Week 1 OBJECTIVE: The learner will sit properly and listen to the story. The learner will begin to recognize key features of the writing style of Dr. Seuss (rhyming, made up creatures, silly, etc.) LESSON PRESENTATION
ANTICIPATORYSET:

-Review behavior -Does anyone recognize the character on the front of this book? The Cat in the Hat. -Introduce/review author, Dr. Seuss & Read Across America Week (next week) -Raise your hand if you have read a Dr. Seuss book before. Which ones? -Read title. Can you really read with your eyes shut? INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Read I Can Read with my Eyes Shut -The Cat in the Hat read all over the place in all different ways. Where is your favorite place to read? -He read about all different things (ankles, ants, crocodile pants). What is your favorite thing to read about? -What did you notice about the words in this book? (rhyming) -Characters? (made-up/silly like Foo-Foo the Snoo) -What is a hut-zut? Is it real? (made up words/items) CLOSURE: -Students will learn to draw & color the Cat in the Hat from our book using the step by step directions -Book Checkout If Needed: Rhyme Time Song

LESSON PRESENTATION

-Review behavior -What do you remember about Dr. Seuss as an author? How does he like to write? -Introduce the book, Oh, the Thinks you can Think! -What does it mean to think? What is something you thought about today? INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Read Oh, the Thinks you can Think! Pausing to have them answer questions asked in the book and answer some of my own, for example-- how do you think schlopp would taste? -Lets talk about how Dr. Seuss writes. Did anyone notice. -Made up creatures? Guff, snuvs, bloogs, zong, jiboo, vipper, beft -Made up things? Schlopp, balloon swimming pool, rink-rinker-fink -Made up places? Na-Nupp & 3 moons, Da-dake -What did you notice about the words in this book? (rhyming) CLOSURE: -Lets rhyme like Dr. Seuss. -Review behavior (library voice) -What do your remember about Dr. Seuss as an author? How does he like to write? -Introduce the book, Please Try to Remember the First of Octember! Is Octember a real month? What month is it now? Go over the months in the beginning of the book as a group. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Read Please Try to Remember the First of Octember! Pausing for questions & comments -Made up creatures? Made up things? Made up places? What did you notice about the words in this book? (rhyming) -What gift would you want to have on the First of Octember? -Review parts of the book (title, spine, pages, spine label, cover, etc.) - Sing author & illustrator song. Review author & illustrator by using author/ illustrator cards.

CLOSURE: -Show students how to play the "12 months of the year" game on the computer.
