Film Report- Why should our Film Be produced?
I am making this report to persuade the producers that our film isnt just any film, but it is unique
and different to any other film out there. This Film, Territory has had so much thought and care gone
into it, to make it not one of them usual generic films but to give the film its own identity which
people all over London can relate to. The film is surprisingly realistic, authentic and gritty everything
what a British urban film should be. It gives an insight of urban London teenagers living in London,
especially those who may not live in London or originally from there. This film gives them an
opportunity to have a realistic and practical view of what London teenagers go through in their
normal everyday lives that some people are not aware of. However this film is better suited to those
living in London and of young age as they can directly relate back to this film and can finally as if
theyre lives are being presented to the public but in a non-stereotype way. This Film is not only
about gang violence this is what makes it different to them other films as it has other elements
added to it such as romance features, Drama and Action. You can say this film is a Hybrid genre
which I think has not been done before, for this type of film and this is what makes this film very
different to others. It is something that has not been done before and is fresh on the screen. I know
that this film is going to be a success as play hard productions has carried out significant primary and
secondary research into this film just to make sure that the film we are making is of first class
quality. We have also indentified the demographics and psychographics of the target audience
which we are trying to reach I will show this in this report and illustrate just how important they are
to the making of our film. The pre production for our film and been fully completed, the only thing
left filming which is where the financing is needed.

PLOT- Narrative of our film
A gang of boys get into a decisive battle with a fiercest rival gang to decide the King of Eltham.
Knowing this very encounter may decide their unavoidable fate, the leader of the protagonists gang
calls upon his former friend for assistance. Thrown in the state of confusion is a girl they both knew
from their primary school days... the very girl who caused them to part ways.

USP- unique selling point
The film we are making has many unique selling points and is different to any other film out there;
this film is not made just purely for entertaining purposes but is made for people to relate to. This
film addresses the bigger issues of London society which is avoided sometimes and is not spoken
about as much. This film says a thousand words just by itself and addresses a hundred issues just in
this short film. This film is a realistic approach to gangs, girls and friendships which are all
intertwined between each other; there is no other film like this on the market which is this down-to-
earth while still creating that entertaining experience. All the actors we have hired in the film are
from London themselves and we try to hire actors who have been through a somewhat similar
situation as our film to make it even more appealing and realistic to the audience.
We wanted to add a girl to the film in order for the twist to work well and the advantage of having a
girl in the short film is that the film will be able to appeal to girls more, making it more watchable for
both audiences and it will be easy for the audience to understand the twist in the film again making
it more relatable to the audience. This film is destined to be great and the budget for this short film
may be high especially for this type of film however this is due to the intriguing crew list, equipment
and more.
Primary Research
Play Hard productions has carried out significant amounts of primary research, in order to make sure
that we are making no mistakes with our film. We each did a significant portion of primary research;
my role was to ask questions over social networks such as twitter and so on. This one of the most
effective ways of gathering information as it is fast, reliable and you are able to ask more people
questions. I will do analysis of some of the information that we had gathered and explain after why
we asked them questions; I asked the same questions to 15 people over whatsapp. It was an even
mix of males and females; everyone was under the age of 21.

Question 1: Is our film location suitable?
10 people said that it was while 5 people of people said it wasnt. This reassured us that our film
location is perfect for the film and does not need to be changed.
Question 2: If our film was on YouTube, would definitely you see it?
Richard Fashola Film Report
Richard Fashola Film Report

12 people said they would watch, three people said they wasnt sure depends on when it comes out
and the rest of the three people said they would definitely not watch it. This proved to us that our
film will do well when released and only a very small minority will not watch it.
Question 3: Can you relate to the films narrative and have been in a similar position?
8 people said they do and have been in the situation, while the rest of the 7 people said they
havent. This has shown us that even though most people said they relate to the films narrative and
have been in a similar situation. The rest of the 40% said they havent since this is still quite a big
percentage we have to try and address this issue. Play hard productions will work very hard to make
sure that our film is more open and that more people are able to relate to our film.

Question 4: Is the budget of our film sensible, for the type of film it is?
8 people said yes it is, while the other 7 people said no it isnt. I myself agree that the budget for our
film is quite high especially for the length of our film. Due to just a bit more than half saying no isnt,
Play hard productions will try to lower costs of the film especially since this will be first proper short
film of play hard productions. However whatever the budget may be, the Film will always be aiming
to be at the top.
Question 5: What makes our film Unique?
8 people said it was realistic and can somehow relate to it.
4 people said it looks entertaining and fun to watch.
3 people said it is not their type of film genre.
This helped us in identifying what makes our film such a unique one and what attributes we should
focus most on, to make the film even more unique and appeal to more of the target audience.
Question 6: What more could we improve on the film?
4 people said nothing else should be changed; it is as good as it is.
5 people said add more locations and vary it a bit more, in order to make it more exciting for the
viewer.
Richard Fashola Film Report
Richard Fashola Film Report

6 people said cut some characters and make the Narrative more straight forward to understand,
This is by far the most important question of the whole questionnaire, as it is helping us indentify
each part of the film we should improve on and make better, in order to make this film truly superb.
By the answers, the two answers play hard productions wants to focus on is Add more locations and
cut some characters out. We will make sure we do this to our film and add the changes as fast as
possible to get it out of the way; in order to carry on with the more important tasks needed for the
film.
Focus group and Audience feedback
First off I will start off with the Focus group that play hard productions had held; three weeks before
filming will begin. We had make sure that the Focus group that we had was extremely varied, we
had ages between 16-46 in order to make sure that the target audience we was originally aiming for
was correct and suitable. Play hard productions had placed the target audience between 15-21 in
order to cover quite a big range of teenagers and young adults, to get as many people to watch the
short film. The two 45 year olds wasnt very interested in the film to start with so most of their
answers were negative and showed that they both clearly lacked interest in the film. However the
younger ones which were five boys and five girls, the oldest one being 21. This was a good mix we
had and they were much more positive to the short film and all of them had agreed that they would
watch the film on YouTube for free. The focus group was a big help, because it had just further
confirmed our target audience and it illustrated to us some of the things we should work on to make
our film a success among the target audience.
We also asked some of the students that we work with some questions to see what they think of our
film, and what extra advice they can give to us to help with the films production. They are a total of
22 people in our class, so the answers will be out of them.
1. What type of genre do you usually watch?
16 people said Action.
4 people said Horror.
2 people said Drama.

This has shown us that our film should mostly include action scenes to grab the audiences attention
and to keep them engaged with the film throughout at all time, in order for nothing to get boring.

2. Is our narrative easy to understand?

Leslie: yeah its not bad but could do with less characters

Dayo: Make the narrative simpler and everything will start to make more sense

From the feedback from this question, it is showing that our film is not very easy to understand and
that we should use fewer characters. We have made massive changes to our film since gaining
feedback, we have added a narrator to talk through the most important parts in order for the scene
to be explained more and to talk about the back-story to what is happening more. We have also
taken out quite a few characters to make the maximum count of characters four which is a massive
improvement over our previous cast list of nine which was far too much.

3. How well does our Films name relate to the Film synopsis?

Reneta said Yeah it does relate and it does make sense, but the narrative of your film is not only
about gangs and territory.
Goodness said Yeah its perfect you should keep the Film title exactly the same
Bradley said I agree with goodness, keep the films name exactly the same and catches my attention
to the film straightaway
This question insured us and supported us in keeping the name territory, as had Bradley said it grabs
the audiences attention and is catchy. When you hear of the films name, you instantly want to
watch it.

Analysis of the Target audience

Gender: Both Girls and boys want to see the film; there is not much difference between the genders
about who wants to see it or who does not. This is very good as it means our film is open to a far
wider range of people and that more people are open to watching it. I think this is because our film
is not only all about Action and drama which boys mostly like to see in films but it has romance
intertwined so girls are able to relate to the films narrative as well. We made sure that the film is
equally balanced and we thought about all aspects of our audience before making this film.

Age: As we carried out surveys, questionnaires and focus groups it became apparent to us that 15-19
year olds are the ones that seem to enjoy the film the most and are the ones that gave much more
positive feedback, showing us that they are more anticipating of the short films release. The target
audience is appropriate for our film as by the age of 15, they are starting to finally get more mature
and starting to think more like young adults. Especially as our Film has quite a strong message and
meaning behind it, so the audience has to achieve a mature attitude to take the story behind it more
seriously.

Race: Our Film is aimed and suitable for every race out there as every single race can relate to this
film whether youre black, white, Chinese it doesnt matter. We made this film so every person is
able to relate to this film even they think they have nothing in common to the film. Gangs also have
many different colours and cultures so this can help with some specific races thinking that this film is
only aimed at certain types of races. So all in all, this film will have different cultures and races inside
showing especially as London being a multi-racial city.

Psychographics: The psychographics of the target audience is based upon all of the questionnaires,
surveys and focus groups that we have done. We can conclude that we could target people based on
their personalities, values, attitudes, interests and lifestyles. The Target audience will have a strong
sense of friendship and loyalty towards their friends and family, being by them every single step of
the way no matter what they are going through. They will usually have an interest in grime, rap and
hip hop music as the film will have elements of this and they will have an interest in playing sports,
mainly football.

Demographics:
The demographic of the typical viewer of our film is varied and different between each one but I will
do the one where most people can relate to. The average viewer will be 17 years old, either fully
black or mixed race and will have a deep taste in British Grime music. They will be living in London
maybe a council estate in Woolwich and will most likely be attending a loyal school such as crown
woods college. They will be of Average high and build, and they will lead a single life.

Secondary Research
Apart from the primary research which was conducted by play hard productions which is crucial to
our film, secondary research also needs to be done for further exploration into other films to give us
a rough idea how well our film may do. After a relentless and persistent search which took up a lot
of time I have chosen two different films which are Adulthood and kidulthood, Adulthood is the
sequel to kidulthood. Kidulthood is about a young man called Trife (Aml Ameen) who likes to party,
mess around and is just in general a hooligan. However he gets a girl pregnant and is denying
anything to do with the baby, which in return makes the girl resent him even though she is still in
love with him. However as the course of the film goes on he starts to mature, but then he starts to
get in trouble with an older bully called sam. Sam then murders Trife and is sent to prison, this is
where Adulthood starts. He just comes fresh out of prison and is trying to turn his life around; he
wants to start over as a new person. He is trying to adjust back to normal life but there are demons
from his old past that wants revenge on him. As you can see there are both British urban films and
are realistic of the everyday lives of normal British teenagers living in London. They were both well
received by the British public and critics being cited as representative of London teenagers belonging
to gangs.

Looking at the IMDB page of Adulthood it did very well at the UK box office, especially for a film that
was not distributed by a mainstream company but more of an independent company which is a
good achievement. Adulthood done very well at its opening weekend as it earned 1,203,319 at its
opening weekend and has currently grossed 3,247,651. For a film of this nature that is suburb and
even critics were surprised by this result. This gives us a rough idea of how well our film will do and
even though it may not be released in cinemas it still gives us the impression that this genre is liked
by the public.

Apart from its box office figures, Adulthood received positive reviews from the audience. 20/28
reviews believed that they could relate to the film and it was overwhelming depressing at some
stage. It was praised to be highly entertaining to watch, packed with brilliance. If 70% percent of the
reviewers gave positive feedback and felt really connected to the film, then this shows that our film
will definitely have the same effect.

The BBFC rating

The BBFC rating for our film is 15 due to frequent use of Strong language, Moderate violence as
blood is shown and Sexual explicit innuendo is also frequent in our film. Play hard productions went
researched further into the BBFC by going on their website and looking to see what restrictions
Richard Fashola Film Report
Richard Fashola Film Report

there are for a 15 but I will need to make sure that my film doesnt continue with the use of
aggressive strong language or strong violence. I am convinced that if I was to send my film to the
BBFC, it would get 15 rating because of the similarity of the content it has with Adulthood as the film
itself was able to get 15 rating. Especially since our Film is aimed at a target audience of 15-21 year
olds being rated at 15 is directly right into our target audience which is what we wanted. I am
convinced that if I was to send my film to the BBFC, it would get a 15 rating because of the similarity
of the content it has with Adulthood as the film itself was able to get 15 rating.

Learnt about making our film
There is a great multitude of things that I have learnt while making our film especially about being in
a group. When making a short film your group becomes your second family and everything you do is
together. Whilst being in a group I have learnt the skills of teamwork and working together to make
a film-industry level film; we all had to make sure that we shared the same common vision in order
for everyone to work towards that together. Being in a group has taught me to listen to other
peoples opinions which I would not have done before but being in a group has taught me this,
however that doesnt mean to always to keep quiet in a group that sometimes you need to offer
your own opinion on a particular subject but in a calm, but straightforward way. Being in a group has
taught that not one person can do all the work themselves while the rest just sit back and relax; each
person of the group has to pull their own weight and do their own work which should be split
equally between all the team members. If someone is not pulling their weight or is consistently
messing around in the group, it is the other team members job to tell the person to quit messing
around and to focus. There is no one else to do the work apart from us so we each need to be the
leader for each other.
Whilst making the film, I have learnt how to use the different equipment to ensure the film looks
professional and learning why each equipment is needed as this will help me in the future for when I
want to make even more high budget films. It has also taught me how much each equipment costs
and to make sure that it is in line with our total budget for the film as to not go over it. Pre-
production has educated me on just how much work goes into the planning of a film beforehand and
just what needs to be done, for example writing the script makes your brain think extensively and
makes you more imaginative. This ensures that you are more creative and inventive always coming
up with new ideas trying them out which is useful no matter what position you may be in. Pre-
production makes you work hard, as no one else is there to do the work especially as you dont want
to let the rest of the team down. Whilst working on the film had to make sure that the location was
suitable as this was one of my primary roles for the pre-production for the film and I had to carry out
a Reece for all the locations to make sure it is suitable.
The feedback we got the film was mixed, some people really liked the idea and others did not like it
as much, saying that there were too many characters in the film and that the narrative was too
complicated to understand. However we, play hard production aim for perfection in every little
detail no matter how small and to aim for at least 95% of the audience to like the films concept. Due
Richard Fashola Film Report
Richard Fashola Film Report

to it being 60/40 we had to drastically improve the film and to listen to all the feedback we get,
taking everything on board. We took the negative feedback on board and discussed between
ourselves at play hard productions on what needs to be done making a brainstorm then crossing
them out as we made the improvements to the film. One of the main things that were said in the
feedback is that we had too many characters and the films plot would be too difficult to grab from
the start. We addressed this cutting down the characters from 8 to 4 which is a big jump cutting out
all the extra scenes and characters that we dont need. We also implemented a narrator so that
they can explain the beginning of the film and why certain actions are happening in case the
audience are feeling are little confused. We also cut the total running of the film from 10 to 8
minutes just so we have that extra 2 minutes for if anything goes wrong.

EVALUATION
After undertaking the task of doing primary and secondary research, I came to the conclusion that
whether our film is successful or not only really depend on how much your target audience can
associate with the events and the characters in the film. Your target audience have to feel sympathy
and compassion towards the characters at every stage of the scene. Therefore, I will make sure that
the audience are able to form a bond with the characters and feel as if they were part of the
characters life. Through my research, I believe that my film can be successful and therefore should
be produced this is because of the extensive research that has gone into it. I felt that my
questionnaire gave me dependable answers and I was able to get a large amount of information
from a large amount of people regarding my target audience in a short amount of time (even though
I wasnt able to tell if the respondent were being truthful). My focus group revealed more about my
target audience on a personal level, giving me their values and interests. Play Hard Productions
believes that our film should be made because it would be an accomplishment. We have
accomplished a thorough pre-production especially with the personnel. We made sure that they
have the skills and experience necessary for the job. We also have a film specialist helping us by
giving us advice for what and what dont work which is really helpful. The contributors in our film are
talented. There are not just random people but rather actors that did drama as their GCSEs so they
already have the skills needed; therefore making my film look more professional. The amount of
time we spent on our film during pre-production also guarantees success.
TRACK CHANGES
This is some of the faults, grammar mistakes and errors I have done in my report. I am going to
correct all of them and make my work 100% punctual, in order to make my report look more
professional and to look as if this was actually going to be given to a production company.
