Our most popular race of tlie year was once again a big
success. The Acr Lingus tickets which arc ralcd off to
a random nisher have a lot to do with the continuing
popularity of the event. Among the names of the
nishers can be seen the spouses, children and parents
of the racing regulars. Some runners participate in both
events to increase their odds of winning the coveted
Acr lingus tickets. The day was especially festive since
it actually WAS St. Patrick's Day. And no one
complained about the mild spring weather.
Moses Matscbula was king of the shamrocks,
wi nni ng t he l OK ev ent i n 34: 18. Mos es and
continually-improving Tommy Neeson dueled through
the entire race. At one point in the second loop,
Matscbula - slightly in the lead - took a wrong turn.
Nccson called him back and Matscbula eventually
regained the lead with a 9-second victory over Neeson.
in the women's race, Bmic Barnes of Chappaqua ran
an impressive 41:18 to beat out Cheryl Johnson by
four seconds. Emic has kept a surprisingly low prole
for a woman who can turn in a 41-minute lOK on our
tough EDR course. She docs most of her running in
Chappaqua. Those Chappaqua hills may be the
explanation for her running abilities. Mary Tolson also
ran well, nishing third in 41:45.
Many ainners turned in notable performances. John
Hol l and ni shed 4th overal l to take the masters race.
Among women masters it was Helen Gordon in 42:49.
Nancy laun (who seems to be racing less and enjoying
it more) took second place with 43:30. Bob Rogan also
turned in a ne time of 45:33 to take the 60+ category.
I he race among the 50-59 men was very competitive
with the rst three fmishing within 16 seconds of each
ot l i cr and al l under 40 mi nut es. The vi ct or i n t hi s
catcgoiy was Frank Byrne, followed by Erwin KorlT
and John Courts. Among the younger participants, Jim
Rollnvcll, 16, turned in a very nice 38:11 and Sharon
Trainor completed the course in 56:13.
The two-mile "fun run" saw almost 200 participants.
Tom Church was the rst to nish this event, in 10:31.
(We'll have to talk to Tom about his idea of "fun".)
The prize of the day went to George Ray of
Kalonah, 88th nisher of the fun run and winner of the
Acr Lingus tickets to Ireland. Complete results start
on page 17.

MUDDERS AND GRUNTERS
by Hagar
The dawn broke with ominous signs. The previous
day's soaking rain put the course into excellent condition
lots of giop and slop to put each step into tenuous
footing at best. Yet it didn't seem to phase either Andy
MofFatt or Alice Willis, both of whom set course records
for the 5th annual Mudders and Grunters, with times of
28:25 and 35:59 respectively. But the looks on the faces
of the other 60 nishers who traversed the briar patches
and hilly terrain covered in mud and scratches said they
couldn't wait until next year. The Hash House Harriers
team of Church, Herreid, young Neeson and Max
Headroom took the coveted "Geronimo Cup^. The
event is supposed to duplicate what the British call Cross
Country and the Scottish call Fell running a type of
running very unfamiliar to Americans with their
mamcured courses. Besides course records being broken
in both the male and female divisions, many myths were
also broken: such as the myth that you will not nd elite
runners such as sub-30-minute lOK ruimer Andy
Moatt of the Westchester Roadrunners Club or his
female counterpart Alice Willis running these courses --
that they are too brittle, afraid of getting hurt etc. etc.
Well, we can put that theory to rest. Another myth that
these razees are reserved for the hardy, rugged male on a
masochistic trip was laid to rest by 10-year-old Ray
Kulkman and 70-year-old Russ UphofF. Both stated
that they were looking forward to next year's race. For
those of you who think you might not like it or perhaps
not even survive it, try it you just might like it. See
you next year.

B O S T O N A L T E R N AT I V E
by Linda Gepperl
" Low- Kcy- Race- of - t hc- Year " honor s have been
awarded to the 1991 Boston Alternative races. Even with
collector T-shirts from the club T-shirt archives being
given away, there were only 28 nishers of the lOK event.
The 2-milc fun run (no T-sliirt, no entry fee) drew 27
participants.
Mike Gossct had an easy time of it, taking the lOK
event in 38:20. Richard Perykasz was second in 39:26 and
Steve Moanzl took the third slot. Leo Gormley (42:24)
was the rst master to nish, followed closely by the rst
member of the half-century club, Brian Wheaton (42:33).
Jean Vaughn was rst woman, at 43:53. Second place
went to Mary Dunnett, who ran the race as part of her
training for the Pittsburgh Marathon.
In the 2-mile event, Tommy Neeson and Doug Miller
dueled for rst place, with Neeson edging out Miller by
10 seconds. First woman to fmish was Samantha Levinc,
3, who rolled through the course in 15:29. (Her dad, Siu,
was pushing her stroller.) The rst woman to nish on
her feet was Nancy Young, running the loop in 15:50.
(It would have been simpler to list those nishers who
did not win awards, but that would have been tacky, so
we didn't.)
Weather-wise, there could hardly have been a better day
for racing. After the race everyone enjoyed the
refreshments while waiting for the results to be posted.
They didn't have to wait long. Tliis race was the rst test
of Greg Diamond's new computerized scoring scheme.
Runners were logged into the computer as they crossed
the nish line. Then a button was pushed, and PRESTO!
complete, tabulated results. Greg has taken the headaches
and backaches out of the scoring process.

nightmare, however, was the baggage claim. It started to rain about 3 1/2
hours into the race, and, as you can imagine, the last thing you want to do
after runni ng a marathon i s stand i n the rai n i n 45 degree weather for a hal f
hour waiting for your baggage. But that's what happened and there were many
complaints and comparisons to the New York Marathon, which, with three times
as many r unner s, i s much mor e wel l or gani zed.
Three TRRC members distinguished themselves by nishing under three hours:
Nei l Wheaton, 2:29; Gary Struve, 2:50; Bob Hermesch, 2:58. Speci al
recognition goes to Neil, who nished 72nd overall. They were followed by
Mike Daley, 3:03; Dan Moffatt, 3:15; Melanie Benvenue, 3:35; Howie Solow,
3: 47, Rudy Ei nhor n, 3: 53.
Later that evening, as we feasted on wine and lobster at Jimmy's Harborside,
Howie Solow had the most interesting "war story" of the day. He lost his
nishers medal, stood in the rain for an hour asking for a medal, somehow
persuading a volunteer to pick up his baggage. He ended up in the medical
t ent , as r i gor mor t i s does s t ar t t o s et i n when s t andi ng ar ound i n t hos e

Howie's medal was found in the frozen yogurt where he'd dropped it! (You
