English Language I Final exam Short stories No Speak English (Sandra Cisneros) The narrator (who seems to be one

ne of the neighbors) tells the story of a woman whose nickname us Mamasita. She moves to USA with her husband and the little boy, but she doesnt feel at home at all. She misses her old pink house at the other country (Which I believe is Mexico because of her mother tongue) because her family, friends and neighbours are there, but at the same time I believe that she feels frustrated because she knows how much effort her husband put to give her and her little boy a better life, so the only thing she can do is cry and be miserable. At the end of the story, the narrator tells us about something that made Mamacita very upset: her little boy starts singing a Pepsi commercial in English. She tries to stop him by yelling at him No speak English and cries really loud at the same time. The unicorn in The Garden James Thurber Its about a man who one sunny morning sees a unicorn in his garden. He decides to tell his wife about it but she doesnt react as he expected. She told the man he is a booby (crazy person) and that hes going to a booby hatch. He doesnt seem to be upset about what she tells him, so he goes out to his garden again. His wife calls the police and a psychiatrist to take him to the booby hatch, but when the men ask him if he really saw a unicorn, he says No. So now the men think that the wife is the crazy one in the house and take her to the booby hatch. I dont think they were getting along well before the episode of the unicorn. So in my opinion the man made everything un in order to make her wife angry and make the police take her away from him. Thats why at the end of the story its says He lived happily ever after. The hitch-hiker (someone who travels trough places by getting free rides from drivers or passing cars) Roald Dahl This story is about an English writer who was driving up to London in his new expensive car and suddenly sees a hitch hiker on the road. He decides to give him a lift because he used to be one before and he didnt appreciate cars that went by without stopping. The hitch hiker was a small man with a face similar to a rat and guick, eleven eyes. The writer asks him questions about his life and how he makes his living, but he doesnt give too much information. He only tells him that that hes become very good at something and he doesnt have a comer sob. When the writer decides to speed up his car to prove to the ratty-faced man that his car is actually really fast, a police man stops him and tells him that he will have to pay an expensive fine and probably spend some time in prison. The driver and his passenger drive away from the police man, and the hitch hiker confesses hes not actually a mod carrier. Thats what he told the police man, that he is on a very peculiar trade. The driver discovers his ability with his fingers when he makes a cigarette in a few seconds, and he finds out he is actually a thief (on what the passenger calls himself a fingersmith). He steals some of the writers personal stuff without him noticing to prove hes telling the truth and the writer is amazed by his great skills with his fingers. The ratty faced man tells him that he silently took the police mans book so he wont have into about them and the driver is absolutely impressed by his talent. Mr Lovedays little outing Evelyn Waugh The story is about a man called Lord Moping, who lives at an asylum he attempted suicide once at a garden party. His wife, Lady Moping and his daughter Angela went to visit him one day because it had been a long time since they last saw him. Lord Moping had a secretary called Mr. Loveday (who was actually one of the patients in the asylum, but his condition was way better than his fellow partners, so he was allowed to help patients and be their good company) who helped him with his duties and papers. Lord Mopings daughter thought he was a really kind man and asked the doctor about him. He had strangled and killed a woman when he was a young man. Angela felt sorry for him and spend several weeks and months trying to find a way to help Mr Loveday and sort of free him from the asylum. When she finally did, Mr Loveday went out of the asylum for justo two hours and decided to return. People found a bike and a strangled woman beside a road near to the asylum who overtook Mr Loveday while riding. Conclusion: He hadnt recovered from his last episode and was still a crazy man.

Little old lady from Cricket Creek Len Gray Its the story of an old woman who goes to a job interview at an insurance company in California. Her name is Mabel Jumstone and she is 65 years old. The employers (narrator an a

man called Art Browen) didnt believe at first, but Mrs Jumstone turned to be the fastest typewriter of all the other employees. She came form Cricket Creek (California) and wanted to live in a warmer place. Art and the narrator took her in and she became the best in the office.
