mixture.ltwasn'tuntillaterthatshelearnedthatsuchacologne
didn'texist.Heeventuallyhadtoletherinonhissecret.ltwaseither
thatorspendthenightaloneonthecouchinthelivingroom.Butshe
neverknewthatitwasalsothescentofherbodywashmixedinwith
thecolognethatmadethesmellextraunique.
Now,aloneinthebathroomthatranoffthemasterbedroom,
Brianappliedhiscologne-mixcarefully,brushedonhisunderarm
deodorant,andlookedathimselfinthemirror.Stunning.Redhair,
blueeyes,therightamountofcolorinhischeeks.Perfect.
Hewentoutintothebedroomandovertothecloset.Apicture
ofCarolynsatatopthemahoganydresserbesideit.Heturnedtoit.
"Whatdoyouthink,Hon?"heasked."Lightbluewithablack
shirt,orsomethinggraywithblack?Yourchoice,ofcourse."
Carolyn'spicturegavehimaconsideringlook.Herblondehair
hunglooselyoverhershoulders,herblueeyestellinghimthatshe
lovedhim.

Feelingthatshewouldchoosethegraywithblack,hepicked
thesuitoutoftheclosetandlaiditonthebed.Ablackleatherbelt
withabrassbucklewasselected,aswellasanoff-whitetie.Heknew
thatthetiewouldbeatadflashybut,afterall,beingoriginalwaswhat
Brianwasallabout.
Hedressedwithhisbacktothepicture,notwantinghertosee
himuntilhewascompletelyready.Ashepulleduphispantshe
madeawrysmile,anddiscoveredhemusthaveputonanextra
poundortwosincethelasttimeheworethem.Thebuttononthe
waistlinetookafewmomentstofastenintoplacebeforehisbody
settledintothem.Thesewerethepantshereservedforspecial
occasions,nothisworkpants.Thepairhenowworeusedtobelong
tohisfatherbeforehedied.
Steppingovertothemirrorthathungabovethedresser,he
openedthetopdrawerandpulledoutablackcomb.
Hepartedhiswethairandfrowned--likehealwaysdid--when
theteethofthecombranoverthebaldspotthatwasformingatthe
topofhishead.Hesetthecombdownandpressedhishairalongthe
sidesofhisheadwithhispalms.Hishairwasperfect,notastrand
outofplace.
Thetiewasnext.WhenhegothisjobatMaxwellandDavis,an
accountingfirmattheotherendoftown,Carolynwouldhavetoget
upinthemorningwithhimtohelphimtieit.Finally,onemorning,she
madehimsitontheedgeofthebed,hersittingbehindhim,and
instructedhimstepbysteponhowtodoitproperly.Andnow,for
Brian,tyingatiewasaseasyastyingyourshoe.

Bendingdowntothebottomdrawer,hepulledoutapairof
blacksocks.Unfortunately,likeallhissocks,thispairhadaholenear
thebigtoe.HefiguredCarolynwouldletitslide.Shewouldknowthat
hisheartwasintherightplace.
Afterthesockscameapairofblackslip-ondressshoes.He
battedthetoesofthemwiththeendofhistietoremovethelittlebitof
dustthathadformedtherewhilesittinginthebedroomclosetover
night.
Briandonnedthesuitjacket.
"Almostthere,"hesaidtohimself.
Returningtothemirror,hestraightenedhisclothesandpicked
upthepictureofCarolyntogetheropinion.
"Whatdoyouthink,Carrie?"heaskedthepicture.
Carolyn'simagedidn'trespondbutjudgingbythewayshewas
smilinginit,Brianthoughtshedecidedhelookedspiffyenoughfor
theevening.
Briansetthepicturedownandopenedupthejewellerybox
nexttoit.Beforetakinghisshowerhewouldsethisgoldwatchand
highschoolringinthere.Eversincelosinganecklacewhile
swimminginLakeWinnipegasaboyonesummer,goingnearwater
withanyformofjewelleryhadalwaysbeenabadidea.
Heputonhiswatchandringandsmiled.
She'sgoingtolikethis,hetoldhimself.
BeneathCarolyn'spillowonhersideofthebed,Brianhad
hiddenalovenoteforher.Hetookoutthetinyenvelopefrom
beneaththepillow,openedit,andreadtheletteraloudtohimself.

withyouforever.l'velovedyousincealways,andtonightl'mgoingto

Hesmiledagain,thebeatofhisheartquickening.Theclock
abovethebedsaid6:45.Hefiguredhehadafewminutesbefore
seeingher.
Hewentovertohissideofthebedandsatonitsedgeand
proppeduphispillows.Helieddownandsetthelovenoteneatlyon
hischest.Theclockread6:46.
Afewmoreminutes,hethought.
Whentheclockreadexactly6:50,Brianopenedupthenight
tabledrawernexttothebedandpulledoutablue,velvetcase.Time
togetmoving.Hedidn'twanttobetoolatethisevening.
Thelidcreakedwhenheopenedit.lnsidewassomething
smooth,cylindricalandshiny.Hetooktheobjectoutandhelditinhis
hands.Afterfeelingitcarefullyhesetitonthemattressnexttohim,
gotupfromthebed,pickedupCarolyn'spictureandkissedit.He
envisionedherkissinghimback.
Bringingthepicturewithhim,Brianreturnedtothebed,lied
downagainandreplacedthelovenoteonhischest.Hepickedupthe
objectandstudieditonemoretime.Hehadboughtitearlierthatday.
Fortheonehundredandfifty-ninedollarandsixty-fivecentpricetag,
hehopeditworked,hopeditwouldensureheandhissweetiewould
betogetherforever.
Carolynwouldagreelgotagooddeal,hethought.lcan'twait

herblueeyes.
