An art of writing a research proposal
Contacts: +91 9825549973 () E-mail: nish23481@gmail.com April 19, 2014 36 / 83
How to present strong grant proposals to compete
eectively
Before writing the proposal, keep in mind the following things:
It is necessary to nd out in advance what sources of funding are
available, through governments, United Nations agencies, some
international NGOs or private foundations.
Most donors look for the degree of local initiative in the project
proposal, the utilization of the available resources within the
country itself and the plans for the project to be self-supporting
once the initial funding has been spent.
Your project should be practical, not too costly, and have the
potential for being repeated in other situations.
Contacts: +91 9825549973 () E-mail: nish23481@gmail.com April 19, 2014 37 / 83
Continue....
Increasingly, funding agencies are looking for integrated approaches
to development projects. This means that you will want to see to
what extent your project supports and supplements existing activities,
and is designed to overcome identied problems.
Almost all UN and government agencies, foundations and private
voluntary agencies have their own proposal format, that they will
want you to follow. If you are not in contact with a local or regional
representative, write a letter requesting information as to proper
procedures, application format and funding requirements. While
format varies, the same information is asked for by all agencies and
foundations.
Find out the budgeting cycle of the agency, whether annual,
quarterly or ongoing. Check to see if there is a closing date for
application.
Contacts: +91 9825549973 () E-mail: nish23481@gmail.com April 19, 2014 38 / 83
Key points to consider when looking for a funding agency
Do your homework about potential funder
Identify funders focus
Identify funding patterns
know funders proposal requirements (see checklist)
Any proposal deadlines? What is the next deadline?
Locate a recently funded proposal to use as a guide (Ask a
colleague)
Funders guidelines have to be followed religiously
If you do not qualify, do not apply
Sending our proposals to wrong funders is like trying to buy groceries from a hardware
store

What is research proposal?
Detailed plan of action for scientic inquiry
Systematically present the research problem
Indicates the signicance of the problem
Contains methods to test hypothesis
Provides timetable/outline for project
Provides estimated cost investment
Preliminary step for research work
It synthesizes current knowledge, indicates gaps in knowledge, and species a plan to
address the problem.

Before You Start Writing....
Identify problems and your needs
What areas need further exploration?
Will my idea lead to greater understanding or feel gap of
knowledge?
What you expect from project?
Do you seek fellowship or emoluments from funds or want to
develop facility at your organization?
What will be the duration of project?
How much resources (budget) will be involved in project?
Contacts: +91 9825549973 () E-mail: nish23481@gmail.com April 19, 2014 41 / 83
Before You Start Writing....
Focus on your research project
What is the topic of research?
What is its importance to industry / society?
Do I have necessary skills and knowledge?
What is novelty and rationale of your research?
What are your objectives and goals?
What are hypotheses and research methods?
Which are statistical validation tools?
What is type of research? (Expt. / clinical research)
Will my study have patentability or publication ability?

Introduction
Start with a capsule statement of what is being proposed.
You should not assume that your reader is familiar with your subject.
It should be comprehensible to an informed layman. It
should give enough background to enable him to place your research
problem in a context of common knowledge and should
show how its solution will advance the eld or be important for some other
work.
Do not to overstate, but do state very specically what the
importance of your research is.

Need Statement
Problem gives insight to causes of need
Express bad eects if needs not met
State how urgent the project is needed
Make clear the scale of demand for a solution
Show how project will address the problem

Background Information
This section may not be necessary if the proposal is relatively simple
and if the introduction can present the relevant background in a few
sentences.
If previous or related work must be discussed in some detail, however,
or if the literature of the subject must be reviewed, a background or
literature
review section is desirable.
Literature reviews should be selective and critical.
Reviewers only want to know pertinent works and your evaluation of
them.
A list of works with no clear evidence that you have studied them and
have opinions about them contributes almost nothing to the proposal.

Description of proposed research
This section of the proposal is the comprehensive explanation of the
proposed research.
It is addressed to other specialists in your eld.
It is the heart of the proposal and the primary concern of technical
reviewers.
The description may need several subsections. The description should
include:
Aims or Objectives, Plan of Work, Methodology, Results, Conclusion
Be realistic in designing the program of work.
Research plans should be scaled down to a specic and manageable
project.

Part-IV
Expectations from the academic sta
Contacts: +91 9825549973 () E-mail: nish23481@gmail.com April 19, 2014 78 / 83
What is expected from the faculties or academic sta?
Be humble Avoid members of the "old guard" who appear jaded,
disillusioned, and burned out; you dont want their attitudes to rub o
on you.
Be willing You will be expected to serve on departmental
committees, represent the department on collegewide bodies, sponsor
student organizations, judge contests; the list goes on. Its important
to be able to say no, especially when all of those other tasks begin to
interfere with your primary responsibility of teaching, or leave you
with no personal life. But its equally important to say yes whenever
possible, because, quite frankly, thats how youll endear yourself to
colleagues and administrators.
Be collegial Be friendly, open to sharing ideas and materials, and
willing to help out a colleague in need. Your collegiality must extend
not just to other faculty members but also to everyone else on the
campus, including librarians, admissions counselors, and custodians.

What is expected from the faculties or academic sta?
Be Organized Organization means, rst of all, time management. I
highly recommend using some sort of daily planner, whether print or
electronic. Enter your classes and oce hours rst, then add other
recurring commitments, such as regularly scheduled department or
club meetings. Keep track of any new entries as well, including
appointments with students, committee meetings, and campus
events. Then you can see the gaps in your schedule and plan to use
that time for things like grading papers, working on committee
assignments, and eating.
Be low-maintenance No one enjoys being around people who are
always needy, who always expect others to go out of their way but
rarely reciprocate, whose lives are always fraught with some sort of
drama.
