NOSTALGIA
Friday, April 25, 14 Hi my name is Taylor Hillestad A thing about my is I have a passion for Nostalgia. Whether its my love for 80s music, looking back at my childhood days, or learning about my families life, I enjoy celebrating memories.
Friday, April 25, 14 We celebrate life when looking back and holding on to memories. Memories are to be cherished. They can make us feel comforted and accomplished.
Friday, April 25, 14 We also can enjoy passing on them on from generation
Friday, April 25, 14 Unfortunately, as some age, they cannot hang on to all of these memories anymore.
Friday, April 25, 14 My grandma Dorothy is one of the people who suffers from dementia. So even though I having a longing for the past, as a designer, I need to start thinking of the future as well. So I wanted to combine my love for Nostalgia with future technology and visual communications. This degree project is inspired and based around her.
Friday, April 25, 14 It is called NostalgiCare. It is an iPad app that is aimed towards dementia patients with the use of fun activites
HOW CAN AN IPAD APP THAT IS TARGETED TOWARDS DEMENTIA PATIENTS AT NURSING HOMES HELP STIMULATE THEIR PERSONAL MEMORIES WITH THE HELP OF FAMILY & STAFF?
Friday, April 25, 14 It all started from my thesis question I wanted the challenge of not just make things look pretty, but understand how design can do the duty of assisting the disabled. I wanted to dig deep in researching how to construct and engineer a system that will be formatted towards dementia patients. -designers are relevant to helping dementia patients remember memories because we have the knowledge to understand how to format visuals and content in a narrative structure. We can create an engaging system that organizes their lives in a unique way. -designers also have the skill sets to structure the appropriate typography and interactive functions to make the tasks easy to comprehend.
Friday, April 25, 14 -When rst starting out, I was really interested in the idea that iPads were getting more popular in nursing homes -In my ndings I learned that it is actually easier for seniors to use an iPad than a computer -iPads will be a great tool when it comes to organizing and storing content instead of carrying materials and tools with you all the time -The iPad can reveal certain information and content in a sequential manner
REMINISCENCE THERAPY
Friday, April 25, 14 -When researching healthy activities to stimulate a patients memory daily -Came across the term Reminiscence therapy-became KEY TERM during project -the process of recalling personal experiences from an individuals past -This is the type of memory activities patients enjoy doing BECAUSE...
Friday, April 25, 14 ....It encourages older people to become actively involved in reliving and sharing their past with others. -it also encourages the elderly to communicate, it reduces depression as it helps them regain their interests-helps cope with aging -Memory mats -I wanted the patients at nursing homes to enjoy talking to others and enjoy participating in activities -I believe talking about their past will be an enjoyable topic based o! research -patients show pride when talking about their life
Friday, April 25, 14 -Also for research I interviewed the activities coordinator there at Cerenity Senior Care where my grandma lives and she always tries to make the activities personal somehow. It makes the patients open up more.
Friday, April 25, 14 -denitely wanted it to be image heavy -but not like an ordinary photo album -quizzes them
Friday, April 25, 14 -Fortunate enough to go home for SB to test it out -see what worked/didnt -interviewed the activities coordinator again-she gave me more topics

April 2, 2014
Hi Grandma! I hope you are doing well! I will graduate from college in a month. Cant wait to see you when I come home! I am really enjoying my last few weeks here in Kansas City. It gets warmer here faster than in Minnesota, so loving the weather. Anyway, I will call you in a little bit to catch up!

Friday, April 25, 14 Overall I am proud that I was able to design a system that is really researched oriented and that is personal to me and my grandma. I was able to think in ways I have never thought of before as a designer I am am happy I challenged myself. I combined my love for both Past times and the future and enjoyed thinking about how to keep memories alive.
THANK YOU
