OP E N T E A M 2 ND AT S NOWF L A K E 4
Febniary 6th, TRRC's open team, organized by Steve Calidonna, ran off with the second
place medals in this annual NYRRC event. The race was well named for the weather this year,
3-4 inches of snow was falling, as our team traversed through the hills of Central Park. But in
spite of the slippery conditions, excellent times where turned in by:

The 1993 TRRC Season is off and running (but of course)
and soon we can put the Gore-Tex and gloves in the attic,
grab a towel and water bottle, and head for the track. If all
your New Years' running resolutions have not already been
deferred to '94, and you're still working toward a PR year,
then soon is the time.
Scott Abercrombie representing the 40-49 masters (see
Nick Caswell's article), and Steve Calidonna with the mens
open, have been enthusiastically organizing their respective
TRRC running teams. If you want to join these not-Just-for-
speedsters give him a call. We would also love to see a give-
her-a-call team (Alyssa, Susan, Margie?) or a 50's plus (Jack,
Rich, Mellow-man?) Teams are to stimulate TRRC
camaraderie at selected away races. If we win (as a team)
great! But the purpose is to get more members involved.
Aer Lingus is back! Free tickets for two to Ireland. If
this is the rst you are hearing about the "tickets" or you're
not signed up yet, stop reading! Turn to the revised St.
Patrick's Day race application, ll it out - mail it in - it's a
rafe folks, for ALL race participants (2m or lOK) with a
lottO'bettero chance of winning, but you still have
to be-in-it, to-win-it, but "Hey-you-never-know." Be
T h e r e !
The Pump House Gang is averaging 25 runners of
every ability but there may be room for just one more.
You! If you get out of bed and get there on Saturday
morning by 7:30 AM, we promise, The-Gang will do the
rest. By the time you fully wake up you'll be kickin' up
your heels into the second water stop.
Thanks for making the transition to Teatown so
easy. I think we're going to enjoy this place. And
spec/thanks to Robi (culinary delights) and Jimmy
(fabulous re) and all you meetin'-goin'-members (for
being there). Hey, you want in - come on out - second
Wednesday of every month (pin up the ofcial TRRC
calendar and circle the date).
Please read the article on Grand Prix scoring
qualiffcations, and welcome to our new advertiser and
my new friend Juan Keys (see "Magic ").
See ya' out there, Fredy Low

TRRC schedule has over 25 races. The
success of these races relies heavily on the
volunteer efforts of its members. These
volunteer activities provide an opportunity to
meet a number of other club members and
learn something about the inner workings of
the club, or just to enjoy the feeling that
comes from giving something back to the
sport that has been very good to most of us.
If you would like to help at any of our
upcoming events, please write to Vincent
Juliano, Volunteer Coordinator, TRRC PO
Box 99, Baldwin Place, NY 10505 or call at
245-3472. THANKS!

My Search for a Stress Buster or What's a Social Worker to Do when Stress
Hits? by Martha Alvarez-Cullen, C.5.W.
As an urban school social worker for over 10 years, and a mother of two
young children I have been searching for avenues to help me get through my
work day and my family ordeals. I discovered that running was the ultimate
st r ess bust er f or me.
it al) began two years ago when I was watching the New York City Marathon
on television. There my spirit was standing next to Greta Weitz and
approximatelly 2S Thousand runners, i felt their excitement, fear, hopes
for a best time, thinking about the 10th mile, 15th mile, etc. Two weeks
later I entered a sports shop and purchased my rst running shoes.
I al5jO went to the library and researched on running techniques, how to start
a r^iTilng program, diet, exercise, stretching. I also consulted with my
doctor about my physical condition and received his OK.
All trie background work was done now to make the time necessary for
running. As a school social worker I am due at work at 8.00 a.m. therefore I
needed to nd time early in the morning to actually follow up. 1 got up at
5:15 am. and took that rst step. It was the stars, the silence of the early
morning, the sound of my running shoes, my breath, my thoughts and the
road It was such a peaceful feeling that I recognized It as my stress buster.
My rst mile was difcult although not Impossible. I walked, jogged,
walked again and so on. Several months later In my brave social work spirit
I entered the Mother's Day 5K Race. What a terric lift. Go! MOM Go! I heard.
Then my rst 10K The ADVIL Mini-Marathon In Central Park. Running
alongside runners like Judy 5t. Hillare, Liz McCoulghlin. My nish time was
1:25:04. I guess with nothing to compare It with I did great! and fealt great!
whicb was rny original motivation for running. The time on my last 10K was
57:18, some difference and a trememdous sense of accomplishment.
Partlcuiating In races became an integral part of my running program. On a
brave August morning i also participated In my rst Biathlon sponsored by
the Tacomc Road Runners Club, (of which 1 am now a proud member). It
consisted of a 3 mile race and 1/2 mile swim. Very proudly (specially since
1 am not a swimmer)! nished last with a time of 58:35.
The goal for a runner is to run the prestigious New York City Marathon, this
r*as become the goal for me. However as a cautious and realistic runner I
w;3nt to try half marathons rst. I plan to run the Women's 1/2 marathon.
13.1 miles In October '93 and If possible the granddaddy in November "94,
one year short of my 40th Birthday.
Running has done wonders In my life, I will keep on hitting the pavement
until 1 m 84. After all 1 am not running to win, but to feel GOOD.

1992 Taconic Masters Cross Country
by Bob Hermesch
1992 proved to be a very ne year for our masters contingent. Our second place overall showing at the
International X-C event in Boston back in March was a harbinger of yet further successes in store while taking
on some lessons in humility along the way.
Excitement and emotion continued over the road racing season this spring and summer with an eye
towards the fall x-c competitions. From Boston's Franklin Park to New York's Van Cortlandt Park Taconic was
well represented.
We had the opportunity to compete twice in Boston. Our second trip this past November for the USA
TAG Nat'l. Masters 8K Champ, served as a humbling experience. After a fantastic 2nd place behind Greater
Lowell RR in late March we had to settle for 8th this time around! This result was not due to a general poor
team performance (we all raced as best we could) but rather from many impressive times -om some very strong
teams from New England and elsewhere.
At Van Cortlandt our team won top honors at the MAC 5K, MAC lOK and the RRCA Age Group X-C
Champ. Our season ended with a 2nd pi nish (behind Hartford TC) at the Nat'l Masters 15K Champ. This nal
event comprising three tortuous circuits through the meadows and over the hilly and rocky dirt trails of this
historic course at Van Cort was contested by over 10 squads.
The 1992 season has laid the blueprint for this year's races and all the battles that are yet to be won. all
our masters competitors will be needed. Our depth and not any individual has been the key to Taconic's
successes. Team size is not limited in many of these races. We urge all of you to participate.

Expanding TRRC Master Teams
Last year, our Masters Team nished in a tie for third in the
NYRRC st andi ngs. We woul d l i ke t o i mpr ove t hi s by ent er i ng a
Masters Team in as many club team races as possible (see schedule).
To do this, we need to identify every TRRC'er 40 and over who would
like to participate and be notied of the upcoming races. With the
exception of a few relay races, ability is neither a prerequisite
nor a concern. If you would enjoy racing with our Masters Team
(even if only once in a while), print your name below and return it

Dear Mr. President (Dear Bill):
You and I have a number of things in common; we were both recently elected to our
respective ofces, we both live and work in the White House, only mine has blue shutters, and
we both choose running as a daily diet to keep in shape.
Taconic Road Runners Club is a twenty-year old, 600 member club in the beautiful
Hudson Valley, Westchester County, New York. Our schedule has approximately 25 road races
of every distance, from a one miler to the 50K Sybil Ludington ultra marathon.
TRRC races are scenic, often challenging, but always well worth the time. We have an
established reputation in the running community for well-managed events, with our own special
brand of camaraderie.
We appreciate what your running does for "our" sport and in recognition of this, I
hereby make you an honorary member of Taconic Road Runners Club. Enclosed is your ID
card and ofcial TRRC t-shirt and beer mug. This membership entitles you to free entry in all
Taconic-sponsored races, to which you now have an open invitation.
Let me know when you're going to be in the New York area, or maybe we could just
get together for a loop when I'm in Washington.
Sincerely,
Fr ed Loehf el m,
