For the past 24 years, the

firefighters union, IAFF

Local 1744, has brought
the joy of an Easter egg
hunt to children.
We love doing it, said
St. Clair Shores firefighter
and event organizer Scott
Campbell. Its just so
great to see the smiles on
the faces and the fun that
the kids have every year.
This years event takes
place beginning at noon
Sunday, April 20, at
Blossom Heath Park, lo-
cated along the citys
Nautical Mile.
I would suggest people
get there early, between
11 a.m. and 12 p.m. is ide-
al, Campbell said.
Because we start right at
noon, and it takes about
two minutes for all those
eggs to be gone.
About 1,500 eggs are
filled with candy then scat-
tered in Blossom Heath
Park.
We break it up into
three distinct sections,
Campbell said. We have a
0-3 years old, 3-7 years old,
and then 7-years old and
up section. This way all the
kids have a chance.
Campbell said the hunt
is far from that, given the
eggs are simply scattered
throughout the area in
plain sight of the chil-
dren.
Along with the eggs,
Campbell said each child
will receive a ticket that
makes them eligible for
one of dozens of Easter
baskets.
Were going to raffle off
at least 40 of them,
Campbell said.
These baskets are made
up by union members and
every item in each is pur-
chased by the union, he
said.
We use to go out and
buy them commercially,
Campbell said. But now,
we go out and buy the stuff
and come back and make
them ourselves. We get a
group of us together, may-
be five or six of us, then we
go out and buy everything
and then build about 40
baskets.
The event is a firefight-
ers union one, but the co-
operation of the city and
the entire community is
essential.
We have a lot of partici-
pation from the city, partic-
ularly the Parks and
Recreation Department,
Campbell said. They real-
ly help us out with the
sound stage and setup.
Theyre volunteering their
time for this too. We really
appreciate it.
Campbell also pointed
out that Cynthia Pajckic
and the girls at Magic
Touch Salon and Spa go
above and beyond in help-
ing to stuff each egg with
candy.
We couldnt do it with-
out their help, he said.

A marker rests near the front entrance of the soon-to-be-open 40th District Court
building. The marker makes note of the constriction and dedication of the original
structure in 1934 and the new facility built in 2014.
A tentative date has been set for the
opening of the newly constructed 40th
District Court, Mayor Kip Walby said.
April 23 is the plan to have the court-
house open, Walby said. Theres a lot
of things going on in there right now, like
tile work and things like that, but it looks
like April 23 is the day.
The opening is the culmination of a
project decades in the making, Walby
said.
There was a blue-ribbon committee
formed back in the mid 1990s regarding
this building, Walby said. So its been
on the radar for a long time. We all feel
good about the fact that we were able to
do this, and that we were prudent in
what we did. We didnt build something
that was just a Taj Mahal. We worked
within our budget. We had saved over
$1.8 million in the court building fund. It
was a good time to loan the money, with
it being under 3 percent on the bond pay-
ment interest rate. We feel good.
The new building replaces one that
was originally constructed in 1934 then
revamped in 1978.
It was the oldest building in town, he
said. And now its probably going to out-
last all of us that are sitting up on coun-
cil.
The new building is state-of-the-art in

to open April 23

A new addition is
planned for the citys web-
site, and its aimed at bene-
fiting pet owners through-
out the area.
Thanks to a joint effort
between the citys
C o m m u n i c a t i o n s
Commission and the new-
ly formed Animal Care
and Welfare Committee,
instructions for lost-and-
found pets is now avail-
able to residents who have
either found an animal or
lost a pet.
It really started with an
idea that came out of the
C o m m u n i c a t i o n s
Commission meeting,
said commission secretary
Diana Rascano. It was
probably November or
December when it came
up. I started seeing posts
on the citys Facebook
page about either lost ani-
mals or found animals. I
mentioned that it would be
nice to have some infor-
mation on the website for
residents about what to
do.
Rascano, who also
serves as the chairwoman
of the Animal Care and
Welfare Committee, saw
an opportunity to work
with both groups to make
the idea come to fruition.
It was the perfect time

Is it OK for children to
binge on mobile games?
The owners of Sylvan
Learning centers in
Grosse Pointe Farms
think so as long as they
are the right ones.
But how can parents
find games that guaran-
tee their childs screen
time is beneficial? To
help take the guesswork
out of choosing from the
thousands of apps avail-
able, Sylvan created
SylvanPlay a compre-
hensive, educational mo-
bile games network for
children in first through
fourth grades.
SylvanPlay provides a
collection of educational
games that reinforce
grade-appropriate les-
sons.
Rather than just one in-
dividual app, SylvanPlay
is launching with a li-
brary of nine fun, Sylvan-
approved edutainment
apps all packaged togeth-
er in one network. The
games include:
Critter Cruise (ages 6
9): Inspires math and
language learning as
children take a land-
mark-filled road trip
across North America,
filling up their gas tank
by correctly answering
questions.
Battle Station (ages
6 9): Helps children
improve number sense
as they defend their ship
from enemy submarines
by estimating their loca-
tion using marker
buoys.
Equator (ages 6 9,
tablet only): Challenges
children to collaborate to
bring balance to the
equator by testing their
math skills.
Angle Asteroids (ag-
es 6 9): Helps children
develop an intuition for
angles as they position
their laser to blast away
the incoming asteroids.
Pizza Party (ages 6
9): Helps children master
fractions by splitting up
the treats at a pizza party
with fun tools like the
Slice-o-matic.
Sushi Scramble (ag-
es 6 9, tablet only):
Develops language skills
through a multiplayer
word-building game
where two to four players
collaborate or compete to
serve up the most
words or longest word.
Get Rocky (ages 6
9): Inspires an interest in
science through a geolo-
gy-based racing game
that takes players to the
Earths core.
Not Lost in the
Universe (ages 6 9, tab-
let only): Children learn
about how wind, the sun,
water, and heat create
lasting sources of energy
while helping the brave
explorers on the Planet
Blarp refuel their power
cells.
Wonder Bunny Math
Race (ages 3 8): Helps
younger children learn
numbers, counting, addi-
tion and subtraction as
they help Wonder Bunny
win the race and collect
carrots along the way.
Animal Care and Welfare
Committee and work in
conjunction with the
C o m m u n i c a t i o n s
Commission, she said.
With the help of fellow
Animal Care and Welfare
Committee member
Elizabeth Nicosia, who
had already launched at
the St. Clair Lost and
Found Pets page on
Facebook, the two crafted
a rundown of just what
residents should do when
they either find a pet or
lose a pet within the city.
Elizabeth put it togeth-
er and then I edited it,
Rascano said. We tried to
make it as simple and
straightforward as possi-
ble now. We would like to
expand on it some, and
that is something we will
do, but right now we want-
ed to get it out there and
remind people that they
do need to have their ani-
mals identified too.
Reports of lost pets are
plentiful, and Rascano
hopes the guidance pre-
sented to residence will re-
sult in a safe and happy re-
union between the pet and
the family that loves them,
she said.
I know the need is out
there, Rascano said. I
just hope that we can
make a difference in re-
uniting pets with their
owners by providing this
information.
The Communications
Commission gave the
thumbs-up to the idea at
its last meeting, clearing
the way for the informa-
tion to be added to the site
within the next few
weeks.
ing description on file of a lost/found pet that was previously reported. In re-
gards to a found animal, the police officer will provide instructions. The find-
er may choose to hold the pet and attempt to find the owner with the approval
of the Police Officer.
Any veterinary will scan for a microchip free of charge. If a microchip is lo-
cated, the veterinary can assist with contacting the owner. All lost/found pets
should be posted to the St. Clair Shores Lost & Found Pets Page as well as
the For the Love of Louie-Michigan page, both on Facebook.
Post the animals photo as well as the location lost/found and the descrip-
tion of the animal. If posting a found animal, advise where the animal can be
located (e.g. St. Clair Shores Police Department) or provide your specific con-
tact information. If posting a lost pet, provide specific contact information.
Canvass your neighbors and let them know youve lost/found a pet. Post
flyers with a photo, description, name, and contact information at local pet
supply stores or any areas of high community traffic.
If youve lost your pet, also check with the Macomb County Animal Control
Shelter. Please note that the surrounding communities of Eastpointe and
Roseville do not contract with the Macomb County Animal Control Shelter
and if your pet wandered into one of those cities, your pet may have been tak-
en to the Animal Care Hospital of Sterling Heights.
Owners of lost cats should know that cats rarely wander much further than
a few houses on all sides of their homes. Be sure to check decks, shrubs,
parked cars, accessible garages any place that would provide shelter or a
hiding spot for your cat. Keep in mind that your cat could be trapped some-
where call his name and shake a treat bag or make whatever sound your
cat would be able to identify.

Happy Easter from Dolly
Dolly is blind but we dont know why.
She was surrendered to a lady who knew that
4 Paws 1 Heart would help. Dolly is a very sweet
Chihuahua who is about one year old, she had not
been spayed or vaccinated. Although she is in need of
her forever home, she is in a very loving foster home.
Dolly will be examined by an eye specialist, and will be
spayed and vaccinated before she goes to a forever
home. Without dona ons from fellow animal
advocates, 4 Paws 1 Heart couldnt give the
abandoned and abused a second chance.
Together we can make a di erence.

The parking lot behind Barrister Gardens was filled.
The tables that held the delicious goodies of nearly
three dozen local eateries were crowded with patrons.
Raffle tickets were being filled out and the Lake Shore
High School Jazz Ensemble entertained a crowd of about
1,000 guests last Sunday afternoon.
Every year this thing just gets better and better, said
Dan Sczyweski, one of the patrons of the event. This is
my third year and I really enjoy it. Theres a great mix of
food and everyone is having so much fun.
People came from all over the area as well, from as
close as local ticket winner Herman Libby to Armada res-
ident Debbie Russo, each finding their way to the St. Clair
Shores banquet hall for the event.
Ive never been here before, Russo said. And my par-
ents live in St. Clair Shores still. Theres some food here I
will be getting when we visit now. Im glad I came.
Wild Red Wings and Sandwiches was a fist-time partic-
ipant at the event, offering chicken tenders and other
items from their Harper Avenue store.
Were really happy to be here, owner Mike Koester
said. Its a lot of fun, and were meeting a lot of great peo-
ple.
The event raised thousands of dollars for the Lake
Shore High School Quarterback Club, an organization
that helps to support the districts football team by pur-
chasing items such as concussion helmets, uniforms, and
other items.

Contemporary decor
Antique primitive milking stools
4A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2014
A
ntique
wooden
milking
stools were
used by ru-
ral farmers to milk cows in
their large, hay-laden
wooden barns. Most milk-
ing stools are made com-
fortably short and light-
weight to be easily moved
from one cow to another.
Antique wooden milk-
ing stools are unique and
many handmade by re-
sourceful farmers. These
primitive stools make a
fine display or can be used
as a pedestal plant stand,
gardening stool, foot stool,
extra seat and imaginably
more. Some milking stools
are three-legged whittled
wood stools. Some are tall
enough to be used as a
side table. Because haste
makes waste, these stools
were made durable and
constructed by hand.
A primitive-looking an-
tique mid-19th century
wood milking stool recent-
ly sold with one bid on
eBay for $170 plus $25 for
shipping and handling.
Within the last year I
found three wooden milk-
ing stools at three different
estate sales. The first one I
bought for my mom be-
cause I remembered her
admiring similar ones in
the past. But it amazed me
how the stool looked so
good in many different lo-
cations throughout my
house. But every time I
looked at it, I remembered
it was meant to be given to
my dear mother. Soon af-
ter, I found the second
stool. And when my moth-
er was visiting at my
house, I let her pick which
one she liked the best, tell-
ing her one was bought for
her and how I love them
both.
She was happy and
chose the more ornate
hand-pegged primitive,
asking if I was sure it was
OK for her to take what
she thought was by far the
best.
My mom keeps hers on
the kitchen floor under her
wall-mounted phone. For
Thanksgiving, a colorful
stuffed felt turkey sat on it.
I keep mine on the floor in
the small bath below a full-
length mirror. It also looks
good on my fireplace man-
tle, raising a framed photo
set on top.
My 3-year-old grand-
son, Michael, who wanted
to be Old MacDonald last
Halloween, gets time-
out at his house when he
is overtired and naughty.
His time-out spot is the
floor beside an oversized
family room chair. I of-
fered my daughter a
choice of two farmer
stools to use for his spot, to
enhance his time for con-
templation.
I dont know if they for-
got to take the stool home
after their recent visit from
Chicago; left on purpose
because my daughter
didnt want it; or she was
too thoughtful and didnt
want to take one from me.
All I know is, to me,
these wooden pieces
speak of history and are
beautiful imperfections
and all. And I also know
its another confirmation
that I take after my father
who was always giving
things away.
Enjoy the decor within
your home and find what
makes you happy.

ord revealed
its rede-
signed 2015
Ford Focus
four-door se-
dan and Ford Focus elec-
tric before its debut at the
2014 New York Auto
Show beginning Friday,
April 18.
Fords 2015 Focus five-
door hatchback made its
debut last March at the
Geneva Motor Show. A
new version of the perfor-
mance Focus ST will be
shown later this year.
The redesigned Ford
Focus offers a bolder ex-
terior design, a more in-
tuitive and upscale interi-
or, a host of technologies
uncommon for a com-
pact car and the addition-
al powertrain option of
Fords 1.0-liter EcoBoost
engine with a new six-
speed manual transmis-
sion. Ford expects the
1.0-liter EcoBoost Focus to
raise the bar in fuel effi-
ciency among non-hybrid
compact vehicles.
For 2015, Focus adds an
SE sport package, which
includes new body treat-
ments; paddle shifters for
automatic transmissions;
a revised touring suspen-
sion; 17-inch black gloss
aluminum wheels and
P215/50 HR-17 tires. The
paddle shift feature pro-
vides drivers an additional
element of control by al-
lowing them to simulate
the manual gear selection
aspects of a manual trans-
mission and extract more
power from their engines.
Also notable for 2015,
Fords MyKey feature will
be standard on all trim lev-
els. An all-new heated
steering wheel will be
available as well as 10 dif-
ferent wheels as factory
options.
Ford Focus ranks as the
best-selling vehicle name-
plate in the world, based
on the newly released Polk
new vehicle registration
data for 2013.
It is remarkable to see
Focus again lead the in-
dustry as the No. 1-selling
vehicle nameplate on the
planet, said Jim Farley,
executive vice president,
Ford Motor Company
Global Marketing. With
the new car, weve raised
the bar again, showcasing
Fords commitment to
continuous improvement
adding better technolo-
gy for drivers and a sleek-
er, more modern exterior
across the entire Focus
family.
The smallest engine in
its growing EcoBoost fam-
ily will come standard in
Focus with an Auto Start-
Stop feature that automat-
ically shuts down the en-
gine at stops and instantly
turns it back on at takeoff.
EcoBoost technology
combines smaller-dis-
placement engines with
turbocharging, direct in-
jection, variable valve tim-
ing and Ford software to
bring customers outstand-
ing performance and fuel
economy. Ford EcoBoost
engines can deliver signifi-
cantly better fuel economy
than larger-displacement
gasoline engines.
New Focus customers
will also enjoy a quieter
ride, thanks to thicker car-
pets, side window glass
and improved engine-bay
insulation.
The new Focus benefits
from advancements in ex-
terior styling, interior de-
sign, powertrain and tech-
nology, as well as suspen-
sion and chassis upgrades.
Inside, colors and mate-
rials have a clean, modern
look, with satin chrome
detailing, new seat trims
and switches and an avail-
able heated steering
wheel. A new center con-
sole improves storage ca-
pacity.
A package of sensors
adds driver-assist technol-
ogies, including a rear
view camera, available
Blind Spot Information
System and a lane-keep-
ing system. Now standard
on the 2015 Focus is the
rearview camera viewed
on either a 4.2-inch screen
or the 8-inch screen that
comes with MyFord
Touch-equipped cars.
BLIS uses two advanced
multiple-beam radar mod-
ules, the same used with
cross-traffic alert, which
are packaged in both rear
quarter panels. The radar
identifies when a vehicle
enters the defined blind
spot zone and illuminates
an indicator light on the
corresponding sideview
mirror, providing a warn-
ing that a vehicle is ap-
proaching.
Should a Focus driver
start to drift out of the cur-
rent lane without a turn
signal activated, the lane-
keeping system provides a
warning through a series
of steering wheel vibra-
tions that mimic a rumble
strip, according to Ford. If
the unintended lane de-
parture is not corrected by
the driver, the aid function
of the system actively ap-
plies steering to help the
driver direct the car back
toward the center of the
current lane.
The suspension and
chassis upgrades include a
new shock absorber valve
design providing im-
proved interior quietness,
and a change to the rear
suspension to give drivers
a more connected feel to
the road. The electric pow-
er-assisted steering has
been retuned to make the
driver feel even more con-
nected to the road.
Ford builds the Focus in
eight manufacturing
plants on four continents.
The 2015 Focus will be
available at local dealer-
ships this summer. Its
price is not yet available.

The new Focus arrives later this
year with a bolder look. It fea-
tures a restyled hood and grille,
signature LED lighting for
headlamps and taillamps, new
rear lamp clusters and a re-
styled trunk lid. The 2015 Focus
Electric is offered in a five-door
hatchback with new visual
changes. The unique LCD
gauge cluster with electric-car-
specific gauges and meters help
the driver manage power and
range.

Know Your Skin
By Lisa A. Manz-Dulac, MD

An important part of managing
skin cancer is detection. And the
most important person for en-
suring early detection is you.
A skin self-exam is used to
identify suspicious growths that
may be cancer or moles or le-
sions that may develop into skin
cancer. Dermatologists recom-
mend that you should examine
your skin once every month,
looking for abnormal growths or
any change in the color, shape,
size or appearance of a mole or
for any lesions that do not heal.
Start your skin self-exam by
standing in front of a full-length
mirror. Examine your body
front and back, and then exam-
ine your right and lef sides with
your arms raised.
Next, bend your elbows and
look carefully at your forearms,
the back of your upper arms, and
your palms. Look at your feet,
the soles of your feet, and the
spaces between your toes.
Finally, using a hand mirror,
look at the back of your legs and
the back of your neck and scalp.
Part your hair to look at your
scalp. Also use the mirror to ex-
amine your back, buttocks, and
genital area.
It has been my experience that
patients are almost always right
when they suspect that a spot is
abnormal. So, if you fnd a sus-
picious skin growth during your
self-exam, you should always
plan to follow up your concerns
with your dermatologist.
To learn more about self-ex-
ams, contact your dermatologist,

ogy, Dr. Lisa Manz-Dulac and
Associates.

SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2014
SPORTS
here are
some base-
ball tourna-
ments where
the score
isnt as important as the
outcome.
This past weekend, at
the Spring Break Baseball
Tournament, Lakeview
High Schools varsity
baseball team did not win
the tournament they
did advance however, to
the playoff round of the
tourney at Kyte Monroe,
beating Warren Mott and
Avondale en route to the
playoff round.
In fact, the last two
games they played, both
against Macomb Area
Conference Red Division
powerhouse Dakota High
School, they were out-
scored 20-0.
The score however,
didnt matter much to
coach Scott McGregor,
who came into the early
season tournament look-
ing to get the team ready
for the important stretch
ahead the MAC Gold
season.
We look at this tourna-
ment as being very impor-
tant to us, especially head-
ing into league play, he
said. Were playing
against teams here that
are in divisions higher
than us in the MAC. So,
its nice to come out here
and see teams that play at
a high competitive level. It
helps prepare us for our
league games. We want to
win, of course, but thats
not as important as get-
ting ourselves ready for
our league play.
The Huskies played
well, McGregor said,
moving into the playoffs
of the tourney for the first
time in several years
This season we looked
at how we played in this
tournament, he said. In
a typical season we might
have played a few games
before this, but this year
we didnt get that chance
at all. So, we came into
this week looking at
things, adjusting the line-
up, seeing how our guys
execute, lots of things like
that. We did those things
and still won some games
and got to the playoffs.
Were very happy with
how we played, though.
McGregor, and coach
Perry Teolis, noted the
tournament really gave
him a chance to look at
his team, particularly the
teams younger players.
We need a couple guys
to step it up for us on the
mound, Teolis said. And
today, we put a sopho-
more out there and he
pitched pretty well for us.
Were on the right track.
Weve been cooped up in-
side for a couple of
months and were just
getting out and actually
playing baseball now.
Were on the right track
though.
The right track should
put the Huskies in the mix
for a MAC Gold crown,
McGregor said.
Were looking for a
league title this year, he
said. Theres no reason
why we cant compete
with the likes of Cousino
and Fraser and all the
other teams in the divi-
sion. Weve got a brutal
league schedule this year,
going Monday,
Wednesday and Friday
against the same teams,
but I dont see any reason
why we cant be right
there.
If players such as Ben
Shaw, who hit over .500 in
the tournament, and
pitchers Mitchell Cunha,
Jon Rozanski and Steven
Selleck continue to im-
prove on the mound, the
Huskies could find them-
selves on top of the very
competitive Gold division,
McGregor said.
Its a tough division but
we can be right there, the
coach said. We can.

2B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2014
The thaw is nearly over,
and the reality of a harsh
and long winter is melt-
ing away.
Ive been waiting to
get out on the boat for
years it seems, said boat
owner Tom Kelly. This
winter, as cold as it was,
just made me want to be
here even more.
Kelly said hes still a
couple of weeks away
from actually hitting the
waters of Lake St. Clair,
but thats done little to
dampen his enthusiasm.
Its almost here, he
said, with a smile, about
launch day. I can see
the light at the end of
the tunnel.
The preparation work
got delayed by the unsea-
sonably cold temperatures
of late March and early
April, he said.
I was planning it out
since January, he said,
scrubbing the interior of
his boat. I start getting the
itch in February, then can
usually get out here in
March, but not this year. It
was just too cold still.
Kelly is one of hundreds
gearing up for the start of
the 2014 boating season,
and these boaters are be-
ginning to flock to area
businesses and marinas
all along the shoreline and
beyond in both St. Clair
Shores and the Grosse
Pointes.
Nautical-themed gift
shops, such as Heritage
Bay and Gifts Afloat, both
located in St. Clair Shores,
have been preparing for
the start of the season,
stocking shelves and
showrooms with new
items and old standbys,
aimed at boaters and the
boating lifestyle.
Things like new Sperry
Topsider shoes, Gifts
Afloat owner Donna
Flaherty said. And new
apparel that boaters can
wear is something people
can come in for.
Flahertys shop carries
the new line of Sperry
Topsiders and more, she
said.
Heritage Bay owner
Holly Burns said boaters
are coming into her
Harper Avenue shop look-
ing for decor items.
People are starting to
come in and get things to
decorate their boat with,
Burns said. Everything
from new boat rugs to pil-
lows.
At Mikes Marine
Supply, General Manager
Bob Roberts said hes no-
ticed a rush of boaters re-
cently with an attitude of
gratitude that exceeds
what hes seen in the past.
People are so thankful
that this winter is over,
Roberts said. Everyone is
just so relieved. It was a re-
al long and hard winter for
everyone, boaters includ-
ed. Theyre coming in here
now and getting stuff to
get ready for the season,
and theyre really happy to
be able to do that.
Bottom paint, waxes
and cleaning supplies are
top of most lists, and right-
fully so, Roberts said.
Thats the first step in
getting ready for launch,
he said. You have to get
the boat ready and that
means cleaning and paint-
ing and waxing. So, natu-
rally, these items are really
popular now.
Roberts added that up-
dating electronics is some-
thing hes noticed too.
I think some people,
instead of buying a new
boat, are coming in to up-
date the one they already
have, he said. And new
electronics is something
Ive got boaters coming in
to the store to get.
By John McTaggart
Staff Writer
John Sulkowski is one of many boaters getting their boat ready for launch within
the next few weeks.
At Heritage Bay, new rugs

lar items for boaters pre-
paring for the the upcom-
