Matthew 4:19
PASTORS CORNER

Our Scripture Readings this week-end, shifts from con-
vincing the Apostles and disciples that Jesus is the Christ
and that He had risen from the dead as He promised, to
witnessing the zeal and determination of the Apostles
and disciples in spreading the Good News of Christ.

In the First Reading and in the Second Reading we focus
on the words and actions of Saint Peter, the Head of the
Apostles. He is bold and he is resolute. He does not
mince words, nor is he afraid any more. He also exhorts
the first Christians to accept suffering and sacrifice, for
our own purification, in imitation of Christ.

In the Gospel the familiar theme of the Good Shepherd
and the good sheep are once again presented to us. If we
but listen to the voice of the Shepherd, we shall live in
peace and have peace in our hearts.

We also celebrate today, MOTHERS DAY. We wish all
Mothers Gods blessings as they live lives of sacrifice
and dedication. A good mother gets the attention of the
father and the children through her love and constant
care for the Family.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY.

Our responsorial psalm is psalm 23. We shall sing/recite
it with our whole hearts. Praising God and expressing
our deep trust in Him bring us the joy of life and the joy
to live with purpose and satisfaction. Fr Sebastian
JESUS IS,
- LORD AND CHRIST
St. Matthias
According to Acts 1:15-26, during the days after the Ascension, Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (about 120
of Jesus followers). Now that Judas had betrayed his ministry, it was necessary, Peter said, to fulfill the scriptural
recommendation that another should take his office. Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied
us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on
which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection (Acts 1:21-22). They nominated two
men: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. They prayed and drew lots. The choice fell upon Matthias, who was added to
the Eleven. Matthias is not mentioned by name anywhere else in the New Testament. COMMENT: What was the
holiness of Matthias? Obviously he was suited for apostleship by the experience of being with Jesus from his baptism
to his ascension. He must also have been suited personally, or he would not have been nominated for so great a re-
sponsibility. Must we not remind ourselves that the fundamental holiness of Matthias was his receiving gladly the
relationship with the Father offered him by Jesus and completed by the Holy Spirit? If the apostles are the founda-
tions of our faith by their witness, they must also be reminders, if only implicitly, that holiness is entirely a matter of
Gods giving, and it is offered to all, in the everyday circumstances of life.

Mothers Day:
What does it
mean?

Learn about the roots
of Mother's Day, and
find ways to celebrate
the holiday and to
honor mothers
throughout the year.

Mothers as Nurturers
A major characteristic of mothers is the ability to be
nurturing and relational. This excerpt
from Awakening to Prayer: A Woman's Perspec-
tive describes a way for women to use God's love as
a model for nurturing and relating to their families.

Hallmark of a Good Family
Both mothers and fathers often expect to have a pic-
ture-perfect family, and struggle with the realization
that their own family falls short of the mark. Dr. Ray
Guarendi's Adoption: Choosing It, Living It, Loving
It contains valuable insights for all families.

I Am the Prodigal Mom
The gospel story of the prodigal son is for parents a
perfect example of forgiveness and second chances.

I am the good
shepherd, says the Lord;
I know the sheep,
and mine know me

Jn 10-14

NEW PARISHIONERS: Newcomers are encouraged to register with the parish and are welcome to par-
ticipate in all parish activities and ministries. Registration forms are available in the back of the Church.
Why does God, who is love, keep us waiting?
Because He is love, and seeks love. Love that does
not know how to wait is not love. To love is to
give ourselves. Not only for a fraction of a life-
time, nor with a part of its strength: love is, and
seeks, the total gift of self.

Love is based on esteem. We love only what we
value and admire. We love only the good. What
is too easily and too quickly come by does not at-
tract deep souls. It becomes a superficial good,
which cannot satisfy the rich capacity of their na-
ture. And they are right. The relations between be-
ings are governed by laws, which they guess at but
cannot always define. It is a law that real treasures
are deeply buried and carefully hidden; that serious
acquisitions call for proportionate efforts. What
exceptions there are do not weaken the argument.
God is the treasure beyond price. Were He to give
Himself too easily, even the best would turn their
backs upon Him. St. John Climacus gives a similar
reason, but with an interesting difference.
Prayer, he says, is an activity that develops and
enriches enormously. It is a source of merit and
satisfaction, and of spiritual progress of every
kind. God imposes repetitions and a certain per
sistence in prayer in order to increase our merit.
Delays in union are not time lost; far from it. God
sees very far ahead; He makes wonderful use of
what we call evil of our wanderings, our hesi-
tations and detours, although He does not love
them or want them. It is at these moments, above
all, that we need confidence and per-severance.
The prayer, whether for ourselves or for others,
that is not discouraged, which persists and besieges
Heaven, touches Gods heart; and that is why He
tells us to persevere.

Your words, Lord,
are Spirit and life;
You have the words of
everlasting life.

What Are the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit?
The twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit are works that we can
perform only with the aid of the Holy Spirit. Therefore,
the performance of such works is an indication that the
Holy Spirit dwells in the Christian believer. Answer: The
twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit are charity (or love), joy,
peace, patience, benignity (or kindness), goodness, lon-
ganimity (or long suffering), mildness, faith, modesty,
continency, and chastity.
What Are the Seven Deadly Sins?
The seven deadly sins, more properly called the seven
capital sins, are the sins to which we are most susceptible
because of our fallen human nature. They are the tenden-
cies that cause us to commit all other sins. They are called
"deadly" because, if we engage in them willingly, they
deprive us of sanctifying grace, the life of God in our
souls. Answer: The seven deadly sins are pride, covetous-
ness (also known as avarice or greed), lust, anger, glut-
tony, envy, and sloth.

THE EUCHARIST IS THE HEART
OF THE CHURCH
By Saint Pope John Paul II

"I Am the Living Bread" (Jn 6:51). The message
of John's Gospel completes the liturgical picture
of this great Eucharistic mystery that we are
celebrating today... The words of John's Gospel
are the great proclamation of The Eucharist, af-
ter the miraculous multiplication of bread near
Capernaum. Anticipating as it were the time
even before the Eucharist was instituted, Christ
revealed what it was. He spoke thus: "I Am the
Living Bread which came down from heaven; if
anyone eats of this Bread, he will live forever;
and the Bread which I shall give for the life of
the world is My Flesh" (Jn 6:51). And when
these words brought protests from many who
were listening Jesus added: "Truly, truly I say to
you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of man
and drink His Blood, you have no life in you; he
who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has
eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last
day. For My Flesh is food indeed, and My
Blood is drink indeed. He who eats My Flesh
and drinks My Blood abides in me, and I in
him." (Jn 6:53-56).

What Are the Four Cardinal Virtues?

The cardinal virtues are the four primary moral
virtues. Unlike the theological virtues, which
are gifts of God through grace, the cardinal vir-
tues can be practiced by anyone.

T h e f o u r c a r d i n a l v i r t u e s
are prudence, justice, fortitude (or courage),
and temperance (or moderation). You can find
an in-depth discussion of each in The Cardinal
Virtues.

Then from the cloud came
a voice that said,
This is my chosen Son;
listen to Him.
