Sophia Halkias Film Review- Gone with the Wind

Relate what was discussed in class or text to the screening: Gone with the Wind is a remarkable film because before this film, black actors were seen only in musicals and comedies rather than in dramatic roles. For example, a common example can be thought of with Shirley Temple dancing with Bojangles. The film, who starred Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh, included black actors in the supporting cast. Gone with the Wind won an extensive amount of academy awards, including Best Picture (David O. Selznick), Best Director (Victor Fleming), Best Actress (Vivian Leigh), Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel), Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Art Direction, and Best Actor (Robert Donet). This movie is extremely long, and it was the longest film up until 1939 at 3 hours and 44 minutes. The American Film Institute ranked the number one quote of all time from this movie: Frankly, my dear, I dont give a damn. Find a related article and summarize the content: On Filmsite, an article about Gone with the Wind by an unknown author refers to the film as the most beloved, enduring and popular film of all time. This is because the script, written by Sidney Howard, was the first and only Civil War and Reconstruction Period novelthere were 1.5 million copies sold. A great amount of elements from the original novel were removed, including characters, scenes, and events. There was a huge search for the actress to play Scarlett, who ended up being Leigh. The article also refers to the various Academy Awards and nominations. http://www.filmsite.org/gone.html

Apply article to film screening in class: The article supported the way I thought about Gone with the Wind because it provided an extensive overview, similar to the one in our PowerPoint presentation slides about the film. The article provided more detail, however, than the information I learned prior to the film. Similar information included the Academy Award nominations, but interestingly, this article included many parts of the novel that were either removed or modified from the film. The film was already over three hours long, I cannot imagine how long the film would be in order to include all the details of the novel. Write a critical analysis of the film: The director, Oscar Micheaux, was the most creative black filmmaker of his time. Throughout his career, he directed over 40 films and eventually established the Micheaux Film Corporation in Chicago. The film company worked from 1918 to 1940, and the films were produced and scripted entirely by African Americans. Overtime, Oscar Micheaux eventually teamed up with white investors.

CHECKLIST FOR PLAGIARISM 1) (X) I have not handed in this assignment for any other class. 2) (X) If I reused any information from other papers I have written for other classes, I clearly explain that in the paper. 3) (X) If I used any passages word for word, I put quotations around those words, or used indentation and citation within the text. 4) (X) I have not padded the bibliography. I have used all sources cited in the bibliography in the text of the paper. 5) (X) I have cited in the bibliography only the pages I personally read. 6) (X) I have used direct quotations only in cases where it could not be stated in another way. I cited the source within the paper and in the bibliography. 7) (X) I did not so over-use direct quotations that the paper lacks interpretation or originality. 8) (X) I checked yes on steps 1-7 and therefore have been fully transparent about the research and ideas used in my paper.
