PRESIDENT MESSAGE
It is a widely known fact that K-POP and Korean dramas are enjoyed and loved by so many fans from around
the world. In the 1960s, a number of Taekwondo masters travelled around the world to promote Hallyu (the
Korean Wave) with just a single Taekwondo uniform in their possession.
It has been some 50 years since that day, and now Hallyu is a huge cultural trend attracting citizens from
all around the world. KBS has played an important role in forming and spreading this Hallyu wave. Dramas,
documentaries and K-POP have been produced and promoted by KBS. KBS efforts have been recognized
all over the world. We do this by providing quality programs to 50 million households across 88 different
countries via the KBS World channel.
KBS has brought the world K-POP concerts through highly successful K-POP TV programs like Music Bank
in places like Japan, France, U.S.A., Chile and many South East Asian countries. I certainly hope that you,
our readers, will gain more knowledge about Korean culture through our monthly Kwave magazine, and that
it will bring you closer to Korea. Hallyu is for the world, and most importantly, Hallyu is for you.
Thank you

that impresses the most with dancing, it has
grabbed peoples attention at once with bold
new moves. The boys of Teen Top worked with
the famous hit-maker Brave Brothers to make
a powerful comeback to the stage.
In the month of September, a close race be-
tween the female drama OST singers and the
male idol groups was seen in the charts. Yet
to come are the upcoming male artist solo re-

Park Jin-youngs comeback. G-Dragon and his
widespread, xed fan base and Park Jin-young

DRAMA OSTS ARE RULING THE CHARTS
The hit songs of this fall season are, needless
to say, drama OSTs! The currently leading hit is
Touch Love by Yoon Mi-rae (who is also known
by her stage name T). She made her debut as
a member of the group Uptown in 1997, and
since then, she has distinguished herself as
one of the foremost rappers of Korea. It has
been some time since she put out a new re-
lease, but with her new OST for the drama Mas-
ters Sun, she is back in the spotlight, along
with the drama itself.
Another OST for the same drama, Crazy of
You by Hyo-rin (vocalist for the group SISTAR),
came out a week later and has also proven to
be a popular hit. Together, these two songs are
number 1 and 2 in the charts. Furthermore, the
true queen of OSTs has joined in the rally. Baek
Ji-young and her deep voicelast heard in Dont
Forget (Iris) and That Woman (Secret Garden)
is back with Is Crying for the TV drama Good
Doctor. This inux of songs from gifted singers
for TV dramas has made quite a favorable im-
pression on TV viewers all over Korea and has
made indelible marks on the K-POP charts last
month.
Furthermore, Sun-mi, a former member of the
Wondergirls has come out with her own single
after a 3-year hiatus. Her song 24 hours ex-
presses a different side of the singer. With a
new pink hairstyle and barefoot performance,
Sun-mi rose to the top in no time. Kim Ye-rim,
who turned from audition winner to singing
star with her song All Right, continues to climb
with her new song Rain. She is enlarging her
niche market with her soulful arrangements
that deviate from regular ballads.
DEEPENING GROWLS FROM
THE MALE IDOL STARS
All of this recent female singing power does
not mean that the men are totally overshad-
owed. The best rookie group in the rst half
of the year was EXO. With just under a million
albums sold, including a newly repackaged al-
bum release, EXO is in it for the long run, most
recently afrmed by another hit song, Growl.
What is more encouraging for the members of
EXO is that their popularity, once concentrated
among female fans through the songs Mama
and Wolf, has widened. EXOs new hit Growl
has resulted in a growth in the groups fan base
so that it now spans fans from multiple gener-
ations. The song has a simple, but stimulating
rhythm and melody, and an addictive hook that
everyone can follow after listening to it only
once, which has made it possible for EXO to
recreate itself as a new star that is accepted
unanimously. At this rate, we can expect to see
EXOs name everywhere at the end of the year
ceremonies.
Teen Top has also restarted its engine. The
powerful title of Teen Tops new song is Rock-
ing. What the members of Teen Top have add-
ed as their new weapon, along with a merry
club sound, is free step! As Teen Top is a group

really ghting a erce war for the familys in-
heritance on the inside. As soon as the presi-
dent falls, these people would ruthlessly ght
for property as if they had been waiting for that
moment. To realistically portray the story, the
production team of Empire Gold took the ob-
servation and research approach. This not only
resulted in an observation of a single society,
but it also showed the underlying depths to
Korean capitalism and what lies within most
capitalistic countries spheres and therefore
leading to a deeper study of human nature in
general. Where most conglomerate-based TV
dramas in Korea are about cheating spouses
and other such personal affairs, it is a rare
thing to see a social drama dealing with such
a heavy subject.

KINGS FAMILY, DRAMA FOR
TODAYS IN-LAWS
KBS2TVs weekend drama You Are the Best
held its lead to the very end with ratings nish-
ing off at 29.2%. It was a pity that they did not
reach 30%, but as the titular role was an acting
challenge for IU, the show is still viewed as a
moderate success. Following You Are the Best
is Kings Family. From the beginning, it pulled in
23.7% of the ratings, placing it in second place.
Kings Family is about the large family of Wang
Bong and his four daughters, Soo-bak, Ho-bak,
Gwang-bak and Hae-bak.
Up until now, most Korean weekend dramas
focused on the in-law world of the husbands
family. When a woman gets married, her hus-
bands family is addressed as shidaek. There
is even a new word that was derived from
this, shi-world, meaning the husbands fam-
ily. Traditionally, a Korean daughter-in-law is
utterly dominated by her mother-in-law, but
Kings Family has turned the tables on this and
uniquely portrays a story involving only the
cheo-world (wifes family).
Traditionally, a son-in-law is considered a very
important guest in his wifes familys home.
The mother-in-law would always be respectful
and take care of the son-in-law. However, as
the social status of women has gone up, there
has been an increase in the number of sons-
in-law who now walk on eggshells around their
in-laws. This phenomenon has led to the rise
of the cheo-world. The story of Kings Family
focuses on the four sisters and their husbands,
who all feel uneasy around and cowed by their
mother-in-law.
MBCs weekend drama Gold, Appear! is ranked
number 3 with 22.9% of the ratings. This dra-
ma is about three stepbrothers, each with
a different mother, who live together in one
family. Dramatic conicts between the cur-
rent stepmother, who frames an ex-wife to get
her kicked out of the house, and the son who
stands up to her are drawn out in this drama. In
addition, a love triangle between an elder son
and his wife and her twin sister adds to the ten-
sion, attracting the viewers attention.
EMPIRE GOLD SHOWS THE NAKED
SIDE OF CAPITALISM
SBS mini-series Empire Gold is ranked number
9 with 13.1% of the ratings. The production
team for The Chaser is behind the production
of Empire Gold. Empire Gold is about political
authority, involving mental battles between
members of the rich, and the story of ordinary
people ghting against the rich, gaining much
sympathy from the public. Empire Gold focus-
es on the inner conicts of a chaebol family
(rich family in control of a conglomerate). If
The Chaser was a story of a man trying to gain
political authority starting from the ground up,
then Empire Gold is about a man trying to gain
capital authority directly from the top.
In Empire Gold, the chaebol familys decisions
are made at the table. At this golden table,
with one phrase, a few trillions in investment
plans might be shared or a huge management
failure can be covered up with one word from
the company president. Into this mighty empire
enters the main character of the show. Coming
from an ordinary background, this man strug-
gles through a lot of hardship before forming a
marriage of convenience to the chaebol family
heiress and thereby joining the table as one of
the family.
These lofty people around the table smile as
if they are one very close family, but they are

the time being, The Spy is showing a slighter
edge in selling power.
Once again, it must be stated that Korean
movies have grabbed the publics interest with
whirlwind force. In the movie industry in gen-
eral, is this phenomenon a good thing or a bad
thing? Its too soon to tell. Furthermore, there
are other rising voices that need our attention.
Director Jung Ji-youngs documentary lm Proj-
ect Cheonan Ship was recently prevented from
major release due to the power struggle going
on between distributors and multiplex movie
theaters and has become a focal point in this
controversy. It is time for the public to weigh
in and exert some degree of control over this
issue.

HORRORS UNEXPECTED SUCCESS,
HIDE AND SEEK
Korean movies work extremely well in Korea.
The past month has made that point quite obvi-
ous. There was no demand for foreign movies.
It has been said that major Hollywood studio,
Sony Buena Vista, had a hard time this year in
Korea. There were only a few movies that sold
more than a million tickets.
Elysium (released on August 29th) was the
only Hollywood release to sell close to a mil-
lion tickets. To promote this movie, the main
actors, Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley, visited
Korea. Normally when a movie is promoted in
this way, more than 2 to 3 million tickets will
sell after the movies release. However, it looks
like a domestic movie tornado has driven all
of the foreign lms out and away from Korean
screens.
In the past month, two Korean movies dominat-
ed the movie market, The Terror Live and Hide
and Seek. The Terror Live came out rst. It was
a project from the well-known Ha Jung-woo,
so it easily sold close to 5 million tickets. As
for Hide and Seek, nobody expected it to be a
bit hit. In the Korean movie industry, the genre
people hesitate the most to invest in is horror.
Normally the female demographic drops off for
horror lms, so it is hard to guarantee a stable
number of viewers.
However, Hide and Seek smashed all expecta-
tions, even winning out over The Terror Live.
Movie distributors Lotte and NEW are now
expressing an ambition to sell over 6 million
tickets.
The success of these two movies is a topic
of great interest as it marks the comeback of
both of the movies producers, Lee Chun-yeon
and Kim Mi-hee. The producer of The Terror
Live, Lee Chun-yeon, is the head director of
Cine 2000, which produced the Whispering
Corridors series. The producer of Hide and
Seek, Kim Mi-hee, is the head of Dream Cap-
ture, which has produced 43 movies so far,
including Attack the Gas Station.
So what is the main factor behind the success
of these two horror lms? The overall belief is
that it is because these two movies have ac-
curately captured and expressed the nervous
tension in todays Korean society, especially
that of the middle class. Moreover, these mov-
ies are middle to low budget lms, and this is
highly likely to become a new landmark in mov-
ie production in the future.

THE FACE READER AND THE SPY TO FUR-
THER PUSH THE KOREAN MOVIE SPIRAL
Director Kim Sung-soos The Flu has sold more
than 3 million tickets thus far. In the critics
eyes, the movie had too weak of a plot, but
even so, moviegoers have expressed high sat-
isfaction with the movie. Director Kim Sung-
soo has experienced some misfortune in the
last few years, but he has made a new turn
through this lm.
Despite its aesthetic excellence, Director Bong
Joon-hos Snowpiercer was expected to do
poorly due to its rather difcult subject matter.
However, this prediction was completely refut-
ed, and the movie has proven to be a great box
ofce success. It became obvious that people
were excited about Director Bong Joon-hos
project and showed greater faith in him than
in the critics.

KARA had an image based on cuteness. For the members of
KARA, who have been on the scene for seven years now, that
image may have been both the fruit of their labors and the
shell that caged them. They must have wanted to show the
world their limitless potential, and that they have matured.
KARA has been around for a relatively long time among girl
groups. In those years, KARAs members have enjoyed incred-
ible popularity. On the other hand, they have been subject to
much gossip. This is likely a testament to just how much the
public is interested in them. They are now back with a new
song that transforms their image completely, Cant Be a Lady.
It is a song in search of timeless transformation.
We tried a new method for this interview. We gave the mem-
bers a list of questions and time to talk freely among them-
selves. Then, we put their conversation into a single answer,
instead of relaying the opinion of just a particular member of
the group. Although what each member said is unclear, the
format has its own signicance. These are the thoughts and
opinions of the ve ladies of KARA now.
One of the things that stand out in Cant Be a Lady is
the masculine black-and-white costumes and the dance
routine, which are very different from KARAs previous
works that focused on sex appeal. What is the idea
behind it?
In order to express how KARA has matured, we tried a man-
nish style (slang for a more masculine look) instead of using
simple sexy or lovely concepts. The new motif arose from
the idea of designing a performance that shows our mature
side without emphasizing sex appeal. It was a decision made
after coming to the conclusion that we were at a stage when
we wanted to show another side of ourselves.
Now that you mention mannish style, when do you feel
that you are more masculine? You know, the inner man
inside?
Hmm

when xing something or feeling hungry? We need

to eat well to have the energy. We dont want to think about
being hungry. When we have been working on empty stom-
achs for a long time, we all begin making strange sounds and
we sometimes say the word hungry in a low and resonating
voice.

The last part of Cant Be a Lady where a spurned
woman utters curses is very memorable. Emotional
engagement is important in singing, so what are you
feeling when you sing on stage?
In the parts that require strong emotions, we sing as if we
are voicing our emotions about that man, and we express sad-
ly rational emotions in the calmer parts. So, the new song has
a bigger message to deliver than our previous songs. The part
where Seung-yeon sings Yeah~! in a clear high note then
immediately follows that with Hoo~! and laughter is the ex-
pression of a womans heart that has shed its fears after a
breakup.
As young ladies, you must like to have fun. You must
have your own way of having fun. What do you like to do?
All of us have dogs. They are of various breeds, and as they
are all so lovable, so we never stop boasting about them.
(Laughs) Showing each other pictures and videos of the dogs
and sharing stories about them seems to be our main pas-
time these days. We also like trying great foods and going to
famous restaurants, so we are always happy whenever there
is good food!
The song Mister is strongly associated with KARA.
Is there something new that you would like to
emphasize?
First of all, there is the taking off the ring dance. Isnt getting
rid of the couple-ring (matching rings that couples who are
dating in Korea wear) the thing that is most associated with
breaking up? The woman in Cant Be a Lady isnt cool-headed,
so the dance routine expresses that aspect. There is a move
that depicts taking off the ring from the ring nger and throw-
ing it on the oor. And the end part of the chorus is accompa-
nied by a move where we bump the back of the hand with a
hip, which we call the hip-up dance.

The new album follows the theme of maturing. It seems
that your young image from your rookie days is gone.
Do you think that you have matured on the inside?
I was very mature for a child when I was young. Now I am
going in the opposite direction by trying to express my feel-
ings as they are without restraining myself and to show my
childish side. That might be a little surprising to people.
It has been seven years since your debut. What is the
most memorable or the most touching thing that
occurred in that time?
It is probably our exclusive concert in Korea and in the To-
kyo Dome. It is a great thing to have had the chance to sing
on such huge stages as Park Gyu-ri, Han Seung-yeon, Nicole,
Goo Ha-ra, and Kang Ji-young. Our concert last year was
overwhelming, and we talked about it a lot. The Tokyo Dome
concert was the same. To stand on a stage and be watched
by 50,000 people was something that took a lot of courage,
and it all felt like a dream. Maybe it was because of the glow
sticks, but it felt almost like we had jumped into space. We
are always touched by the fact that the fans give us their love
and encourage us.
KARA must have a special meaning for the members.
It is a very important part of our lives. If we are all characters
in a book who follow the storyline, then KARA is like the cover
that envelops us.
What does KARA dream about for the future?
We hope that by working hard and staying true to the mo-
ment, we can build a life that is like a book full of good mem-
ories when we look back on it in the future. That is what we
want for KARAs future.
Tens of idol groups come and go each year. To thrive for seven
years, KARA must have burned bright like the sun at times
and been hurt and in pain during other times. Lets hope that
their renewed strength comes from an even stronger inner
source. In a more relaxed light, you should be able to feel
KARAs vibeits stronger than ever!

YOU PLUS ME EQUALS US
Have you ever seen Teen Top perform? Describing their free-
style choreography without making it sound like an exagger-
ation is difcult. How long did it take to nally put all those
moves together? Watching them seem to touch sky makes
your heart feel like burstinga feeling that can only be un-
derstood by those who have felt it before. The many yous
and mes coming together to form Teen Top is sheer joy.
Over time, the members of Teen Top have started to resemble
each other, too.
According to Niel, lately Teen Top is really in sync:
It was extremely exhausting before, but now, we are com-
pletely in sync, even with just a little bit of practice. Because
we spent so much time with each other, we hardly ever get
our moves wrong. Its so much fun!
The lyrics of the groups newly released song Rocking talk
about a couple that continuously ghts and makes up. It must
be stressful to be with one another like that. After listening to
the 3-minute, 30-second song, youre left asking, Does the
couple get back together? Do they break up? What happens?
C.A.P answers simply:
Of course they get back together! After the ght ends, they
ask each other where the other one is.
LACING UP AGAIN
Its been three years since Teen Tops debut, yet their perfor-
mances still feel new and fresh. What is the ultimate secret
to their staying power among the idol groups that are created
and fade away almost every day? Chunji tells us what sets
Teen Top apart from the rest:
All of our members work hard and strenuously to pull off
the group choreography. And there are things that only Teen
Top can do, too! I think those are the secrets to Teen Tops
success.
There is much more to Teen Top than what they have already
shown us.

After a long break, Ivy released
the single I Dance this past June.
Ivy has matured beyond the mere
showmanship from her younger
days on stage.

IVY NOWADAYS
An interview with Ivy was something to look forward to. Why?
For me, it was simply because we share the same birthday
and therefore have something in common. Before the in-
terview, from her personal blog to news articles, I combed
through all the information out there about Ivy. A photo of
her entire body in bruises and a shot of her making some
pottery were especially eye-catching. Based on those photos,
it seemed as if shes the type to get completely absorbed in
whatever she does.
Ivy: The bruises were from diving practice. I couldnt avoid it
since I was training to be on a diving show. Hmm
......
I started
learning how to make pottery because I was practicing for
the musical Ghost, which opens at the end of November. Im
putting extra effort into learning.
So somehow she is managing to balance working and learn-
ing something new. This is the ultimate killing two birds with
one stone.
THERES NO FUN TO BEING PRIM AND PROPER
Is there anything more beautiful than a person completely im-
mersed in their work? The image of Ivy making pottery was
stuck in my head, so I couldnt resist wondering what kind
of pottery and in which color and pattern she would make if
she were to make something that resembles Park Eun-hye
(Ivys real name) and not Ivy? And what would be inside the
nal piece?
Ivy: Its no fun being clean-cut and correct. I want it to con-
tain my uniqueness, though it may turn out a bit crooked. The
pottery piece should be red, and it would be even better if it
were attractive and curvy! (Laughs) Hmm
......
as for what is
inside, I hope that there are things that are heavy and solemn.
Something that could hold me tight.
THE EVOLUTION OF PARK EUN-HYES HAPPINESS
Its been eight years since her debut. Meanwhile, Ivy has de-
nitely evolved. There is so much more to her than just her
sexy charisma. But one more question has to be asked: Does
this apply to Park Eun-hye as well? Is her happiness evolving?
Ivy: When I rst debuted, it was amazing. I was highly popu-
lar back then, but I wasnt happy personally. I had to act and
think in a way that was already framed for me. However, I am
free now. My company is in full support of anything I want to
do. I want to spend my time being happier and having more
fun!
IVYS BLOG: LIVING A CHEWY LIFE
Ivy manages her own blog (http://blog.naver.com/ivygre-
entee). Every little detail of her life, from scrumptious meals
and newly purchased shoes to fun times with friends and her
travel log, is all featured on her blog.
Ivy: When I was young, my teachers would always write com-
ments like very distracted, full of curiosity and active, but
lacks perseverance on my report cards. The same applies to
me as an adult! Scatterbrained, tomboyish, free and easy, and
someone who has a lot of energy! Thats me, Ivy; and thats
me, Park Eun-hye. (Laughs)
Ivy is a Scorpio. Sharp? Secretive? I dont know about that.
However there is one thing I can say for sure: just being
around her is exciting. This is not just your regular poison
ivythis one is virulently contagious.

Secret Love is a dramatic series that looks back
at the discolored meanings in love through a
man who is against the idea of falling in love
and a woman who is courageous in love.
The man who is afraid of falling in love? His
loved one has recently died, and the woman
responsible for her death is the one who tries
to open up the mans heart again. Will he open
up by concealing his past? The twos pairing
seems impossible.
The story is truly a tragic one. Even in Shake-
speares Romeo and Juliet, the two families are
the ones who are sworn enemies, not the lov-
ers themselves. Is it even possible for a man
to fall in love with the person he has sworn to
hate?
Secret Love is expected to premiere in Korea
after The Innocent Man nishes airing on KBS
2TV. Secret Love has already been exported to
Japan, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and other
Asian countries before its ofcial release. Pub-
lic expectations are high for this unique and
dramatic storyline about the love that develops
from an embittered man for the woman who
killed his previous lover.

September is a very special month for Ji Sung.
September 25
th
is the premiere date for his
new drama, Secret Love, and September 27
th

is to be the most important day of his life, his
wedding day. He will soon be joining the ranks
of men who are no longer in stock.
Ji Sung seems to be an actor with deep integri-
ty. He has the ability to make others feel com-
fortable around him and seems to be generous
in nature. Lets delve into Ji Sungs charms.
ITS BEEN 15 YEARS SINCE YOU STARTED
YOUR ACTING CAREER. IS THERE ANYTHING
SPECIAL ABOUT THIS NEW DRAMA? Ive
been the main character in a romantic com-
edy and in historical dramas. Conventional
melodrama is another important genre, dont
you think? Recently, there werent as many of
this type of show on TV, and that is why I am
looking forward to acting in Secret Love. The
rst impression I got from the script was quite
positive as well. A good-hearted, studious man
(Bae Soo-bin), in love and starting out as a
prosecutor, has his life changed through one
key accident, and the woman who loves him
(Hwang Jung-eum) suffers through the kind of
pain that eventually changes her permanently.
The story is basically revolving around human
anguish.
IS HWANG JUNG-EUM LEARNING MORE
ABOUT ACTING THROUGH YOU? Thanks for
saying that. (Laughs.) I dont think that I know
more about acting than her, and we do have
to be good partners in this project. I denitely
want to improve in acting out my role with her
in Secret Love. I want to make our roles mean-
ingful with the talents that we have now. I also
would feel very grateful to Jung-eum if she told
me about things that I didnt know about be-
fore. Jung-eum is very honest and expressive of
her emotions. I get calm when Im next to her.
Im developing a sense of trust as well.
DO YOU HAVE A ROLE MODEL FOR LIFE IN
GENERAL? I had quite a few chances to ask
more experienced actors for advice before, but
now I have fewer chances to do so. Once a dra-
ma starts, you yourself have to be poured into
your characters role. I remember actress Kim
Hae-sook telling me that when I was a rookie.
When I faced scenes that I couldnt do my best
in, I would criticize myself. Its not like that any-
more because I really understand and appreci-
ate this piece of advice. Working with actress
Go Doo-shim helped me grow as well. When
she was playing the mother of my character in
a past drama we were in, she came in early to
the set and practiced. I saw that and thought,
That is the truest image of an actor that youll
ever see.
ONE OF YOUR COMMENTS, I DONT LIKE
CELEBRITY-TYPE PEOPLE, WAS ONCE A
HOT ISSUE. WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY IT?
I just meant that I didnt like the life of a fa-
mous actor. It felt as if I hadnt been taking
care of my own life. I felt like I was just wast-
ing time.... When I look back, I did take part
in many good pieces and was beloved by fans,
but when I left work and faced my daily life, I
felt lonely. I try to control myself so that I dont
fall into those thoughts now.
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU AND YOUR
SOON-TO-BE-BRIDE, LEE BO-YOUNG, WERE
CAST IN THE SAME DRAMA? I frankly want
it to happen. I would very much appreciate it
if the audience enjoyed it, too. However, if it
all became too much and hung around for a
long period of time, I think I would feel a bit
uncomfortable with the attention. Once the
public recognizes us as a couple, I may feel like
we have to look perfect all the time. After the
news broke out about our dating, we just hung
out in a casual way. (Laughs.) I think the work-
place and the home need to be distinguished.
At home, we should be ourselves, and when we
are at work, we should focus on that. However,
I do think that the two of us could pull up a
shows viewer rate to 50 percent if we were in
it together. (Laughs.) Maybe thats just a big
hope on my part.

PLOT
.
HOW ARE YOU GETTING ALONG WITH JI
SUNG AND BAE SOO-BIN? Both of them
are great guys. Personally speaking, because
Ji Sung is so good-looking, I sort of lose my
condence sitting next to him, which is why I
feel more comfortable being next to Soo-bin.
(Laughs.) I have pretty distinctive facial fea-
tures, so I like Soo-bins appearance in com-
parison. I was really glad to hear that I was go-
ing to act with him. With Ji Sung, I was in a TV
commercial with him before, so I already knew
him and felt that things would go well.
DO YOU HAVE A PERSON WHOM YOU
WOULD CALL YOUR MENTOR IN ACTING?
Everybody. (Laughs) Honestly, every single
person has good and bad characteristics. I
think there is something to learn from every-
one. Thinking I dont want to become like
that is learning something, in a sense. I have
thought about wanting to become more like ac-
tresses Yoon Yeo-jeong and Lee Soon-jae, but I
dont really have a set mentor. Oh, I especially
admire Jeon Do-yeon. She is so sexy and has a
unique charm all her own.
We spent time listening to the details of the
drama from Hwang Jung-eum before the rst
broadcast. When we arrived at the set, Hwang
Jung-eum was preparing for a scene in which
she had to deliver a baby in a jail cell. Despite
acting out and feeling great mental anguish as
Kang Yoo-jung (her role in the drama), Hwang
Jung-eum stepped out of her role to answer our
questions in a very light and engaging manner.
WHAT IS YOUR REASON BEHIND SELECT-
ING SECRET LOVE? As soon as I had read the
rst and second part of the script, my reaction
was I am so in! I remember telling my manag-
er, Uh, I have to be in this. I do think that the
title seems too common, though. (Laughs.)
HOW ARE YOU GETTING ALONG WITH THE
DIRECTOR? The director is a very nice per-
son. I used to be busy memorizing my lines,
and thought that saying my lines without mak-
ing a mistake was just about all there was to
acting. However, I soon realized that acting
was really about my emotions and how much
I immersed myself into a situation. I think Im
growing a bit set in my ways, but the director
lets me do what I feel comfortable with, which
allows my acting to become more natural.
WHAT SHOULD THE AUDIENCE FOCUS ON
IN SECRET LOVE? People always yearn for
new things. Secret Love is actually less outra-
geous melodrama and closer to reality, so that
gets the audience to sympathize with the story.
In the beginning, Yoo-jung and Do-hoon are to-
gether and Min-hyuk and Se-yeon are together,
but later Yoo-jung and Min-hyuk get together
and Do-hoon and Se-yeon get together. The
process of changing partners is a tension-lled
one.

Koran movies are hitting consecutive home

Historical Film Evolution,
Director Han Jae-rims The Face Reader
DIRECTING, CROSSING OVER
GENRES FREELY
The movie The Face Reader opened on Septem-
ber 13th and exceeded 7 million won in ticket
sales in its opening 2 weeks, which included
the Chuseok holidays. It is expected to exceed
100 thousand won in sales by the last week of
October. The movies run coincidently overlaps
with the golden Korean holidays, October 3rd,
4th, and 5th and October 9th, 10th, and 11th.
This, in the industry, is called a guaranteed
success.
Director Han Jae-rim: I didnt realize this un-
til the movie was up in theaters, but after its
release, I knew that it could not have succeed-
ed without its star actors. Song Kang-ho is in
his prime and his proven talent pulled in loyal
fans to theaters. Lee Jung-jae has been in the
spotlight for New World recently. Kim Hye-soo
is the woman that all other women want to be
because of The Queen of Ofce, and Jo Jung-
sook and Lee Jong-sook are extremely popular
among female fans. I realized how powerful the
popularity of the cast was once again.
Although Director Han is giving all of the cred-
it to his cast, the popularity of the movie was
mostly due to his dedication to the craft. Han,
who directed 2005 romantic comedy Rules of
Dating and 2007s noir The Show Must Go On,
has put this latest sensation into theaters after
6 years of only historical lms.
Through The Face Reader, Han has succeeded
in proving his ability to freely cross over mov-
ie genres. Moreover, this piece was Hans rst
time to write a screenplay of his own.
Han Jae-rim: When I rst heard about
face-reading, I worried about how to do a
movie about a person who reads other peo-
ples faces. However, when I looked into it, I
saw that the face reader character was part
of the bigger subject that touched into areas
like history, politics, and society. I especially
liked that, and I immediately said that I would
direct the movie. A lot of the frame was shifted
compared to the beginning, however. At rst,
it was about the main character Nae-gyeong
retaliating against Kim Jong-seo because Kim
Jong-seo had branded Nae-gyeongs family as
traitors. I just thought that the story was too
narrow. Rather than a personal retaliation, I
thought itd be far more interesting if it were a
more general story, more like a mass revenge
against history. I wanted to portray a cathar-
sis-like feeling in the movie, perhaps.
THE BEAUTY OF DEFEAT
What is the beauty of defeat? To understand
Han Jae-rims words, it is necessary to look
at the background for the movie. The Face
Reader deals with the political turmoil of 1453
during the so-called Gyeyu Jeongran. This was
the period when young Danjong was to come
into power after the death of King Munjong,
the sickly 5th king of Joseon. At that time, the
Joseon dynasty was on the brink of a bloody
power struggle among kin.
Suyang Daegun (Lee Jung-jae), King Munjongs
younger brother, wanted the throne for him-
self. Prime Minister Kim Jong-seo (Baek Yoon-
sik), who had served the previous king and
held great political inuence, prepared to ght
a bloody battle with Suyang Daegun under the
guise of protecting Danjong.
At the center of all this turmoil is where the
story of protagonist Kim Nae-gyeong (Song
Kang-ho) and his convoluted life takes place.
Nae-gyeong, who had been forced to live in the
countryside after being branded as the son of a

traitor, comes to Hanyang with a face reader,
Yeon-hong (Kim Hye-soo), and his brother-in-
law (Cho Jung-seok).
Nae-gyeong possesses the power of identify-
ing a killer from just one look, even a passing
glance, and this comes to the attention of Prime
Minister Kim Jong-seo. When ordered by King
Munjong to pick out those who are destined
to rebel, Kim Jong-seo tries to use Nae-gyeong
and his face-reading power to nd an excuse to
strike down Suyang Daegun. Meanwhile, Suy-
ang Daegun tries to remove Nae-gyeong from
the picture and gain the throne. Nae-gyeong
gets sucked deeper and deeper into turmoil.
Han Jae-rim: In history, it ends with the vic-
tory of Suyang Daegun, who becomes King
Sejo. But was that really winning? If you look at
history with open eyes, you will realize that ev-
eryone at the center of the ghting was, in the
end, a loser. Even as king, Sejo ultimately fails
to establish a country ruled by a strong central
government. History may appear as though the
victor is the one writing it, but so many facets
are actually formed by the losers of the story. I
think that is the beauty of defeat.
In the latter half of the movie, after the political
turmoil has settled down, Nae-gyeong says the
following to Han Myeong-hoe (Kim Ui-sung), a
key gure on Suyang Daeguns side:
All I did was see the wave when what I should
have seen was the movement of the wind,
which moves the waves. I wasnt able to see
that ow.
The Face Reader is more than a story about a
fortune-teller; it is a piece that attempts to ex-
amine the movement of history.
A QUINTESSENTIALLY KOREAN SUBJECT
COMMUNICATED TO THE WORLD
Is the movie dealing with a subject that is too
Korean? Will it be understood in Japan or Chi-
na, or even the English-speaking countries?
Perhaps this is not something to be worried
about. To a foreign audience, The Face Reader
may just give off a similar sentiment to watch-
ing a Shakespearean play. Even though the
movie deals with something that happened
over 500 years ago in Korean history, it is a
story that can be understood and related to by
anyone by comparing it to the political and so-
cietal reality that he or she now lives in.
This is why the movie may be considered a tru-
ly global lm. It speaks to the world through a
solidly Korean theme. If the movie were to go
global, it could become a major success.
Another great aspect of the movie is its artistic
beauty, most apparent in the theatrical props
and the costumes. Foreign moviegoers would
get a taste of this perfect beauty from Korea
by watching. The Face Reader really is a mas-
terpiece and shows the evolution of Korean
historical lm.
The appearance of Prince Suyang (Lee Jung-
jae) is exceptionally strong. Director Han pur-
posely delayed his appearance on screen in or-
der to maximize his image. About an hour into
the movie, Prince Suyang rst appears before
Nae-gyeong and completely changes his image
of a unique leader.
Han Jae-rim: I thought a lot about this part.
I judged that the way and in what light Prince
Suyang is introduced would be critical in de-
ciding how the movie would get received.
His clothing, the scar on his face, the way he
walksall of that was shot in slow motion. I
tried to make each and every cut as detailed as
possible, like it were cut by a ne-toothed saw.
It seems that the audience members really ap-
preciated all of that effort since they talk about
that scene a lot.
Moviegoers can see how much effort was put
into the movie straight away. In that respect,
The Face Reader is a movie that the director
should be proud of. Among the lms released
in the second half of this year, The Face Reader
is the one that will most likely be remembered
for a long time. It is the movie that has to be
seen to be believed.
The Face Reader melds the broader
themes of history, politics, and society
under a face readers life story.
,
<>.
Director Han Jae-rim can now boast of
a full-developed ability to cross over
into different movie genres.

Hold Up
...
Bora Is
Stopping
For an
Interview!
I could not resist smiling as I watched her walk quietly into the
studio. This was because one of her skits from Gag Concert,
Bboom Entertainment, crossed my mind. That she could
look so calm and yet turn at a moments notice into the co-
median acting out an over-inated celebrity ego when up on
stage was simply hilarious.
Bora was disarmingly charming during the shoot. Without
being prompted to do so, she actively posed in front of the
camera to lighten up the mood in the studio that day. I started
off the interview with a compliment about her photo shoot.
Compliments are always a driving force of energy for me.
Photo shoots used to be the most exhausting thing ever for
me as the youngest person in the group. I wont say I feared
taking pictures, but I denitely did not enjoy it. It really feels
nice to be complimented during an entire photo shoot.
ON HER GROWTH Four years have already own by since
my debut. When I was just starting out, I had to slowly lose
my fear of or shyness towards strangers. I found it extremely
difcult to talk to a stranger. I remember becoming so ner-
vous that Id have many sleepless nights before interviews. As
the years have passed, Ive met more people work-wise and
have gotten pretty relaxed. If I were to evaluate myself from
today and then, I would say growing out of my shyness around
strangers is my biggest achievement.
ON HER BBOOM ENTERTAINMENT ROLE What is the
main theme, you ask? I made it up with Kim Dae-sung. It all
started with his question, How about playing the role of a
really cocky top star? I often receive questions about wheth-
er we are constructing our material centered on one specic
celebrity. However, our program isnt based on a particular
person. Its mostly what we imagine about an imaginary ce-
lebrity.
ON HER WORK ETHICS When it comes to work, Ill do any-
thing. I dont mind black ink or our pouring on me on stage.
Sundays at 9 p.m. is when the entire na-
tion laughs at the same time as this is
when Gag Concert airs on TV. Late one
night, we met with top comedian Shin
Bora, who has a very active part in the
Gag Concert crew.

However, I do have one rule: I need to make people laugh.
Its not always funny to look stupid on stage. If there is no
connection or logic behind looking the joke, the audience
will simply turn away. I constantly think about how to make
people laugh by looking stupid. I guess Im blessed to be a
fearless comedian.
ON HER WORK IN GENERAL There is normally a support-
ing role and a main role in a conte (sketch or vignette). The
supporting role prepares the underlying humor, and the main
role elicits laughs from the audience. I usually play the main
role, but I think the supporting role is more signicant. With-
out the support, a main character could not exist. I want to
become the best in both roles, but it looks like I have a long
ways to go.
ON HER PHILOSOPHY ABOUT HUMOR I probably have
a ways to go before I can really talk about the philosophy
behind humor. However, there is this one thing. I became a
comedian to feel happy. But the secret was that when I work,
not only do I become happy, but my colleagues and the audi-
ence members feel happy, too. Thats one of the things I can
really enjoy as a comedian.
UPON RECEIVING THE KBS BROADCASTING COMEDIAN
AWARD The KBS Broadcasting Comedian Award! I am more
than thankful to KBS for giving me this generous award. Hon-
estly, I do feel nervous after receiving such an honor. All I
can say is that this award will not become a dead weight on
my career, but will become the motivation for me to continue
providing quality entertainment.
ON HER POPULARITY ONLINE Once every day, Ill search
for my name on a portal site. I dont have a specic purpose
for doing this. And I am eager to talk to my biggest fans. Its
good because the Internet works as a monitoring process.
ON HAVING ONLY 4 DAYS LEFT TO SEE THE WORLD If I
only had 4 days? Thats something Id need to think about for
awhile. But I think I would watch Gag Concert rst. Id want
to see my colleagues and myself in itthat one person, too.
Then Id want to see some beautiful scenery and spend time
outdoors with the blue sky and green grasses around me. Id
want to see my family at the very end.
ON HER FUTURE PLANS I dont really have any. I didnt plan
to become a comedian in the rst place. In the end, I think
that I just want to be me, Shin Bora. Attractive and charming
Bora. I want to be a person absolutely full of charm and wit. I
hope that happens when I get old.
I dont have a specic gag that Im condent with.
There are many ways to express a joke, but I feel
most comfortable when a conte is used.
Im afraid of many things, so Im always very
careful. I stay very quiet at home, but I express all
of my energy up on stage.

Located in South Gyeongsang province, the
city of Changwon is where the K-POP World
Festival takes place annually. Changwon is city
of charming little surprises. It is eco-friend-
ly, home to the famous tourist destinations
of Woopo Swamp and Junam Reservoir, and
proactive about being a green city, so pub-
lic bikes are actively used there. Changwon is
also a cultural magnet where various festivals
and international events are held. Behind the
scenes of all this growth in Changwon has
been the citys mayor, Park Wan-soo.
The K-POP World Festival marks its 3rd
annual event this year. It seems that
the festival has jumped up in popularity
despite its relatively short run.
Ten countries participated in the rst festival.
However, this year, there are 50. The growth
we have seen in such a short amount of time is
quite amazing. I want to thank each and every
person who has visited the festival. It would
have been hard without the immense amount
of help and support from KBS, too.
At this point, other local governments are
yearning to host K-POP festivals just like
Changwon City. This would not have been
the case three years ago.
In 2010, when Changwon was integrated into
Changwon City, the citizens needed a festival
that could bring them together in harmony. At
that time, K-POP was very popular and Chang-
won campaigned hard to host a K-POP event.
In the beginning, not many cities were interest-
ed in doing so, but today, a number of cities are
looking for opportunities to host an event. In
our position, we want to continue hosting the
festival in Changwon, and we hope that Chang-
won emerges as a mecca for K-POP.
You must feel proud when you see K-POP
fans from all over the world pouring into
your city.
Indeed. It really feels great. Changwon is
considered a large-sized city, but it had nev-
er hosted any international festivals before.
The K-POP World Festival is a global event and
its nalists are the winners of the preliminary
rounds held in numerous countries. The citi-
zens of Changwon feel that hosting the event
is an opportunity to up the value of the city,
and they are very proud of it.
I heard that the quality of the K-POP World
Festival goes up every year.
Yes. I had a chance to visit Uzbekistan, one
of the participating countries where prelimi-
nary rounds were held. I heard that there was
a preliminary round for the actual preliminary
round for the event. The enthusiasm there was
just overwhelming. The quality of the partici-
pating teams was incomparable to last years
competition. Once I saw that, I was determined
to make sure that the K-POP World Festival be-
comes Koreas most popular festival.
What other things are there to see
in Changwon besides K-POP?
Changwon is a public biking city. It was the
rst city ever to implement this type of public
bike system. The system utilizes an electronic
operation system synced with KT, which we are
reviewing now to see how it might be exported
overseas.
There have actually been many attempts
to implement public bike systems in many
cities, but there arent many successful
cases. What do you think is factor behind
Changwons success?
First of all, there needs to be a good infra-
structure to ride bikes. Bike roads, stands,
and different insurance policies are necessary
for a city biking infrastructure. Changwon is a
planned city, which worked out as a plus for
us since we could build good bike roads. We
worked very hard to solve bike storage and
transport issues as well.
What is Changwon Citys future?
Changwon is a city full of potential. According
to research data reported by the Ministry of
Trade, Industry, and Energy, Changwon was se-
lected as the top city for a number of industry
growth and company investment categories.
We are planning on developing Changwon as
the main hub for South Gyeonsang province by
further improving in cultural and environmen-
tal areas in step with the industrial growth of
the city.

The Second Opening of Quiz On Korea
year. The number of questions about Korean
culture aimed at being unfamiliar to foreigners
increased as well. The nal contestants came
to Korea for 9 days and 8 nights, during Au-

and Gyeongju and POSCO to experience more
of Korea. The nal round was held in the KBS
Hall on August 31st, which aired on September
19th through KBS 1TV and KBS WORLD chan-
nels in 88 different countries.
CONTESTANTS FROM 30 DIFFERENT
COUNTRIES & MORE THAN 1,000 IN
ATTENDANCE
Approximately 1,000 people, from ambassa-
dors hailing from countries outside of Korea to
participant supporters and study abroad stu-
dents, attended the nal round of Quiz On Ko-
rea this year. Announcer Ga Ae-ran, comedian
Lee Hwee-jae, and singer Jae-kyung from the
group Rainbow Joint emceed the event.
The competition consisted of three rounds.
The winners from each round competed
against one another in the nal round to win
the Hallyu quiz king/queen title. The winner
of the rst round was Oliver from South Africa
who was the one person to guess the meaning
of podaegi (baby blanket). The second round
winner was Gabriel from Paraguay, who was
the youngest contestant of this years event.
Gabriel danced around to celebrate his 2nd
round win. The third round was conquered
by a man named Michael from New Zealand
who guessed the right answer to a hard level
question that asked what materials are used to
make hanji (traditional Korean paper).
During the intermission breaks, singers Cray-
on Pop, B.A.P., KARA, and other popular K-POP
groups performed to celebrate the event.
The nal round questions became even more
difcult in level. The format changed from
multiple choice to short answer questions. As
the hall lled with tension and heat, the nal
question of the day was given: This person
is known as one of the most renowned Con-
fucian scholars of Korea. Dosan Sewon was
established in memory of him. Who is this man
that appears on the 1,000 won note? This was
a rather difcult question for foreigners. It was
Michael from New Zealands chance to answer
the question. Emcee Lee Hwee-jae approached
Michael and asked for his answer. Toegye, he
replied. You need to say the ofcial name!
ordered Lee Hwee-jae. Yi Hwang, Michael
answered. He was correct!
At that moment, the winner of a 3-hour-long
quiz show and a brand new car (worth 260
thousand won) was clear to see. Michael
danced New Zealands traditional Haka dance
to express his joy.
WHAT QUIZ ON KOREA IS ALL ABOUT
Quiz On Korea is a global quiz show co-hosted
by the Foreign Ministry and KBS. Its purpose
is to promote an understanding of Korean cul-
ture for Hallyu fans all over the world. This year
marks the second opening of the quiz event.
Preliminary rounds were held in diplomatic
ofces overseas, and chosen participants did
not hesitate to travel the long distance to Ko-
rea from their home countries. The winner of
last years initial event, a student from Uzbeki-
stan, later emerged as the overall winner of the
quiz show and enjoyed popularity in her home
country afterwards.
With the inclusion of 6 additional countries, 30
contestants from 30 countries participated in

Michael, who is more interested in the Korean language
than the Korean culture, generally likes learning foreign

ing. I mean, it was just a preliminary round. I
was absolutely overwhelmed by the popularity
of Hallyu just then.
As an ambassador, what kind of future do
you see for Hallyu? Peoples tastes are sen-
sitive to change. Likewise, Hallyu should mea-
sure itself against external changes in trends.
As of today, Hallyu has spread through embas-
sies and cultural centers around the world, but
I believe this does not have enough sustainabil-
ity yet. For Hallyu to maintain its popularity, an
environment should be formed for Hallyu fans
to make and execute their own Hallyu-based
programs. This will need government and gen-
eral public support.

There was someone working behind the
scenes for Quiz On Korea who was integral
in making it the global Hallyu quiz show it
has become, allowing it to nish its second
run with marked success. Ambassador Ma
Young-sam is the hidden hero.
How did you come up with the idea for Quiz
On Korea? A few years ago, I heard that the
Korean Embassy in Israel was holding a Hal-
lyu quiz game aimed at Israeli fans. I saw with
my own eyes just how successful this kind of
game could be. As soon as I witnessed this, I
thought, Why not do it on a grander scale?
so I talked with KBS and thats how it all came
about.
What were some problems that Quiz On Ko-
rea faced as it held its 2nd run? Well, we
were worried, mainly because we werent sure
whether other countries would actively partici-
pate in the event again. We also worried about
technical difculties and the ability gap to be
found among the countries contestants. In the
end, these problems were solved through KBS
professionals. The rst Quiz On Korea used a
common phrase, Daebak (Jackpot), so we de-
cided to develop this further and make it grow.
What things about the show are open for
improvement? Last years Quiz On Korea was
aired a number of times through KBS WORLD.
Because of that, more countries asked to par-
ticipate this year, but we couldnt meet all of
the demand. We had budget issues, too. So
Creator of Quiz On Korea and Ambassador of Public Diplomacy, Ma Young-sam.

WORLD MEDIA
An era of
bi-directional communication
2013 Global News Forum in Seoul
The 2013 Global News Forum took place at the 63 Buildings Convention Center in Yeoido
on September 5th. This event was attended by some 200 media professionals who dis-
cussed currents trends and the role of media and journalism in the future.
9 5, 63 2013 . 200
, .
CHANGES NEEDED FOR A MEDIA 3.0
GENERATION
The 2013 Global News Forum commenced with
Breaking the News in a Media 3.0 Era. Media
3.0 refers to the bi-directional communication
happening among viewers after the emergence
of recent technology like smart TVs and the
popularization of online social media channels
like YouTube. After an opening message from
KBSs CEO, Gil Hwan-young, the Director of
News Content at BBC Global News, Richard
Porter, gave the keynote speech that was fol-
lowed by a debate with national broadcasting
outlets from around the world, such as CNN,
NHK, Russia Today, Al Jazeera, and Euro Vision.
The managerial staff for online media outlets
such as Google, YouTube, and Twitter took part
in the debate as well.
The debate focused on how the present glob-
al media is adapting to the radical changes in
news publication and distribution and in con-
sumer patterns due to the drastic growth of
the Internet and mobile phone usage. It also
weighed in on the increasing inuence of so-
cial media and what strategies and future pre-
dictions are to be considered.
EMPHASIS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF
KBSS PUBLIC BROADCASTING ROLE
The program for the forum was divided into 3
sessions: Media 3.0 and Global Journalism,
Asia-Pacic Embraces the World, and Be-
yond the Digital Revolution. Min Kyung-wook,
the anchor for KBS 9 News, and Kim Jeong-
su, Chief Channel & Content Manager at KBS
WORLD, took part in a discussion panel and
emphasized the signicance of KBSs role as a
public broadcasting corporation in the journal-
ism industry. In addition, an e-program book
for the attendees to browse through shared
information directly relevant to the session
topics. The entire forum was broadcast live
through streaming VOD, and a Q&A session
was conducted through Twitter. The days pro-
gram gave an in-depth overview of how the ex-
isting news and media outlets should change
to succeed in this new media era.

Additionally, over 200 world media ofcials
were gathered at this years event. What
did they stand to learn from this years
program?
Not only did traditional news outlets like CNN
and NHK join the forum, but new media inter-
ests like YouTube and Twitter also participated.
That in itself is meaningful.
It isnt possible for every news outlet to have
a reporter at the scene and transmitting live.
Nowadays, anyone can make news through
SNS as well; therefore, cooperation between
the outlets is a must. As such, KBS is already
working on cooperating with YouTube, Twitter,
Facebook, and KakaoTalk. This forum was a
chance for us to demonstrate this fact.
How is online social media changing the
existing media world? Please give an
example specically related to KBS.
SNS has become a marketing and promo-
tional tool for KBS and is a tool for spreading
knowledge of Korean culture. Through SNS,
ideas or trends that are currently in viewer de-
mand can be applied to KBS programs in real
time. Through real-time feedback from view-
ers, KBS can achieve optimized results! KBS is
not only leading the way for existing traditional
mediait is showing that KBS is walking in time
with Media 3.0 changes.
This past July, KBS WORLD celebrated
its 10th anniversary. In what ways do
you see KBS moving forward in the next
10 years?
I believe it needs to refrain from being a one-
way broadcasting solution and model itself to
be more of a participation ground where view-
ers and producers of Hallyu programs interact
through Korean TV dramas and K-POP music.
The next 10 years should focus on Hallyus sus-
tainable future. In order to achieve that, well
need at least two more channels just for the
230 million viewers we have worldwide and
the 7 million viewers we have who are over-
seas Koreans. Better organizational strategies
should be developed and implemented as well.
KBS WORLDs next 10 years should focus on
how to work with the coming changes in pro-
gram production and organization and how to
best utilize SNS feedback.

Moon Chae-wons Natural Pink Make-up
In her current drama, Good Doctor, Moon Chae-
won plays the role of a doctor completing her fel-
lowship. For this, a minimally beautiful look is key.
The secret to her seemingly natural pink lips is to
match the tone of the lip tint to the lipstick. When
used alone, a lipstick can look too heavy on the
lips, and overly applying a lip tint can make the
lips appear swollen.

You and your loved ones 100-day anniversary
is coming up, so its time to nd a heart-thumping
gift! If you have snooped around cosmetics stores
to check out what fresh, nice scents they have
available or actually gone to a perfume store to
buy a delicious scent for your loved one, listen up:
Youd better double-check to see whether or not
that wonderful fragrance was made from synthet-
ic ingredients, which are more harmful than you
might think.
Perfumes can be differentiated into two catego-
ries: 1) Synthetic fragrances made from petro-
leum and 2) Natural fragrances made from natu-
ral plant extracts. Most perfumes, make-up, fabric
softeners, and even packaged food are scented
with synthetic fragrances made from petroleum.
In other words, something that is lemon-scented
likely does not contain any real lemon and that
rose-scented shampoo you use has never had
anything to do with real roses. In synthetic fra-
grances, a component called phthalate works as
an endocrine disrupter on the hormone-secretion
glands of the body and studies show that this
has a negative effect on the human liver, kidney,
heart, lungs, and other major organs.
On the other hand, natural fragrances are made
by collecting and rening the plant extracts from
fruit, leaves, owers, stems, and/or roots through
distillation. For example, a single milliliter of Bul-
garian rose oil is extracted from 3,000 roses.
There is a world of difference between an articial
and rose-less rose fragrance and a natural per-
fume made from real roses. This difference lies
not only in their ingredients, but how each affects
the human skin and body.
Dont you want to protect those you love by stay-
ing away from the synthetic fragrances that are so
prevalent in the world?
Try to select cosmetics labeled as being made
from natural extracts or natural essential oils
and to look for items without any articial avors,
fragrances, or perfumes added.

Hangeul is the only language script in the
world with clearly known origins. It was
created 570 years ago under the leader-
ship of King Sejong the Great. Hangeuls
functionality and excellence have been
proven yet again in modern times as the
ideal script for computer and mobile plat-
forms.

A TIME WITHOUT A COMMON SCRIPT
Once upon a time there was an illiterate cou-
ple. The husband was going to the market and
the wife asked for a comb and by using char-
coal to draw a comb-tooth pattern on his arm.
The husband spent a busy day at the market
meeting friends and buying supplies. As he
went about his business, he saw the drawing
on his arm and thought, Im supposed to buy
something? He couldnt quite remember
what she had asked him to buy, so he just
bought an item that resembled the drawing
and took it home. The wifes reaction: I ask for
a comb, and he brings home a broom.
This is an anecdote that highlights the impor-
tance of written language. There was a time
in the past when the vast majority of Koreans
did not have command of the written word. Al-
though Chinese characters were in use, they
were used only among the educated few, while
the common people had little access to edu-
cation and were unable to learn how to read
and write.
Such were the circumstances, at least until the
Joseon era when Hangeul was created. As they
were illiterate, commoners were unable to take
their grievances to the authorities when neces-
sary or to make simple records about the most

commonplace things, like farming.
There were cases of such illiterate circum-
stances leading to very unfortunate conse-
quences. During the 10th year of Joseons
fourth king, Sejong the Great (life 1397-1450,
reign 1418-1450), a man named Kim Hwa from
Jinju murdered his own father. Shocked by the
event, the king ordered the distribution of a
book among the people, which depicted the
stories of virtuous children and civil servants.
The book contained illustrations, but it was
difcult to spread its teachings to the masses
since they could not read.
SEJONG AND THE JIPHYEONJEON
SCHOLARS: AN 18-YEAR LONG ENDEAVOR
Realizing the need for a literacy system that
was accessible to everyone, Sejong began de-
veloping a new set of letters with the scholars
of Jiphyeonjeon, a royal academic organization.
Sejong, who was a scientist and a scholar of
language and literature, and these Jiphyeon-
jeon scholars were engaged in their research
for 18 years. Finally, during his 28th year of
reign (1446), on September 10th by the lunar
calendar, Sejong declared the completion of
Hunminjeongeum, the new system that con-
tained 28 symbols for the consonants and
vowels of the Korean language and their pro-
nunciation. The term Hunminjeongeum means
sounds for the instruction of the people.
In order to facilitate the introduction of Han-
geul, Sejong published Samgangsilhaengdo (
), a treatise about the rightful du-
ties of man andSeokbosangjeol (),
a treatise on the teachings of Buddhism, along
with medical and agricultural texts. Among the
general populace, Heo Gyun wrote the earliest
novel in Hangeul,Hong Gildong-jeon (
).
Hangeul is very rare in that it is the only script
in the world whose creator, date of introduc-
tion, and method of creation is clearly known.
National Treasure No. 70,Hunminjeongeum
Haerye, is an introductory book published
at the time of Hangeuls initial release and is
registered within UNESCOs Memory of the
World.
Hangeuls widespread distribution was held
back until the 19th century due to the ruling
classs preference for Chinese characters.
However, its use gradually expanded among
the commoners and women, with help from
the scholars.
The name Hangeul stems from the term
Hangeul-mo that was rst used in 1913 by
the National Language Research Institute, cre-
ated under the leadership of Ju Si-gyeong. The
Han in Hangeul means whole or big.
At rst, Hangeul consisted of 28 total charac-
ters, but four have since fell out of use. Han-
geuls current system consists of 14 conso-
nants and 10 vowels. In Korea, October 10th
of the Gregorian calendar is celebrated as
Hangeul Day, the day Hangeul was introduced.

Drama Tree with deep roots. .
Unlike in English, the subject is often omitted in Hangeul,
and the use of compound adjectives is prevalent. As such,
metaphorical expressions are quite common and unlike the
blunt expressions found in many songs.
Lets take a look at the lyrics in Lee So-ras Wind Is Blowing.
The lyrics are bursting with the emotions of a woman who
has lost the love of her life.
The wind is blowing, blowing an empty scene into my
saddened heart / Love is a tragedy and you are not me.
Memories are being set down separately.
There was a time when Hangeul was considered ill-suited to
rap or dance music. However, during the 1990s, Seo Taiji
and Boys rose as the cultural president with their numer-
ous rap songs. In addition, PSY has proven to be a huge suc-
cess on the world stage with his Hangeul lyrics in Gangnam
Style and Gentleman.
Seo Taiji, PSY, and recent K-POP artists use the charac-
teristics of Hangeul to their advantage. In addition to the
numerous adjectives used in sentences, diverse endings
can be added to Hangeul words. This characteristic can
prove quite useful in rhyming and in creating a rhythm.

molla oae mal-ggeum-hae-ya / Ah-ri-gga-ri-ha-myeon
gga-ri-hae / Yong-gi, pae-gi, ddol-ki. PSY in Gentleman
Take a look at the underlined parts. The intentional use of
words for their pronunciation, rhyme, and rhythm stand out
in these parts. The lines Sa-jin-ee itda eopdameo-ri-ka-
rak-ee itda eopda / Soom-eul shuil-soo-ga eopseomeo-
mul-su-do eopseo from SISTAR 19s Gone Not Around Any
Longer is another example of successful rhyme in Hangeul.
Hangeul is now growing to be the perfect language for
K-POP.

Hangeul must be unquestionably ranked as

HANGEUL IS AN OPTIMAL FIT FOR
COMPUTERS!
Another surprising aspect of Hangeul is its
compatibility with the computers and mobile
phones of todays day and age. Hangeul is ex-
pressed using 26 keys24 basic vowels and
two double vowels. The consonants are on the
left side of the keyboard, and the vowels are
placed on the right. This layout allows the us-
ers hands to type quickly in an almost rhyth-
mical manner. Hangeul was created 570 years
ago and is now being used in an optimal man-
ner within todays information society.
Although the English language has a similar
number of keys, hand movements while typing
are often discordant. When typing the word
Olympic in English, the hands have to move
in a right-right-right-right-right-right-left se-
quence. The same word in Korean, however,
follows the sequence left-right-left, left-right-
left, left-right-left.
The Japanese language is typed out either
by using a keyboard that contain all 50 basic
sounds or by typing the Japanese words as
they sound in English and selecting the correct
characters.
Since there are so many characters in the Chi-
nese language, the effort to condense all of
these characters into a single keyboard was
never made. Instead, the sounds of Chinese
words must be typed in English rst, while
pulls up a list of corresponding Chinese char-
acters. As there are many characters that have
the same sound, the person typing must then
go through the step of selecting the right char-
acter from the list. As such, typing speed is
greatly reduced.
Mobile devices, with their limited number of
keys, highlight the advantages of Hangeul even
more. Although the QWERTY keyboard is also
in use, the Cheonjiin keyboard was developed
especially for Hangeul and uses only 10 keys
to express every Korean letter. The consonants
can be typed out using seven keyseach rep-
resenting two different lettersand the vowels
take up only three keys. This is an incredible
convenience possible only with Hangeul.

- <Fashion is Passion> .
Designer Lee Sang-bongs rst opportunity to
graft Hangeul onto fashion items goes back
to 7 years ago in 2006. While he was thinking
about the theme for his pieces to compete at
some fashion contest, he thought of the idea of
applying Hangeul. Then, in that same year, he
showed off his rst designs printed with Han-
geul at a fashion show celebrating 120 years of
Korea-France diplomatic relations.
His fashion designs did not receive immediate
attention from the audience. Compared to the
passionate response overseas, it was given a
frosty reception in Korea. His warehouse was
lled with Hangeul clothing, damaging the
companys sales.
However, there seemed to be a silver lining af-
ter all. Triggered by the participation of Innity
Challenge at Lee Sang-bongs Hangeul-themed
fashion show, Lees designs started to gain
recognition and popularity. Thanks to Innity
Challenge, Lees designs have made it into the
spotlight.
Designer Lee Sang-bong applied Hangeul to
his fashion pieces and drew inspiration from
shaman performance and primitive Korean
motifs such as the pine tree, traditional hand
embroidery, patchwork quilting, folk paint-
ing, and dancheong (traditional multi-colored
paintwork on wooden buildings) in order to add
an Oriental air to his designs.
At his 2013 Fall Season Collection, Lee un-
veiled a clothing line inspired by traditional Ko-
rean muntin (a strip of wood or metal in a win-
dow pane), which he reinterpreted into a retro
image of the 1960s that expressed a fusion of
beautiful scenes encompassing the past, the
present, and the future.
Lees designs are not just simple patterns;
they embody a storyline. The path and ow of
moving clouds, the light of the moon through a
window pattern, and the reected image of an
elegant Korean woman are all implemented in
his designs.
Lee is preparing a project motivated by
Arirang to show it at the Hangeul Day event
in Cheongju on October 9th. It is supposed
to portray a rhythmic design resembling the
dance moves for Arirang through Hangeul lyr-
ics and musical notes written onto the clothes.
The authenticity of Hallyu can only be portrayed through
Korean hands. Many things inspire my Hangeul fashions:
handwritten letters from the pansori (traditional Korean opera)
master, Jang Sa-ik; hanshik (Korean food), which emphasizes
the tastes coming from a cooks hand; every single hand-stitched
piece of hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), which is
made more carefully than any of the haute couture from Paris;
hanok (traditional Korean houses), which are built by hand and
without the use of nails. These are all a driving
force behind Hallyu culture.

WORLDWIDE INCREASE IN THE NUMBER
OF KOREAN CLASSES
The Korean Wave is stronger than ever as
K-POP music and Korean TV drama continue
to enjoy great popularity. This Hallyu phenom-
enon, which began in the mid-eastern and cen-
tral parts of Asia, has now spread to regions
further away, like Europe and South America.
It does not end there. Young Hallyu (K-POP
and Korean drama) fans have begun to active-
ly learn the Korean language. More and more
fans want to understand more about Korean
culture and the sentiments condensed within
Hallyu.
Ten students from the University of Hong Kong
visited KBS in Korea last year. These visiting
students were all minoring in Korean in their
studies and did not need any additional lan-
guage interpretation. About leaning the Korean
language, they replied:
We learn Korean in order to watch Korean
dramas in their original language. Around 200
freshmen students selected Korean for their
minor, with about 70 of them continuing to
study Korean until their junior year.
These students are dedicated to learning the
Korean language in order to understand Hallyu
better. Perhaps they are the smartest univer-
sity students in Asia. Sure enough, these stu-
dious fans were beyond thrilled to bump into
Joo Won at the shoot site for the drama Bridal
Mask.
There has been a recent increase in Korean
language courses in Korea, very much relat-
ed to this new learning trend. Yonsei Univer-
sity, Keimyung University, Yongin University,
and other Korean universities opened Korean
language courses, which attract more foreign
than Korean students, and the number of Ko-
rean language courses established overseas
drastically increases every day.
Sejonghakdang, a project directed by the Min-
istry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, has es-
tablished 117 Korean language schools in 51
locations around the world. That marks an in-
crease of 430% as compared to the 22 schools
that were available in 2010. The Korean Wave
has incited its fans everywhere to learn the Ko-
rean language.
SHIN KYUNG-SOOK AND KIM YOUNG-HA,
KOREAN WRITERS ON THE RISE
Foreign interest in Korea has spread to Korean
literature as well. Starting from a simple inter-
est in dramas like Winter Sonata and Daejang-
geum, the demand for Korean literature has
been growing ever since the mid 2000s.
Lee Chung-joon, Hwang Suk-young, Park
Kyung-ni, Park Wan-suh, Lee Moon-yeol, and
other famous Korean novelists have had their
works translated and sold in the U.S. and
Europe. More recently, middle-aged authors
like Shin Kyung-sook and Kim Young-ha have
stepped into the limelight with their writing.
Shin Kyung-sooks Please Look After Mom has
been translated into over 40 different lan-
guages and currently ranks among the Top
10 Bestsellers on Amazon. Also coming to the
fore are Kim Young-has Quiz Show and I Have
the Right to Destroy Myself. These two novels
have been translated into multiple languages
to be published in China and several countries
in Europe.
Other writers like Gong Ji-young, Jo Kyung-ran,
Han Kang, Pyun Hye-young are gaining recog-
nition overseas as well, proving that another
boom in Hallyu is to be centered in Korean
literature.
A FOUNDATION FOR HALLYU
KOREAN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
It is very encouraging to see the addition of
Korean literature into Hallyus spotlight, which
started with K-POP and Korean TV dramas. Af-
ter all, a countrys language and literature are
crucial to understanding the countrys culture,
its typical atmosphere, and its peoples emo-
tions.
Music, lm, and literature and all forms of cul-
tural expression and are based in language.
Hangeul will help elucidate K-POP music, Kore-
an drama and lm, and now Korean literature.
Through it, the Korean language has become
the most signicant way to truly understanding
Korean culture and its charms.

Sweet pumpkins, which are yellow on the in-

steaming make them sweeter, but it also soft-

al for healthy eating. Plus, no matter how much
of it you eat, you wont feel bloated, since its
rich in digestion-aiding ber, which is helpful
for dieters, too.

PROLOGUE
So far, our club section has touched upon near-
ly all kinds of clubs. For the last part of the club
tour, were introducing Lounge Club Move
(hereafter Move).
Located in the Itaewon area of the Yongsan
district in Seoul. You hear more English than
Korean spoken at Move. Myeong-dong may
be a popular tourist spot among Asian tourists,
but Itaewon is a popular spot among Western-
ers, making clubs in this area are lled with
more foreigners than Koreans. So lets head
for the open club environment made famous in
the song Itaewon Freedom and see how the
international crowd is doing.
EASY ENJOYMENT
The biggest advantage of lounge clubs is that
all you have to do is sit back and relax, drink
and dance. You dont need any additional VIP
reservations or to order expensive drinksjust
enjoy the open bar or pub atmosphere. If you
cant have fun without drinking, lounge clubs
are the best place to drink, enjoy music and
freely talk with friends.
Move welcomes you to the cleanest and
classiest ambiance out of all of Seouls lounge
clubs. The interior is reminiscent of a castle
and will make you feel like you are at an aris-
tocratic party. The club consists of seven dif-
ferent spaces including the stage and the VIP
zone.
DRINKS AND SNACKS: LIFEBLOOD
OF LOUNGE CLUBS
What breathes life into these lounge clubs are,
of course, drinks and snacks! Young party-go-
ers value the quality of their cocktails, but, you
dont need to worry about that here! Just one
cocktail mixed by these bartenders with more
than a decade of experience will give you new
life. If you dont believe me, go try it yourself!
The snacks are perfect, too. Generally, the va-
riety of snacks at clubs is very limited; but at
Move a professional chef serves up various
delicious snacks for your enjoyment. Its actu-
ally more of a main dish than just a snack.
MOVES MUSIC
Veteran DJs with more than 10 years of experi-
ence are in the line-up at Move. DJs who once
dominated the clubs in Hongdae and Gangnam
mix awesome grooves. Its just too hard to ex-
plain everything with words, but once you lis-
ten to the music there, you cant help dancing
along to the music. Lets get going to Move,
where every day is a party day!

fusion art comedy Hero.

VARIOUS TYPES OF DRAWING,
AND THE FUN
Heros cast really entertains the audience.
Rather than produce just a few drawings, they
create more than 10 different drawings for the
audiences enjoyment during the show.
Some examples of techniques include: light
scratching, which shows the faces of heroes
by sculpting the faces on a black canvas us-
ing light; action painting, which completes
the faces by having four performers dance
and throw paint at four different canvases and
bringing them together afterwards; and, mar-
veling art, which creates shapes and patterns
by the combination and separation of water
and oil.
SYNOPSIS
Heroes such as Bruce Lee, Michael Jackson,
and Superman are all re-created by using 10
different art techniques in Hero. During the
show, which lasts 80 minutes, the audience is
riveted to the stage.
DYNAMIC LIVE DRAWING
Since opening in Myeongbo Art Hall in
Chungmu-ro in October of 2010, Hero has
garnered the praise of viewers from many
countries such as Japan, the USA, China, Hong
Kong, and South East Asia. It is fun, meaning-
ful and original.
As you might guess from its title, the show is
about heroes. Representations of heroes from
around the world such as Bruce Lee and Su-
perman are created on stage. The audience
becomes absorbed by the actor/painters dy-
namic actions and time ies by; the pictures
are drawn seemingly instantly. This show com-
pletely dees the stereotype that paintings are
boring.
MEDIA ART
Another attraction of the show is its use of
media technology in art. Isnt painting just
with brushes boring? This show uses 3D Video
Projection Mapping (a large digital projector)
to capture the walls and other objects for the
audience.

().
Morning of Owls training room. I witnessed
the b-boy teams complicated dance moves in
person. The crew was busy practicing for its
European tour in its half-underground training
room. It was awesome to watch the guys per-
form in real life and for the rst time after only
seeing their performances on video before.
The foreign dance instructor seemed surprised
by their incredible dance skills. It is a pity that
the new routine (Team play at the b-boy bat-
tle) has to be off-the-record.
How should the leader of a dance group that
has conquered the world be described? Morn-
ing of Owls lead Lee Seung-joo agreed to do
an interview with Kwave. Though their story
can only be given in words and pictures, hope-
fully a faithful picture of this leader and his
crew are shown here.
POWERFUL NATION OF B-BOYS: KOREA
Could there be a special dancing gene among
Koreans? Or is it because Koreans are the
people of joy? Korean b-boys have a high rep-
utation in the b-boying world, winning numer-
ous times at global competitions. Is it too ear-
ly to conclude that Korea is a powerful b-boy
nation?
Asia remains strong at b-boy competitions.
We competed against a Japanese team in R16.
I think that the biggest strengths of Korean
teams are wildness in movement and perfor-
mance power. I believe there are absolutely
no rivals to Korea when it comes to those two
things.
Where wisdom begins is Morning of Owls
tagline. As such, Morning of Owl wisely creates
its own choreography for performances. Most
of the choreography (not including individual
routines) is done by Lee Seung-joo. He has re-
tired as an active b-boy, but he is doing his role
as the eldest person in the crewleading and
supporting.
I think it has been about four years since I
stopped b-boying. Right now, I choreograph
the teams dance moves and mainly just sup-
port them in various ways. Most of the dance
moves come from my own ideas, although
sometimes we bring in external help for shows.
I get my inspiration from everything, every-
where. From the movies I watch and the places
I travel and from the songs I listen to, I draw
my best ideas because my mind is always oc-
cupied with dancing.
MASTERS WAITING FOR THE RIGHT
MOMENT
Lee Seung-joo is like some warrior monk from
the mountains. Would he and the master from
a martial arts story share a similar appear-
ance? Probably sohe exudes a calmness that
only a master brimming with qi could maintain.
Its been a long time since our debut, but in-
stead of competing at all of the b-boy battles,
we focused on performing. Beginning this year,
we decided to engage ourselves in competi-
tions. We were called the secluded masters
among the b-boy fans. We werent necessarily
the winning candidates, yet we were the ones
that others were reluctant to meet in battle.
Other teams say that they understand our
pattern up to some point; however, they never
seem to be able to block our moves. Isnt it
about time to take out the secluded from that
nickname? (Laughs.)
Morning of Owls b-boying is open and direct,
yet others cant seem to block or imitate the
groups moves, and the moves themselves are
unique and innovative! Morning of Owls se-
cluded masters nickname is even more vividly
painted than before.
Our motto is to be creative. We always think
about how to show our creativity through per-
formance. We want to deliver a challenging
message to everyone. Its not easy to imitate
us, whether you are from another country or
from Korea. Our moves can only be performed
by us, Morning of Owl.
B-boys are a special type of people. They strive
to discover the utmost limits of what the hu-
man body can doand beyond. While watching
them perform passionately on stage, anyone
will nod at this look into the true nature of
ones dreams.
AT THE TOP
For leaders who boast about their teams, is
their condence and trust all about the team
members? Even a team as strong as Morning
of Owls must feel challenged by others? Once
you made it to the top, there must have been
numerous other teams that were continuously
knocking on your door for a battle.
We dont consider ourselves as the ones at
the top, and we do not have a specic team
we consider our nearest rival. All of the teams
weve encountered are highly skilled, so that
means that we cant and wont stop training.
Major competitions are just like that. The Eu-
ropean competitions are bigger in scale, but
it is harder to win at the Korean competitions.
Think of it like this: were like Olympic athletes
who have to work harder at the nationals.
For master b-boys who are slowly preparing
to soar once again, what do they have as their
next goal? And to where is that goal heading?
We denitely became much busier after the
R16 win. We are preparing for our three-month
long European tour that starts in September.
We were also invited to do a showcase at the
Battle of the Year (worlds biggest scaled
dance competition). We will be the rst Asian
guests ever at the showcase and the rst ever
b-boy group. Our ultimate goal is to do one and
only performances, just like youd see at an ex-
clusive concert, and all of the dance moves will
be uniquely ours. Perhaps we will be ready by
next year. Come and see us again then. Well
be waiting for Kwave!
Members of Morning of Owl give it their all during practice.

A DAY IN THE CHARACTERS LIVES FROM
SECRETLY GREATLY
Comic Book Store for Two Months will fea-
ture pop art from September 13th until No-
vember 12th. Various types of events are to
be held, such as a brand new character exhibit
from Lee Hyang-woo, who was in the limelight
during the early 2000s for his animation Ex-
traterrestrial, and original art showings from
the cartoonist Han Sung-min and pop artist
Shin Myeong-hwan. In addition, real life-sized
chocolate products for the movie Secretly
Greatly (based on the webtoon Secretly Greatly
by HUN) will be available. Secretly Greatly in-
cludes a total of 11 pop art pieces that draws
the most attention from visitors, perhaps due
to the success of the movie.
The CEO of Saram, Itt, Kim Sung-jin; the CEO of
Dream Come Us, Hwang Jae-oh; and the author
of the webtoon Secretly Greatly, HUN, are the
ones who planned this special exhibition:
We wanted to share the art of Korean car-
toons, which is another facet of Hallyu. We
didnt limit ourselves to just displaying the
cartoons and the comic books themselves.
We made the main characters from the com-
ics into unique products and hope to spread
our love of Korean comics in this way. We want
Comic Book Store for Two Months to become
the starting point for a new movement.
During the exhibition, more than 150 kinds of
character-related products from the webtoons
Story of Narms Life, Smile Brush, and Not Alive
will be made available and sold to the public.
Two artists, HUN of Secretly Greatly and Lee
Hyang-woo of Extraterrestrial, will be holding
an autograph signing event for fans during the
exhibit as well.

(CULTURE CRITIC)
areas. In comparison to the other girl groups
yearning to look fabulous, Crayon Pop seemed
pitiably lacking.
However, a bunch of samchon fans (dubbed
as such as most of the fan group consists of
elder men and samchon refers to the Korean
word for uncle) gathered to cheer for Crayon
Pop. The fans of Crayon Pop also showed up
in training wear and enthusiastically followed
the groups performances. This type of invert-
ed popularity (starting from the ground up) has
nally pushed the girl group into stardom.
COULD THEY BECOME THE SECOND PSY?
Billboard USAs online site commented that
Crayon Pop has every possibility of becoming
the second PSY. This is because Crayon Pop
also belongs to the B-list pop music culture,
just like PSY. Unlike the outwardly perfect,
luxurious, and bountiful A-list groups, the
B-list acts seek out and show off a low-quality,
cheap, ludicrous, and/or crude style.
PSY and Crayon Pop fall into the same catego-
ry, yet Crayon Pop becoming the second PSY
will be no easy task. PSY has all of the traits
needed to become a favorite with U.S. fans;
however, Crayon Pop is far from the American
trends and closer to a Japanese style. There-
fore, the groups continued popularity seems
more probable in East Asian countries than in
the United States.
The factors behind PSY and Crayon Pops suc-
cess are musical ability and a completeness
that underlies their music. Crayon Pops dance
moves seem quite playful, but they are based
on a high level of dance training. Even the
groups song wasnt made just to sound fun.
No matter how crude and clownish the B-list
pop music groups may seem, it isnt because
they do not have the ability to make something
seem high class.
The B-list culture was not created because of
incapability. It was made as one of many mu-
sical styles. If Crayon Pop had not put forth a
B-list song, it would not have gained such pop-
ularity. Furthermore, Crayon Pop has succeed-
ed because it chose to be part of the B-list cul-
ture despite having the skills to do otherwise.
BREAKING THE IDOL GROUP STEREOTYPE
It was basically an unwritten law in the Korean
pop industry that all idol groups had to look
cool and fab before Crayon Pop made their
entrance into the industry.
Because idol groups had to become literal idols
to be looked up to by all teenagers, they had
to hide all of their questions deep inside their
hearts.
Crayon Pop, on the other hand, broke the un-
spoken rule. They have proved that girl groups
can display a less-than-lofty public image and
still gain popularity by being fun and passion-
ate about their music.
This phenomenon should be recorded in Ko-
rean idol group history. Numerous girl groups
have failed to portray an interesting, alternative
public image, being trapped in the naive-sexy
mold, and rookie idol groups that have ap-
peared on the scene seem almost identical to
each other. These groups have been facing a
rough time getting better known. The public
has been tiring of the repetition of seeing and
hearing the same thing as well.
Crayon Pop denitely made a breakthrough.
Many already predict that various other girl
groups will soon appear with unique personal-
ities based on Crayon Pops success. It does
seem better for the idol groups to compete
with one another in a different way than to loaf
around in the old cookie-cutter pattern.
RUNNING OPPOSITE TO THE
OTHER GIRL GROUPS
At the time of Crayon Pops arrival, it was a
widely accepted notion that no other rookie girl
group would be able to reach stardom given
the saturated circumstances in the girl group
industry. This surfaced as people began to nd
it difcult to tell apart which group was which
since these groups did not have a particularly
striking style. Many of the girl groups chose a
sexy concept in an attempt to stand out.
Meanwhile, Crayon Pops members went in a
completely opposite direction. Without overly
exposing their bodies or emphasizing their sil-
houettes, they instead dressed up in colorful
training wear. Their dance choreography was
a far cry from the sexy booty shaking found
among their peers and was of a rather playful
bent.
After a while, Crayon Pop started to gain unex-
pected popularity among the rookie girl groups
for simply being distinguishable. The groups
members promoted themselves completely
differently from the other girl groups. They
started off by performing out on the streets.
With portable sound equipment in hand, they
performed in places like Myeong-dong, Dong-
daemun, Hongdae, and other crowded outdoor
Crayon Pop is a refreshing breath of air in the K-POP industry.

A New Model for the Idol World,
Crayon Pop
Crayon Pop has recently been generating a storm in the world of
idol girl groups. YG Entertainments CEO Yang Hyun-suk pointed
to the song Bar-bar-bar as a major example as it is the biggest hit
song during the rst half of this year.

The Unwelcome
Visitor,
Nasal Allergies
In autumn, the daily temperature range
increases, some days up to ten degrees
Celsius. During this season, many who
have nasal allergies (allergic rhinitis) suffer
greatly from an alternately stuffy and run-
ny nose that seems never-ending. However,
there is a way to get rid of this problem and
its burdensome symptoms. Listen upthe
solution is right here.
10 .
,
. ,
.
SIMILAR TO A COLD,
WITH MUCH DISCOMFORT
Nasal allergies can be hard to distinguish from
a cold. Colds are caused by viral infections
and symptoms include headaches and fever.
In most cases, colds go away after one week.
Even though nasal allergies have similar symp-
toms, the fever is not nearly as high as it would
be with a cold and persists for longer than a
week, while symptoms like a runny nose and
sneezing are a constant problem. Though a
common cold and nasal allergies seem very
much alike, nasal allergies are accompanied
by much more discomfort. The likelihood of
a child with an allergic parent inheriting the
same allergic symptoms is said to be 50 per-
cent, and the chances increase to 75 percent
when both parents have them. Congestion near
the nose area can cause dark bluish circles to
form around the eyes, which can be triggered
by nasal allergies.
There are many instances of children who, due
to nasal allergies, experience a lower secretion
of growth hormone due to lack of sleep and
decreased appetite because of a dulled sense
of smell. Nasal allergies are more than just an
inconvenience, even when compared to the
common cold.
TRADITIONAL KOREAN MEDICINE
CURES WITHOUT STRESSING THE BODY
First off, it is best to prevent allergic reactions
by removing dust mites and mold from the
home and to stay away from pets. Use hypoal-
lergenic covers on pillows and mattresses and
make use of a humidier as often as you can.
There is a treatment for nasal allergies in Ko-
rean traditional medicine called Sochungry-
ongtang that is mainly made with schizandra.
Nasal spray made with medicinal herbs is also
quite effective. Moreover, when thin needles
are used on acupuncture points on both sides
of the nose called the yeongyang acupuncture
point, nasal stufness goes away immediately.
In Korean medicine, the nose is connected to
the entire body. Therefore, nasal allergies are
treated with consideration for each and every
function of the body. Patients can feel satis-
ed with the fact that the body is never under
stress while undergoing treatment.
Runny noses can occur, regardless of time and
place, and stuffy noses can sometimes even
become a hurdle to socializing. Nasal allergies
are not easy to ignore. Free yourself from the
limitations of nasal allergies and breathe easy
through traditional Korean medicine. It is slow,
but thorough, factoring in all of the functions
of the body.
,

Amazingly, nasal congestion can be alleviated through
acupuncture on both sides of the nose.

Ho-jeong Yes, I really like it, but I dont eat a lot of it because my mom
worries about me getting fat.
(Sam-jae quietly goes down the stairs and grabs two pieces
of meat and returns to the room.)
Ho-jeong Sang-woo, you must like meat, too?
Sang-woo No, I dont like meat.
Situation (2)
Sung-jae, who has no interest in studying, is talking to his parents,
Ki-bum and Ji-sun.
Ki-bum Sung-jae, do you really hate studying?
Sung-jae Its not that I hate it; its simply because I cant!
This malfunctioning brain of mine is from you two, you know?
Ji-sun (Fidgeting) Didnt I tell you to stop blaming it all on your brain?
Ki-bum If you dislike studying that much, go to the States.
You want to go, just like your brother, right?
Sung-jae (Change in facial expression) Dad, really?
Honestly, can I really go?

HANBOK GLEAMING IN THE
FIJIAN NIGHT
This year during Hibiscus, Fijis biggest festi-
val, hanboks (traditional Korean wear) made an
appearance. Elenani Nasau and Gregory Ravoi
appeared wearing hanboks sponsored by the
Korean Embassy in Fiji on the festivals Asia
Night that was held on August 19th.
I am glad to share the hanbok with the citi-
zens of Fiji, Nasau said.
Meanwhile, Ravoi was selected as the 2013
festival king for his elegant hanbok look.
Asia Night has become a place for cultural
exchange between Korea and Fiji where sam-
ulnori (traditional music featuring four types
of instruments) and taekwondo performances
were held. Korean Embassy in the Republic of Fiji
CHILES K-POP FESTIVAL
PRELIMINARY ROUND
The Korean Embassy in Chile held its 5th An-
nual Chile K-POP Festival on August 17th. Nine
pre-screened vocal teams and 20 performance
teams from southern Chile participated at the
event. Entrance tickets were sold out within
ve minutes after Internet sales began, proving
the popularity of this event. This years event
applied a similar audition program format to
popular Korean TV audition shows, with profes-
sional emcees and judges taking the event to a
more professional level. K-POP fan club mem-
bers spontaneously created a fund to support
participants from low-income brackets. More-
over, Korean companies sponsored the trans-
portation costs of participants who traveled a
long way to the event. The event contributed to
a wider spread of Hallyu in Chile.
