Piled Mat Foundations

Abstract: In recent years need for Piled Mat Foundations has risen due to factors like high groundwater or when base soil is susceptible to large settlements. Hence, a piled-mat foundation which is a composite structure consisting pile and raft has proved to be an appropriate alternative to conventional pile or mat foundations. The current study discusses the need for Piled Mat Foundation and the advantages they hold over other conventional foundations. Further, the problems pertaining to unregulated design of Piled-Mat Foundations have been explored which arise due to no design rules and standards for design. Also, design methods for design of Piled-Mat foundations have been presented starting with conventional simple methods and further moving on to more complex and efficient methods like the Finite Element Analysis. Finally a real life example has been taken and studied and presented in form of a case study.
