Introduction v
Introduction
The purpose of having student managers is to allow the University of North Texas students to participate within athletics department team activities and competitions while gaining valuable work-life skills and creating relationships to last throughout their term of service and beyond graduation. Student managers are expected to follow the guidelines listed within this manual.
Fly Ch 1 Chapter 1 3
Chapter 1 Practice We will have practice Monday Friday in the off-season, while having practice every day oppose to game days during the season. Student managers are required to attend every practice. If you have to miss any practice please contact a member of the coaching staff beforehand, so we can plan accordingly.
Practice Schedule Before every practice a practice schedule will be issued out to the staff. You need to study the schedule and be on top of things, for practice to go as smooth as possible. Here is an example of the practice schedule:
The schedule has the drill corresponding with the time and comments. You will put up the time of each drill on the clock, so coach knows how much time he has left. Be sure that you dont start the clock until you hear a whistle. Each drill should be set up fast, so you all have to work together to achieve this goal. One person should be on the clock, another helping out with the drills, and the other getting the equipment ready for the next drill. (*See equipment)

Weight Room We will be in the weight room on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the off-season, but during the season this will be reduced to one day a week, usually Wednesday. Your job in the weight room is limited. Your only obligations are to make sure the weight room is set up for what particular workout were doing for the day, and occasionally spot a player if we have an odd man out. (*see below) You will also be responsible for making sure the weight room is straightened, for example rack all the weights, make sure its not any trash, and that nobody left anything in there. Example of spotting someone (Make sure weight doesnt fall on lifter)

Scout Team/Drills In our program we like for our student managers to be somewhat athletic, a basketball background would be great, that reason being because we like to give our players a look at what our opponents our doing. So, we tend to use our coaching staff and a manager or two to either throw a defense at the players, or run a particular offensive set. Your job on the scout team is not to try to be a superstar; its to do exactly what coach tells you to do according to the opposing teams philosophy. You might also have to participate in drills as well. If a player is hurt or misses practice, and we need an extra body in a drill we should be able to throw you in there. Thats why its important to pay attention to drills while on the sideline. Water Breaks We will have several two minutes water breaks throughout practice. Each player is issued their own water bottles so just refilling throughout practice would be all you needed to do. The first minute of the break half of the team will be shooting free-throws, while the other half will get water. The groups will then switch at the one minute mark. The student mangers will be rebounding for the players during this time.
Concluding Practice When coach calls the final break for the end of practice you have a checklist of things to do before you go home. Make sure all the balls are accounted for and racked. Put all drill equipment in the bucket. Turn of clock, and pack it up. Make sure theres no trash left in the gym. Gather players practice jerseys, and put them in the washer machine.

Chapter 4 In-Game Two student managers will be on the bench during games. One will be taking stats, while the other will be in charge of water and towels. The third manager will be filming the game, but that will be discussed in chapter 5. Stat keeper The stat keeper will receive a sheet like the one below. You will mark a tally for each stat the corresponding player contributes. The basketball diagram comes into play when youre taking down shots. How to take down shots 1. Put a circle with the corresponding number of the player who took the shot where the shot was taken. 2. If the player misses the shot leave the circle blank. 3. Water and Towels Obligations for Student Manager Responsible for Water and Towels Give players subbing out of game water and towel. Keep water cups filled. Give the five in the game water and towels during timeouts.
Timeouts During timeouts we need to the two student managers on the bench to pull out five chairs for the players in the game.
24 Student Manager Manual Chapter 5 Film
Recording is a very important part of our program. We use the film you obtain to scout teams, show our players how to do a specific set, and/or what theyre doing right or wrong. We need you to know exactly what we are looking for in film. Games When filming games this is what we are looking for. Show scoreboard at every dead ball. Try to get a whole half of the court. Dont zoom in on the ball. Dont zoom in on one person. (its not an highlight tape) Be sure to keep the camera charged especially when on road trips. Always have an extra tape.
Practice Our program likes to film our practices to see what works and what doesnt. There will be one person designated to film practices and games.
When filming practices this is what we are looking for. You dont have to record everything. We only need the first 2-3 minutes of a drill. Record all of scrimmages Stop recording when a coach is talking.

Chapter 6 Expectations Grades We understand the reason you are at the University of North Texas is to earn your degree. Our goal is to help you as much as possible to have an experience as a student manager while maintaining a healthy GPA. However, managers who fall below the grade point average of 2.0 will be considered ineligible and will be taken off the staff for that semester and further involvement with your sport will be discussed in a meeting with the equipment staff and your coaches. Study Hall Just like the players student managers are required to attend study hall.
