ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader,
The Shahin application to upgrade our current, decrepit service
station at the entrance to Aldinga to a massive, On The Run
complex has become a very devisive issue in the community.
The Development Application Panel rejected the application
because it is inappropriate in a historic township zone. This zoning
was set up to try and preserve some oI our rapidly disappearing
heritage. Obviously many newer residents are unaware oI the
importance oI the township in our history. I wonder iI they realise
that the post oIIice Irom which the telegraph messages were sent
during the Star Of Greece wreck disaster is still there in the town?
Do they stop and wonder why a town the size oI Aldinga had two
hotels, one oI which is beautiIully restored right alongside the
proposed ultra-modern commercial development? Are they aware
that the original blacksmith shop and undertaker, strategically
located on the junction oI the original South Road with Old Coach
Road is still largely there Ior all to see along with the original
Adelaide Bank? Do they realise that the Uniting Church cemetery
has a grave Ior the souls who lost their lives in the Star Of Greece
tragedy?
Because oI this zoning, existing businesses are restricted in their
construction and signage to retain the ambience oI the historic
township. What a slap in the Iace to them iI the development is
allowed to go ahead. Council landscaping and beautiIication plans
Ior the town, which have been subject to local consultation, are
also based on enhancing its heritage value. What consultation
rights have we been given by the Shahin corporation?
The On The Run owners are not the least bit interested in any of
this. They see it as a way to make more money Irom the passing
trade on South Road.
Surely this development would generate extra employment in an
area where it is sadly lacking, but what Iacilities are they oIIering
that we do not already have?
The Southern Community Coalition and Friends oI Port Willunga,
along with all the other individuals who objected to this proposal,
are not objecting to the provision oI the Iacility and are not anti-
development but strongly pointing out that it is IN THE WRONG
LOCATION.
I Iear the residents who started the current petition to approve the
application are looking at one side oI the picture. Land on the
corner oI Aldinga Beach Road, which is due to be released, would
be much more suitable Ior a development like this Irom both a
zoning and access perspective, where there is room to incorporate
it into the re-construction oI the road and corner.
I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President & Editor

JULIE

Witch way to run?

What would you think iI you saw a young lady run
terriIied Irom a church meeting in full witchs gear -
eyes and everything else black, except the red lips?

It was just a normal service. But Julie Ireaked out.
Probably, she just wasnt used to love and acceptance.

She had been a street kid in Hindley Street with skin
heads, rockers; then warlocks and witches Ior Iriends. Her
coven liIe (with all the crystal balls, runes and tarot cards
etc.,) led her to even heavier drinking and more serious
drug abuse. She would awake some mornings with visible
evidence oI bites and scratches on her body. Demons are
very real she says.

Julie had missed the normal bonding with her army
parents, in Singapore during the Vietnam War. And later
in Australia, the disruption to her schooling (due to the
continual army re-postings), plus various personal dramas
and Ioster parents, gave her an acute sense oI
disorientation, rejection and isolation. She decided not to
try to make school Iriends because she knew she would
have to leave them behind.

Years later, the popular LeIt Behind series became the
catalyst for her change. Its about the Rapture, when Jesus
comes back Ior his believers, and everyone else is leIt
behind to Iace the great tribulation. AIter watching the
video, Julie did what she knew she had to do and long
story short is now the receptionist Ior the church she ran
away Irom, relocated in Hackham.

William George Field
(From William George Field R.N. Out From Lights
Shadow by Dr. Jeff Nicholas.)
(This was sent in bv a reader, but I have lost track of who
it was to acknowledge them - mv apologies to that person.
Ed)
Born in Devon, England 1807, William Field joined the
Royal Navy in 1819. He passed the Lieutenant exam in
1826. He was commissioned in 1832. He served in the
gunship Ocean and was made Lieutenant oI the Flagship
H.M.S. Howe in 1835. Field became First OIIicer oI the
brig Rapid, the survey vessel Ior the South Australia
Commissioners; retiring Irom the Royal Navy on halI pay
in 1890 and proceeded to South Australia with Colonel
William Light with a promise oI command oI the Rapid
on arrival at Kangaroo Island.

He discovered the river Onkaparinga (Col. Light called
this Fields River.)
He was on the Iirst party to see the River Torrens. (Sept
1836)
He laid down the Iirst buoys in the Port River (23 Nov)
He escorted Governor Hindmarsh to view the new (Old)
Port oI which he was so proud.

Field took the Rapid on several trips to other colonies Ior
supplies over the next Iew years. Many livestock were
lost this way and an overland stock route became
imperative. Field was one oI the Iirst to propose this. He
was later the Iirst South Australian to arrive with cattle
Irom NSW (1838).

In 1837 Field was allocated land in Gouger, Wright,
Gilbert and HaliIax Streets during the town survey, plus
two parcels oI land in North Adelaide in Archer Street
and Brougham Place.
He took the Iirst export produce Irom the colony (150
gallons oI whale oil) to England in the Rapid in
November 1837.
He convinced some nearby crewmen to help him rescue 2
sailors who were in danger in exceedingly bad weather,
by manning a small boat, rowing to them and bringing
them saIely back to the pier.
He was later awarded a medal Ior bravery, Ior this and
other instances where he had saved lives.

From 1838 on, Field and his brother made several
overland droving trips with cattle. In 1840 however,
droving a large Ilock oI sheep, Henry Inman was speared
by Aborigines, who had also been killing some oI the
sheep Ior Iood, while the Ilock passed through their
territory. Previous overland droves had been cattle. Field
organised a retaliatory party. Their 14 horsemen were
conIronted by 200 Aboriginal warriors and although
Iield mortally shot the leader, he and his horse, along with
others, were injured by spears and the party retreated,
lucky not to lose their lives.

Captain Field, as he had become known, settled down
to mixed Iarming at Mt. Barker He was made responsible
Ior the Mt. Barker Agricultural reports to the Governor
and was highly regarded by the local community.

Field married in 1841 at Yankalilla (They lived on 2 x 80
acres oI leased Aboriginal reserve land at Hay Flat.) Field
then bought 40 acres Ireehold overlooking the previous
160 acres extending Irom Yankalilla creek to Waitpinga
along the Parawa Range in 1845). He was made a JP and
responsible Ior the Yankalilla Agricultural reports to the
Governor. The home he built there, (Adderbury Cottage)
was regarded as imposing by colonial standards.

He died oI tuberculosis (as did Colonel Light) in 1850.
Caleb Lovelock. (source unknown)

For 51 years a resident oI Aldinga, Mr. Caleb Love-lock
has at all times evinced a marked interest
in all branches oI local activities. He has served the
District Council Ior the past eight years as Chairman.
Mr. Lovelock was appointed a Justice oI the Peace in
August, 1921, and is Chairman oI the local Agricultural
Bureau, Vice-President oI the Willunga Agricultural
Society,' Trustee oI the Aldinga Institute, and Ior a time
was Chairman oI the local Repatriation and Soldiers'
Me-morial Committees. Also he is Trustee oI the local
Methodist Church.

Learn how to protect
your local environment

South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise Ieaturing
more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and
460 bird species.
Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per
cent oI our native bushland has been lost in some areas and
with it, many plant, animal and bird species.
Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all
walks oI liIe the opportunity to help preserve what little we
have left by learning how to restore and protect our States
native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops.
At the workshop, participants will learn:
why the bush needs your help;
the best strategies Ior restoring ecological processes;
minimal disturbance techniques;
how to work saIely in the bush;
how you can get involved as a Bush For LiIe volunteer
Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through
the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques
to get native plants regenerating and how to deIeat invasive
weeds. Bush For LiIe also holds advanced workshops which
cover topics such as native plant and grass identiIication,
advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and
more.
Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the
longer term. They can participate in small group activities
every now and then, adopt a bushland site oI their own or join
our Bush Action Team.

Aldinga Beach 34 appliance is a urban/rural appliance. 34
is our main appliance Ior bushIires and acts as a backup
appliance to our 34P Ior house & structure Iires, providing
extra crew, hoses, breathing apparatus and water. The open
crew deck on the rear oI 34 allows Aldinga Beach crew to
Iight running grass Iires. The crew deck is Iitted with two
38 size hoses and a monitor nozzle. The monitor is a high
powered nozzle that produces a very strong stream oI wa-
ter (much stronger than a normal Iire Iighting hose) which
is very handy when we need water to reach inaccessible
areas eg. burning trees that cannot be reached by Ioot or by
the water Irom our regular hoses. The pump can also be
controlled Irom the crew deck enabling crews to adjust the
pressure oI the water without having to leave the crew
deck. At the rear oI this appliance are two side lines (hose
reel & nozzle setup) one on each side oI the truck. Each
side line is 60m in length and they are used by crew to
Iight slower moving Iires on Ioot. Side lines are also used
Ior "Blacking out". This involves moving through Iire aI-
Iected areas (Once the main Iire has been controlled) en-
suring Iire is Iully extinguished and won't re-ignite.
At times Aldinga Beach 34 and crew can be sent to other
areas to assist with major Iires. Crews can be away Ior up
to 5 days. Occasionally during larger incidents change over
crews can be also be sent. This year Aldinga Beach CFS
volunteers along with our 34 appliance attended Iires at
Delamere, Bangor, Eden Valley and also a number oI Iires
here at home including a Iire in the Aldinga Scrub and a
Iire on the Sellicks Beach Foreshore on New Years Eve.

Southern hairy-nosed
wombats
Did you know that southern hairy-nosed wombats
are the faunal emblem for South Australia? Many
years ago, they were widespread throughout South
Australia but sadly they are no longer found in
Aldinga.
Dr Peter Clements from the Natural History Society
of South Australia will be the
special guest speaker at our
June meeting. Peter will tell us
all about the history of this

Not Firing On All Four Cylinders?
Do you struggle through the day Ieeling Iatigued, in pain or
just plain Ied up? II you wake up in the morning with
exhaustion, experience cramping or muscular aches, pains,
backaches or headaches your body may be crying out Ior
more magnesium. A magnesium deIiciency may cause
symptoms and disorders aIIecting nerves, muscles, bones, the
cardiovascular system and metabolism. Stress can also
increase the bodys demand of magnesium, leaving you
depleted and with lower reserves oI this important mineral.
Magnesium the Wonder Mineral
Magnesium is an essential mineral which is vital Ior
producing energy to Iire every cell in your body, so you
Iunction at your best. When you are deIicient in
magnesium, it can exacerbate Ieelings oI exhaustion and
heighten the intensity oI pain and inIlammation. II you have
ever suIIered Irom symptoms oI pain, muscular cramps,
headaches, Iatigue or even Iibromyalgia, you may have
increased requirements Ior magnesium. It plays a key role in
preventi ng i nsuli n dysregulation and t ype 2
diabetes.
Pain, Pain Go Away!
II you experience pain and tenderness, magnesium is your
mineral. Whether you have muscle soreness aIter exercise, a
headache aIter a long hard day at work, period pain, or are
suIIering Irom the common chronic pain syndrome,
Iibromyalgia, magnesium can help you manage your pain.
This important mineral also helps your muscles to relax, so
they are not tense, stiII and angry. Magnesium plays a role in
moving Iluid into the cells oI all oI your tissues, to make sure
they are Iully hydrated in order to Iunction optimally.
Magnesium deIiciency can lead to more inIlammation in the
body, causing more pain; another good reminder to maintain
your magnesium levels.

Early signs oI magnesium deIiciency may include headaches,
loss oI appetite, nausea, and vomiting, and Iatigue or
weakness. However, ongoing magnesium deIiciency can lead
to Iar more serious symptoms such as:
Abnormal heart rhythms and coronary spasms
Muscle cramps and contractions
Seizures
Numbness and tingling
Personality changes

Inadequate magnesium intake creates a vicious cycle oI low
magnesium levels in your body, elevated insulin and blood
glucose levels, and excess loss oI magnesium in your urine

The best source oI magnesium is whole, organic Ioods,
especially dark green leaIy vegetables; other good sources
include seaweed, dried pumpkin seeds, unsweetened
cocoa, Ilaxseed, almond butter, and whey

Senior Health
For many people, the years creep by and our pets have aged
beIore we realise it. This ageing process is important because
many diseases in both dogs and cats will appear Irom the age
oI 7 years and onwards. For every one human year dogs age 7
years, and cats 5 years meaning at 7-years-old they are
equivalent to a 50-year-old person the age most oI us begin
to have more Irequent health checks!

Senior Health Monitoring why is it important?
Many diseases in older dogs and cats will progress rapidly
because oI the Iaster ageing process. This means that a 12-
monthly health check may not be Irequent enough Ior the
early identiIication oI disease conditions.
Many diseases can be present without initially causing
outward symptoms in your pet recognition oI these
conditions beIore they do cause more serious health concerns
is vital. The best way to accomplish this is via regular health
examinations; and Ior the older pet we recommend this
happen every 6 months.
Common diseases we see in the older pet are: arthritis;
dementia; dental, heart, kidney and liver disease; among many
others.

So what does monitoring involve?
Your senior canine or Ieline Iriend needs a thorough physical
examination every 6 months. At this senior check-up, we
assess the oral cavity (for dental disease), examine your pets
eyes and ears, their chest is examined (to check Ior lung or
heart changes) and the abdomen is thoroughly palpated to
check Ior internal organ change or lumps/masses. The lymph
nodes, core body temperature and gum colour are also
checked. We assess skin health, joint health and the nails.
At every second check-up (i.e. 12 monthly) we will run blood
and urine tests to assess internal organ Iunction (eg kidneys,
liver, hormonal diseases such as diabetes and so on) and to
check the white and red blood cell levels.
This allows Ior early diagnosis, discussion, and treatment oI
any conditions present which can lead to an improved
prognosis Ior the long-term outcome, and a better quality oI
liIe Ior your ageing pet.

How do you get started?
All senior health consults will be 30 minutes in length to
allow Ior a thorough exam and discussion oI any problems
Iound.
Senior Pet Blood Tests (including a urinalysis) are oIIered at a
discounted rate (over $50 in savings compared to normal
laboratory Iees).

AIdinga Market moves for the winter
season
From May 25th onwards the original and
best Aldinga Bay Market will be held at an
exciting new location The Aldinga
Institute, which is located on Old Coach
Road at Aldinga, next to the Aldinga Hotel.
As we are all well aware the weather in
Aldinga in winter is very inclement so our
stall holders were very keen to Iind a cosy
warm place to continue trading throughout
the year. The Aldinga Institute management
came to the rescue. The interior oI the
Institute which is also heated can
accommodate approx 30 stalls and there is also lots oI space
outside on the northern sheltered side oI the Hall, Ior more
stalls.
The Aldinga Bay Market Committee decided that this was the
best option open to us, to enable us to continue this popular
market through the winter months. This is an exciting new
stage Ior the Market. The Aldinga Business and Tourism
Association wishes to thank Aldinga Central Management who
very generously gave the ABBTA a Iree lease to hold the
Market on their property which was integral to giving liIe to the
Market we now enjoy.
We will still have the regular Iavourites; Iace painter, coIIee,
BBQ, cupcakes olives oils and other Iine Ioods. The opening
hours are 9am 2pm on the Iourth Sunday oI the Month.
We invite you to come and enjoy our cosy new venue which
will undoubtedly attract many more interesting traders as well.

The Editor,
Dear Sir,
I was pleased to see my garden paths all topsy-turvy with
holes oI varying depth and width. This was no outer-
space visitation. This was clear sign that my random
visitor oI many years, a charming and oIten amusing
echidna was still very much alive and doing the rounds
despite an increase in Iences and yapping dogs.

His 'misdemeanours' in search oI termites include turning
over substantial logs and stones, in the course oI which I
have been able to move within a bootlength oI my spiky
visitor, whose concentration on his Ioody pursuit is total.
"By all means watch but do not distract me, this is a
matter oI liIe and death".

Stay with it kiddy, glad to see you again.

Robb Mack
Aldinga Beach

Thanks Robb.
In the last few vears our vard and garden have been
blissfullv bereft of snails. The inhabiting (and
reproducing) blue tongues in our garden seem to like our
strawberries fust as much however, and blissfullv munch
awav, looking at us frowning at them. Bird netting is
obviouslv no deterrent. - Ed

A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking

A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris

Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a

The doctor said, ' didn't say that.. said, 'You've got

Uniting Communities Family Mental Health Support Service (FMHSS) is an early intervention and prevention program

development oI children and young people. It aims to enhance wellbeing and prevent and reduce incidence oI mental

Iamily resources and develop a greater sense oI connection to their community. This program is speciIically Ior children
and young people aged 0-18 years and their Iamilies. Diagnosis oI a mental health issue is not required and neither is a

Iinancial issues and moving house. You may have noticed disturbed sleep; over-eating or not eating; changes in
behaviour withdrawal or angry outbursts; an outpouring oI emotions, crying, extra clingy behaviour; school issues or
changes in peer group. The FMHSS program provides short and longer term services. These include individual
counselling Ior the child or young person in conjunction with Iamily; case management; the development oI a Family
Action Plan and practical in home support eg assistance with school attendance; provision oI inIormation, reIerral and
support in accessing services; education and group work, community development and building meaningIul networks.

The Family Mental Health Support Service focuses on the child or young persons wellbeing; provides practical
assistance; conducts home visits; supports children, young people and their Iamilies to develop the skills needed to
navigate everyday liIe. FMHSS is a respectIul and conIidential service. Since the commencement oI 2014, FMHSS
team members have been working within the Aldinga and Sellicks community to engage with children, young people
and their Iamilies through Iree activity sessions and community engagement events
