Stress Recognizing ways of dealing with stress Students will have demonstrate knowledge of healthy vs. unhealthy coping strategies. Students will name two healthy coping strategies; students will recognize 2 unhealthy coping strategies; students will define coping strategy Review behavioral expectations. Use proximity. Use specific praise. Prompt students in review from last lesson. Instead of walking for ind. Practice have them do thumbs up or down. Health 4.5 Demonstrate the ability to express emotions constructively, including use of anger management skills.

Anticipatory Set:

Have directions on the board for students when they walk in. While this is going on play relaxing music. Directions will state for students to write on the board a mental symptom of stress, a physical symptom of stress (to review last weeks lesson) , or what they think coping means ( a preview of today). Award a jolly rancher to all students who try. Teacher will explain coping is a way of dealing with stress. Teacher will give an example of a stressor in their own life and how they cope with it in a positive way. Teacher will explain the two ways of coping- healthy and unhealthy. Teacher will give 4 examples of each. Have students follow along by taking notes.

Independent Practice:

Do a think pair share activty. Have students lean over to their partner and have students discuss what coping is; give students 30 seconds to discuss. Ask for volunteers to explain and teacher reviews as needed. Students will then be given indidual white boards. Following this ask the students for 1 example of a healthy coping strategy.Allow 30 seconds and then have them hold white boards up. Following this have them hold up their boards for unhealthy coping strategys. Teacher will play a game with students. Teacher will explain that students will walk to one side of the room or the other. Wall one will be if students see something that appears unhealthy. Wall two will be if they see something that looks healthy. Review what coping means. For exit ticket have students write out 2 examples of healthy and 2 examples of unhealthy coping strategies.
