Mastering communication is an essential skill to have in every aspect of everyday life for both professional and personal reasons. Effective communication is the key element that drives companies to the exceptional heights that some have achieved, and that others are bound to achieve. A mastery of communication is also the key to having successful personal relationships. To work well with others, coherent exchanges of ideas are essential in the business world. If coworkers cannot communicate well with each other, tasks will not be completed; people will be fighting and the work will wander aimlessly. To work towards one common goal, everyone must be able to articulate his or her thoughts and ideas. Members of a work group or team in the workplace need to have good communication skills to collaborate effectively and to complete a task efficiently. Members of the management team in a company must be able to convey the tasks to be completed clearly to the workers; allowing the workers to know exactly what must be accomplished. Knowing how to communicate effectively is the key to getting along and not annoying others in any interaction, personal or professional. When in a working environment, everyone must be able to properly articulate thoughts and feelings as to not come across as condescending or abrasive. When in personal settings, communications must be well thoughtout, clear and concise to prevent misinterpretation of a thought or purpose. Another reason to possess effective communication skills is to convey ideas clearly. When someone can convey ideas clearly, it is easier to gain useful input back for refining an idea. When developing ideas, everyone must be able to coherently share an idea and gain constructive feedback as part of the development process. With out proper communication skills, people would not be able to understand the feedback they received, or be able to use it in an effective fashion. To share ideas and give feedback of others ideas requires a good handle on how to articulate a thought. When a coworker or peer asks for input on an idea, one must be able to give that input in a coherent fashion so that it is usable. If one does not have a mastery of effective communication, then one would not be able to understand a conversation on a level that would be meaningful. Good written communication skills are essential when writing effective resumes or cover letters. Having excellent verbal communication skills are needed to complete an interview successfully. Today's job market is extremely competitive, if a job seeker does not have effective communication skills, they will be passed up for a candidate who does. A mastery of both verbal and written communications can assure one of getting a better job. When interviewing for a better position in a professional field written communication skills are necessary. A well-written cover letter and resume are the main points employers look for in candidates. Communication skills are what get a prospective employee an interview. Once one gains an interview, the prospective job candidate must be able to articulate their skills and abilities to the interviewer. Employers want candidates who not only possess the skills required for a job, but also employers want candidates who can effectively express their ideas, thoughts and goals. Some companies pre-screen possible candidates online, by either synchronous or asynchronous communication. Especially in the technology fields, employers are looking for and hiring candidates who possess positive communication skills.

The online environment is another place where effective communication is the key to success. In writing, the reader has only the written word to go by. Keys to the topic, tone and setting are not present in the written medium, the reader only has the words on the page to discern what the author is intending to convey. When writing a persuasive essay, a product review or a news article the author must use a craft of sorts to weave an entertaining and educational work together. Itis easy to see why a mastery of communication in any form is an essential skill to possess for the success of anyone's daily life. For any goal that someone has set for himself or herself, communication is not only required, but also extremely beneficial. Whether it is in the corporate world or in one's personal relationships, saying the wrong thing, whether or not the timing is right, can irrevocably damage someone's world. Some might even say that effective communication is the secret to life. Published by Steve Palacios As a technology student, I am always finding interesting things. View profile
