The following is part of a talk given to a group of students by Helen, a volunteer from the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. READ THE TALK CAREFULLY AND ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. My name is Helen. I have been a member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul since secondary school. My volunteer work with Saint Vincent de Paul is an important part of my life. I volunteer three times a week. I visit the elderly on a Monday. I really enjoy making these visits and taking the time to chat, share stories and swap news. I help in a soup kitchen on a Wednesday. Three of us organise the collection of clothing for the Saint Vincent de Paul shop in Waterford. From time to time I visit hospitals and prisons. A few times a year I help out on holiday breaks and day trips that the Saint Vincent de Paul organise for young people.

As part of my work I become friends with the people I help and try to enable them to help themselves. We in the Saint Vincent de Paul try to accept people as they are and try to create a caring place, respecting the dignity of those who need our help. Sometimes I would visit someone just to say hello and to let them know that we are here for them if they need us. We only ever offer advice when it is asked for and do not believe in telling people what they should do. The Saint Vincent de Paul offers a really important service for people who need help and support. At school I was inspired by the founding story of the Saint Vincent de Paul. I was also interested in Frederic Ozanam and his commitment to helping people in need. The main reason why I decided to volunteer with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is that I believe that, as a Christian, we should help those in need.
