THE HUNGRY WOLF PACK

everything was cold, silent and white. Every time winter came to Northwest Canada the land
became covered with snow and ice. Only strong men and animals could live there.
Two men sat by a fire. There was a dog sled near them.
In the distance they heard a cry. They looked at each other for a momento. Then there was
another cry. It was coming closer.
the wolves are here, Bill,said Henry.
theres very Little food, said Bill, looking at the sled dogs.
When it was dark, the men tied the dogs with a rope to a piece of Wood near the tres. Bill gave
some fish to the dogs and Henry cooked some meat on the fire.
Bill looked at Henry and asked, how many dogs do we have, Henry?
you know we have six, Henry answered.
well, I took six fish out of the bag. I gave one to each dog, but one of the dogs didnt get any
fish, said Bill. So I gave him another one. Then I saw a dog run away across the snow. There
were seven dogs.
It can be difficult to see in the dark, said Henry.
Maybe, said Bill, warming his hands by the fire. But he was still not sure.
The two men went to sleep with the cries of the wolves in the air. It was a very cold night.

Every day the hungry wolves came closer, and every night one of the dogs disappeared. In the
dark the men could see the of the wolves. They looked at the men and their dogs through the

One of the wolves was a red and gray female. She was clever and she was not scared of
humans. She stole food from the dogs at night and cut their ropes with her Sharp teeth. When
a dog was free it ran away. Then the wolf pack killed it and ate it.
That female wolf probably lived with humans in the past, said Henry. She knows too many
things.
Maybe, replied Bill. This was his usual reply to Henry, but this time he was angry. that wolf
is killing all our dogs. We have to stop her! he said, taking his rifle.
Be careful, Bill! said Henry as Bill disappeared into the forest. Henry could not see behind the
tres but he could imagine the scene. The hungry wolf pack made a circle around Bill. Henry
Heard three shots. No more bullets, he said as he counted.
Then he Heard nothing, just the sound of the wolves growling.
Bill never returned.
Henry was alone and afraid. Every night the wolves came closer.
He made a big fire to try and keep them away. But son there was very Little Wood left and the
fire became smaller. He felt tired and hungry. There was nothing he could do. He dad to sleep.
One night he saw the eyes of the female wolf. The wolf pack were ready to attack.

2 THE CUB
The wolves ran for miles, looking for food. Finally after many days, they saw a big moose. It
was bigger tan the wolves, but they made a circle around it. Then they attacked it and killed it.
The pack now had enough toe at for several days.
Over the next few weeks they started to find more food. Their hunger was finally at an end.
Now that they were stronger, many wolves started to leave the pack. Soon only four of them
remained: the White female Wolf and three male wolves. There was a strong three-year-old, a
younger Wolf, who was the leader of the pack, and the oldest Wolf, One Eye, who once lost his
eye in a fight. The male wolves were always fighting because they all wanted to be the partner
of the female Wolf.
One day there was a big fight. The three- year- old bit One Eye harder tan usual, and One Eye
was very fierce and fought back. The fight began fairly, but it didnt end fairly. The Young

she lay down in the center and looked at the entrance. She felt happy.
One Eye was lying at the entrance of the cave. He was listening to the sounds of spring the
songs of the birds and the noise of the insects. It was warm and sunny outside the cave. He
wanted the female wolf to get up, but she growled at him. So he got up and left the cave
alone. He was hungry.
When he came back he Heard the sound of something strange but familiar. What was it? The
mother growled to keep him away. He understood, and that night he slept near the entrance
to the cave.
The next morning the sun shone brightly into a Little corner of the cave. From a distance One
Eye could see five Little cubs. He knew what he had to do. He must find food to keep the
mother strong because the cubs needed her milk.
After about a month the cubs eyes began to open. The cubs had White fur like their mother.
But one cub was different from his brothers and sisters. He had gray fur like his father.
The Gary cub knew his brothers and sisters, and played with them in the cave. He knew his
mother, because she was soft and warm and she had milk for him.
His world was small. He knew the cave had three walls. The fourth Wall was made of light. He
liked the light. When he walked towards it, his mother got angry and stopped him. He son
understood not to walk towards that Wall.
When his father came back through the Wall of light, he often brought meat with him. But for
many days there was no meat and very Little milk. The cubs were very hungry.
One Eye hunted every day, but he could not find any food.
Without food toe at the cubs became very weak. One by one they died of hunger, but the gray
cub was very strong and remained alive. Now, without his brothers and sisters, he was all
alone.

hunting in the forest. He was a wolf and this was what he had to do. Wolves needed to fight
and to kill for meat.

3THE INDIAN CAMP
One morning the cub left the cave and went to the stream to drink. In front of him, he
suddenly saw five tall animals. They had two legs and they moved differently to other animals.
What animals were these?
The cub was looking at men for the first time.
The men did no trun away or attack. They did not move. They sat and watched him. The cub
did not move either. A part of him wanted to run away but another part of him told him to
stay. His instinct told him that these animals were strong and powerful.
One of the Indians came closet o him. The cub growled and showed his teeth. The Indian
laughed and pointed to his teeth Look! White fangs! he said.
The indian moved forward to touch him. The cub was confused. Should he fight or run? When
the mans hand came closer to him he jumped up and bit it. He felt the Indians hand hit his
head and the instinct to fight left him He sat down in front of them and cried. The Indians
laughed loudly at this.
Then he Heard a sound in the forest. It was his mother. She was never afraid and she was
coming to help him.
She ran towards the men and growled. THey stood back.
Suddenly one of the Indians said in a low voice, kiche.
The female wolf stopped. kiche! the indian cried.
The wolf lay down quietly on the grass in front of the man. The cub was very surprised because
his mother was obeying the men.
He knew then that the men were powerful.
One of the men touched the wolf but she sat still.
This is Kiche, said an indian. Her father was a wolf but her mother was a dog. She ran away
a year ago when there was no more meat to feed the dogs.
yes, i remember. She went t olive with the wolves, said another indian.
kiche was my brothers dog, but now hes dead. Taht means kiche is mine and her cub is
mine, too. Ill call the cub White fang, said Gray Beaver proudly.
The indians took kiche and White fang to their camp. At the camp White Fang saw dogs for the
first time. When the dogs saw White Fang and Kiche they attacked them. Kiche and the indians
defended him. The indiams hit the dogs with big sticks. After this he saw that the dogs obeyed
the men. His instincts about the men were right.
In the evening White Fang watched gray Beaver. He was making something with sticks. Then,
among the sticks, he saw a living things that moved and turned. It was the color of the sun.
This colored light attacted him, like the light at the entrance of the cave. He moved towards it
curiously, in the same way that he went towards the danger outside his cave. He came closer
to the fire until his nose and tongue touched it. He liked the warm feeling it gave him.

Suddenly he gave a loud cry. The pain was terrible. His tongue was burnt and his nose hurt
terribly. The indians thought this was very funny and started laughing. He didnt understand
why they laughed at him like this, but their laughter hurt him more tan the burnt nose and
tongue. He looked at his mother but she could not help him. He still had a lot to learn.
Every day there were new esperiences for White Fang. He found out more about men and
their called him. When they tied him with a rope, he stayed in his place. When they hit him, he
growled angrily but he did not bite.
But these changes took many weeks. He still remembered his early life in the cave and in the
forest when he was free to explore the wild. He wanted the freedom of the forests. He
understood that was where he belonged.
The worst part of his life at the Indian camp was the dogs. Liplip was the leader of the dog
pack. He was older and stronger tan White Fang, and he did not like the wolf cubs arrival in
the pack.
Lip-lip often stole White Fangs food. So the hungry wolf cub became a clever thief. He moved
around the camp silently and knew what was happening everywhere. He took food from the
camp when the Indians werent looking. The Indians did not like the things he did. But, in his
