We define tangent as a line that touches a curve, how can this be applied in a real-life situation? Create your own problem including the use of a tangent line.
1. Below is a picture of a tangent line, your job is to create a new circle, then place a point outside of the circle anywhere you would like, next draw a tangent line to the circle from the point you just drew.
2. Lets see how we can apply this to a crown that is awarded the winners of the Olympics. Look at the picture below, locate and circle the tangent line.
Draw four tangent lines on the circle on the right. Then draw leaves on the lines in hopes to look like an ancient Olympian crown.
Step six: Depending on your crown, the gold crowns need to glue a gold ribbon around the top (see Ms. Johnsons example), the silver will do the same but with the silver ribbon, as well as the bronze. Those who are making a general crown (which will go to everyone who did not place in the gold, silver, or bronze spots during the Olympic Day) will add a ribbon around the top that is shiny-green. Step seven: Write your name inside the crown with a Good job! or any type of quote of encouragement.
Closure: To end the lesson I will ask, What was one piece for you that was new today? Where is a tangent line located? How many tangent lines can I draw on a circle? And, why is the answer infinity?
