Lesson Plan Unit 5, Day 3 HEADING Karen Guarino Geometry 65 Minutes Introduction to Ratios, Proportions, and Similarity OVERVIEW/

RATIONALE The purpose of this lesson, the 3rd one in this unit, is to review triangle similarity and introduce the methods of indirect measurement that utilize similarity. These concepts and theorems are important components of geometry, and by exploring these ideas, my hope is that students will come to a deeper understanding of their value and where they come from. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

When do we see similar triangles in real life? Why are they important and valuable to explore?
GOALS/OBJECTIVES Students will be able to set up and solve similar triangle application problems. Students will be able to perform the stick, mirror, and shadow methods. STANDARDS

46 Determine whether triangles are similar using triangle similarity shortcut 48 Solve application similarity problems with indirect measurements methods
Practices: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Attend to precision. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MATERIALS PowerPoint presentation, meter stick, mirror PROCEDURES BODY OF THE LESSON Students will first complete a warm-up on triangle similarity: 15 minutes Review warm-up: 5 minutes Teacher will demonstrate to students the various methods we use for indirect measurements. She will involve the students in the demonstrations, drawing diagrams, having physical objects, and demonstrating the ways in which we use all three methods: After each method is introduced, students will be asked to practice this method on their own: 40 minutes

CLOSURE Students will be given their homework assignment via canvas Final thoughts: When do we see these methods in the real world? Why might these methods for indirect measurements be useful ? : 5 minutes ACCOMODATIONS Students who need extra assistance will be helped by SATs. Students may use calculators if needed (since doing the calculations by hand doesnt add to the purpose of the lesson). Students who prefer to work alone may do so. Other accommodations will be provided as needed. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION (MAY HAPPEN IN BODY/ PROCEDURES) Students will be assessed formally on their ability to complete the warm-up and methods problems. They will be assessed informally through conversations, questioning, participation in whole-class discussion, and attention to all steps being taken, and general monitoring throughout the process.
