Sophia Halkias Film ReviewIt Happened One Night Relate what was discussed in class or text to the screening:

The class lecture and discussion prior to the viewing of It Happened One Night provided the class with a remarkable and explanatory overview of what to expect during the screwball comedy. Screwball comedy was a new genre and word that I am now familiarized with. Screwball comedies exhibit battle of the sexes type qualities where women were portrayed as equal to men or better than men. At this point in time in history, the roles of these women challenged the conventional roles for women in society. We discussed that these roles were brought up and more accepted when scandals began to be introduced within Hollywood. Women like Clara Bow, Jean Harlow, Mae West were amongst the other women known during this time for their beauty and sex appeal in movies. Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert play the two main characters in this particular film. Claudette Colbert plays a spoiled heiress who runs away from home, and Clark Gable is a news reporter who helps her in the process but reluctantly falls in love with her. Find a related article and summarize the content: An article titled Filmsite Movie Review: It Happened One Night, with an unknown author, provides background and insight on themes in the 1934 film. Referring to the movie as one of the greatest romantic comedies in film history, the theme of the film is referred to as the escapist theme in this particular article. In order to understand the characteristics of an escapist themed film, the author compares it to Cinderella in reverse. The film, which has much sex appeal, conflicts with socioeconomic classes as it focuses on a mismatched couple; an arrogant heiress and an unsympathetic newspaper writer. Additionally, the film incorporates much wit and sarcasma type of script unique to screwball comedies during this time. The Walls of Jericho scene is one of the most classic scenes ever

created within the film industry. This particular scene is when the two put up a cover so that they are able to sleep in the same bedroom during their road trip without being married as the heiress escapes and he assists. The film astonishingly won Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Adaptationfive various categories for the Academy Awards. http://www.filmsite.org/itha.html Apply article to film screening in class. How did article support or change the way you thought about It Happened One Night: This particular article, which offered background on the film, supported the way I thought about It Happened One Night. This film epitomized the characteristics of a screwball comedy. The script reaped sarcasm and wit from both Colbert and Gable. Colberts character exhibited a strong, but spoiled, woman with confidence who did not take nonsense from any man, especially Gable. She let the majority of his snarl remarks go without recognition, or replied with just as much sass. Additionally, the sex appeal of Colbert made for an interesting contradiction with the love-hate feelings Gable felt for her throughout the film. The Walls of Jericho theme was humorous and popular, as the two characters slept in the same room out of wedlock. The film was an entertaining romantic comedy that won many different Academy Awards under various categories. The actors and director were extremely successful within their career from this film. Write a critical analysis of the film: I truly enjoyed the romantic comedy It Happened One Night. Director Frank Capra did a marvelous job epitomizing the screwball comedy with these exceptional actors. I have extensively studied Flappers and was interested in their newly found freedom and sex appeal. Their new clothes, hobbies, and interests were unorthodox but things have changed so much more since then. I enjoy the theme of the escapist storydespite their socio-economical differences, the two found love in one another and put their differences aside.

In the end, I enjoyed the fact that Colberts father guided her right into the arms of Gable on her wedding day to another man. Eventually, the Walls of Jericho were knocked down and they were finally together after endless adventures, tension, and unconventional situations.
