An individuals identity is shaped by how they think about themselves, how others see them, and how society influences these perspectives.

Essential Questions:
Is identity permanent or malleable? What responsibilities does an individual have in a community or society? How does society influence an individuals identity?

Objectives:
Students will be able to: Examine figurative language and word choice to analyze character development Recognize how a characters speech, actions, and thoughts contribute to the themes in a text Identify themes and motifs in a text

Materials: Invisible Man texts, copies of study questions Procedures: Tuesday March 11 Warm Up: With a partner, students will share themes and motif/symbol patterns from homework , then share out with class Review main themes/patterns from novel so far Themes: Identity is shaped by how a person sees themselves and how others see them A persons image is not always reflective of their identity (what you see on the outside is not always the same as what is on the inside) Individuality vs. conformity Patterns Blindness Speeches Chaos vs. order Identity being shaped by someone else Music linked with other sensory experiences Group Work: Students will spend period working with classmates to answer study questions about characters, series of events, themes, symbols, historical connections for chapters 1-15 Map out IMs journey throughout the novel. Identify the different settings he has been in, the major moments in his life, how his identity has transformed, and how he has come to work for the Brotherhood. How have various external factors influenced IMs identity development? Consider how family, jobs, education, and the social values of those around him have played a part in how IM sees himself.

By the end of chapter 15, has IM started to form his own, individual identity or is he still being influenced by others? Teacher will walk around to check in with groups and answer questions Class will periodically come together to review answers to questions Homework: Study for test

Wednesday March 12 Test Chapter 1-15 Homework: Read chapter 16 Assessment: Participation in discussion, notes from reading homework, collaboration with classmates, answering of textbased questions Standards:
