Third Sunday of Easter

Out of Sight, but not out of Reach!

In todays Gospel we meet two of Jesuss former disciples
walking along the road to Emmaus while singing the blues! They
invited Jesus (though they didnt realize that it was Jesus) to join
in their sad song. He declined. Instead of accepting the invitation
to share in their misery, Jesus invited them to share in his victory!

But first, he decided to take them through a little show and tell; or
more accurately, tell and show! He TOLD them about all the
places in the scriptures that pointed out that he was the long
awaited Messiah for whom they had longed. As he spoke with
them something unexpected began to happen: Heart burn! But
this was no ordinary heart burn caused by acid indigestion. No,
this heart burn was caused by a foretaste of resurrection! Have
you been in church with low to no expectations of the message
having any relevancy to your life and then, to your surprise, found
the sermon or song speaking directly to your heart!

Jesus found the two disciples feeling hopeless and alone like an
abandoned camp site with only ashes and stubble left where a
healthy fire once burned brightly. But Jesus knew that deep
down there were embers still burning if only barely. So, he added
the fuel of his Word and suddenly they were on fire again! But
he wasnt done. To keep the fire blazing he had to do one more
thing. He had to SHOW them where they could count on his
perpetual and tangible presence day in and day out. He had to
show them that even when he is out of sight, hes never out of
our reach! He took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it,
and with that their eyes were opened We are told that at
as soon as they recognized him, he vanished from their sight.
But instead of feeling abandoned, they rejoiced and ran back to
Jerusalem to tell the others that Jesus was alive AND still
present! Jesus opened their eyes to his real and actual
presence in the Eucharist. No longer singing the Blues, now they
were spreading the Good News! So, what were you singing
about before you came to church today? Actually, that doesnt
really matter. The real question is, what will you be singing when
you leave?
