Introduction Choral Speaking is the interpretation of poetry or porse by a group.comprising anything from half a dozen to a hundered speakers.It involves a full and varied use of the individual voices that make up the group.Ther may be divisions of the whole group into light and dark voices,broken and unbroken ,male and female ,treble and so on.Invidual voices may be used as solo. On the 9 February 2011, SJK (Tamil) Ladang Tebong was given the honour by the Melaka State Education Department to organize the state level Choral Speaking Competition for primary school for the year 2011. Since the competition was introduced by the School Division,this was the first time the Malacca State Education Department entrusted a rural Tamil school to organize this competition. The State Level Choral Speaking Competition was held in SJKT Ladang Tebong school hall . At 8.00 am all the schools taking part, registered and submitted their choral speaking scripts to the state technical chairman. Twelve schools took part in this years competition. The competition was first held in their district/zone level. These schools were Champions and runners-up of their respective zone level, where now they compete in the state level. They were SK Ayer Keroh and SK Jalan Dato Palembang representing Ayer Keroh Zone, SK Infant Convent Jesus (1), SK Saint Francis Xaviers representing Bukit China Zone , SK Tenkera ( 1 ) and SK Methodist representing Tanjung Zone SJKT(T) Alor Gajah, SK Masjid Tanah representing Alor Gajah Zone, SK Jasin , SK Merlimau representing Jasin Zone and SK Kubu and SK Sacred Heart representing Melaka Tengah Zone. By 8.30 am, the school hall was packed. The ushers had difficult time making sure that all participating school sat at their respective places allocated for them. Besides,the participating school ,there were headmasters and headmistresses, officials from state and district education office, accompanying teachers, judges , English Language Officers and organizing committee members. The competition started off with the opening ceremony by En Mohd Kassim b Abdullah, the Alor Gajah District Education Officer at about 9.00 am. In his speech he stressed the importance and the objectives of the competition. He believed that having such competition, it will enhance the pupils language, brave to speak the language and also promote goodwill and better understanding among different races in the country. He also stress that this sort of programs will also promote 1 Malaysia. Immediately after his opening speech, Mr. A.Jesudass, the state technical chairman for choral speaking read the rules and regulation which are as follows. Competition Rules: Eligibility : The Choral Speaking Competition is open to student from Year 4 - Year 6 only. Each Choral Speaking team is to come from ONE school only Time : Each team is given a presentation time limit of 5 8 minutes No marks will be awarded thereafter. Team : Each team should comprise 30 35 students. A conductor should be appointed from these students. Each team should be accompanied by four teachers in charge. Material : Selection of material is free and can be in form poetry or short prose.Materials must be originally written and authentic Participants are not allowed to refer to any notes or printed materials during performance. Material presented must not touch on sensitive issues, such as race, religion colour personalities, etc. Copies of choral speaking scripts must be submitted to the organizers two weeks prior to the competition Attiire : All participants should wear school uniform when competing. a) Boys white short sleeves shirts and dark blue pants. b) Girls blue pinafore/skirt and white blouse/baju kurung. c) Conductor the use of white gloves is allowed. d) Ties, bows and jackets are not allowed. There should be no inclusions of music, singing, sketches, skits or drama, costumes, props to enhance the presentation or artificial sound effect which are electronically or physically aided. Stage arrangements: The arrangements of the teams on the stage will be fixed 3 tiered rows. Judges :The state level competition will judged by 5 Adjudicators. The Judges for these levels will be decided by the State Technical chairman Decisions : Points will be allocated according to the score sheet and aggregated. Judges will collectively determine the placing by a clear majority vote The decision of the judges is final. Individual team marks will not be disclosed.
Prizes : Cash prizes, trophies and certificates will be awarded to the winning teams. Aims and objectives: 1. Is to encourage and increase the usage of English among students 2. To build confidence in students to speak, render, memorize and expose in English 3. An alternate form of learning English in a fun way. 4. Promoting racial integrations among different races in Malaysia 5. Improve students speaking skill using choral speaking Duration of the programme : 9.th February from 8.00 till 1.00pm Target group :Year 4 -6 student
Report on of implementation of programme : The Choral speaking was held in SJKT Ladang Tebong Hall. This programme run smoothly.12 schools taking part .Most of the participants do their best in performance,come of as self confident and well prepared.Two student represented in our school.All the participating school sat their respective places.Alor Gajah District Education officer praise students for their good performance.The audience were overenjoyed with the teams I imleemented with the cooperation of all students and teachers.The adjudicators had had very hard time choosing among the best.Mark was given by panel selected by school.This programme attract students and audiences.The audience and participant schools were entertained with a action song.Eveyone amaized by their song.
Strengths and weakness of programme Everyone happy with the result. This programme was held smoothly with any problems. Most of the participant have self confident. Improve grammar and improve listening skills.
Weakness of the programme This competition shoud be held in full air condition room. Rela members had difficult time to controls the traffic. Few students get nervous . Over confident. Some of the student dont have clear voice. Later he introduced he adjudicators for the competition. They were Mr. John Ayavu from SK Melekek, Pn Hjh Hanizah Amat from SMK Dang Anum , Mr. Vincent Koh , State Education Office Chief Adjudicator , Madam Sandra Yong Seck Pui SK Gangsa and Mr Khairuddin from SK Rumbia. The time keeper was Madam Perlyn Suzana from SK Tebong. The five adjudicators were seated just beside the conductors platform. Then, the chairperson introduced the names of all the schools taking part in this years competition. The audiences were overjoyed with the teams good performances. The scripts were well written. They were also authentic and most of the scripts were about unity, current issues and globalization. Their pronunciations were very clear and accurate. The subject matters were well projected .Their clarity and expressions were appealing to the audiences. The adjudicators had very hard time choosing the best among the best. At about noon, the adjudicators were taken to the school library to fill in score sheet and to verify the marks. While waiting for them, the audience and participating schools were entertained with actions song by the Level 1 pupils of SK Sacred Heart where they won the National Level Action Song 2010 in Alor Star, Kedah. Their fifteen minutes performance was indeed spectacular. Everyone was amazed by their song, movements and actions. They were given a standing ovation. At about 12.30 pm, the State Education Director, Cik Hajah Julia arrived for the closing ceremony. In her speech, she congratulated all the participating teams. She also praised SJK( T ) Ladang Tebong for organizing the event in grand scale. She also thanked the adjudicators, the state technical chairman and all who have worked hard to make this event successful. Later, the chairperson announced the winners of the State Level Choral Speaking for Primary School Year 2011. The winner will also represent the state in the National Level Choral Speaking Competition which will be held in Pulau Pinang in 23 September 2011. Champion : SK Infant Jesus (1) 1 st Runners up: SK Sacred Heart 2 nd Runner :SJKT Ladang Tebong The best conductor was: Ryan Harrison of SK Saint Francis The championed received a challenge trophy, certificates and medal each and cash prize of RM 2000.00 for the school.
The 1 st runners up received certificates and medals each and cash prize of RM 1000.00 for the school The 2 nd Runners Up received certificates and medal and cash prize of RM 500.00 The best conductor received a trophy, certificate and KFC cash voucher worth RM 200.00 All officials including the adjudicators and technical chairman received souvenir from the State Education Director. As a token of appreciation, the headmistress of the organizing school, Madam R.Pushparani presented a basket of fruits to Cik Hjh Julia bte Osman. Later, all guests, teachers and pupils, officials and the VIPs were served lunch at the canteen. Suggestions: 1. State Level Competitions should be held in a fully air-conditioned room to .This is to enable everyone to be more comfortable 2. All grade A schools or schools have an enrollment of more than 500 students and above should be encouraged to take part in the competition. All District English Language Officers should play major part to achieve this. 3. More exposure to must be given to primary school teachers on this program or the District Education Office should conduct courses on this program. Most of the teachers are not very familiar with choral speaking. Writing good scripts is also a problem to most of the teachers. 4. When selecting school to organize a state level competition like choral speaking competition where 30 35 students in a team the State Education should be aware of the following problems a school would ought to face:- a. Ample parking spaces for buses ,cars and other vehicles b. Location of schools due to the competition the Rela members had difficult time controlling the traffic as the school is located just beside a district hospital. The road leading to the school was congested and the road was almost impassable to all traffic. The participants who take part happy with the result and flow of the competition..All the audience ,parents were give support.Choral speaking prepare the students who would be future leaders.of nation.The programme run smoothly.In future organizers need to run activities like this..I believed that participants have a talent that make have a real differrence in the world. Overrall,Choral speaking providing benefits development of pupills.
