Secure assembly with channels HALFEN
HALFEN bolts can be inserted at any point along the channel and
fixed by turning through 90 and then tighten the nut. At the
channel ends, bolts should not be located beyond the last anchor
(= 2,5 cm from the channel end); the anchor positions of bolt
anchors are visible from inside the channel slot.
Filler easy to remove
To prevent an infill of concrete, cast-in channels are filled
with foam. Depending on the application two different fillers are
available (see page 8).
After removal of the shuttering the filler can be easily removed using
a suitable tool (see instructions page 8).
HALFEN
Selection criteria
In addition to the normal hot dip galvanised, HALFEN cast-in
channels are also supplied in stainless steel for applications requiring
increased corrosion resistance.
When selecting channels, officially approved types HTA and
HZA are recommended. These are available with a variety of profiles
(see pages 10 - 22) and anchor designs (see page 28).
HALFEN
HALFEN cast-in channels supplied with bolt anchors or welded an-
chors are appoved by the German construction materials supervisory
board (DIBt) for load bearing structures:
- type HTA: Approval No. Z-21.4-34, dated 02. 08. 2004,
- type HZA 41/22: Approval No. Z-21.4-145, dated 14. 03. 2001,
HALFEN channels are supplied ready to use complete with polystyre-
ne filler and nail holes. They are easy to fix by simply nailing to the
timber formwork.
- type HZA Dynagrip: Approval No. Z-21.4-1691, dated 23.11.2005.
To ensure correct installation of the bolt the position of the notch
at the end of the shank should be checked. The notch must be
transverse to the channel direction.
If the channel is recessed from the face of the concrete e.g. due to
insufficient nailing to the formwork or weak formwork, packing
shims (see page 30) should be used over the face of the channel
before fixing any other components.
A plate washer should always be used under the nut when fixing di-
rect to the face of the channel.
Lock washers type SIC (page 37) provide additional security against
turning of the bolt head. Nuts should be tightened to the torque va-
lues as stated for the HALFEN bolts (pages 11 - 23 and 33).
Fire protection
HALFEN channels type HTA and HZA Dynagrip in combination with
HALFEN bolts are approved for application in concrete structures
exposed to fire. The allowable loads, depending on the size of bolt,
are layed down in the approval certificates for a fire resistance
duration of 60 minutes (class F60) and of 90 minutes (class F90), see
approval no. Z-21.4-34 for HALFEN channels type HTA and approval
no. Z-21.4-1691 HZA Dynagrip). for HALFEN channels type

HALFEN bolts for increased security during assembly : The new S - shape of the head provides addi-
tional security for correct locking of the bolt inside the HALFEN channel, avoiding any risk of turning
during assembly, even when differing profile widths occur due to manufacturing tolerances. During
the period of change to the new bolt shape both bolt types are supplied. Patents pending.
All HALFEN bolts type HS, HSR and HZS are supplied with hexagonal nuts.

Fillers in HALFEN Channels
The has been
the standard for HALFEN channels for
many years. On countless projects
around the world, it has provided pro-
tection against ingress of concrete
grout into the channel. The polystyre-
ne is dense and fills the channel com-
pletely, even between the lips. After
striking the formwork, removal of the
filler is simply done using an appro-
priate tool .
Note: Due to the production process,
the polystyrene bead filler may not be
completely tight at both ends of the
channel, notably in the larger profiles.
However this does not affect the use-
able length of the channel, since
HALFENT-head bolts should not be
located beyond the last anchor
(=2,5cm from the channel end, see
also p.5).
polystyrene bead filler
Combination strip filler is used if
HALFEN channels are required to be
quickly cleared of filler, after removing
the formwork, HALFEN supplies
channels with combination strip filler
at a small extra charge.
Care should be taken to ensure that the correct type of
HALFEN channel, as specified on the drawing (channel size,
material finish, anchor type, length) is adequately fixed to the
formwork and in the required position, so that it cannot be
displaced when pouring and compacting the concrete.
This ensures that after removal of the formwork the channel
face is flush with the concrete surface. Fix to timber form-
work with staples or nails. For fixing stainless steel HALFEN
channels stainless steel nails type ENA 28/65 are available to
order. Fix to steel forms with bolts, dowels etc. (see below).
Nail through the nail holes in the
back of the channel onto the tim-
ber form. When using stainless
steel HALFEN channel we recom-
mend using stainless steel wire
nails, available to order, in size
28/65.
Order code: ENA

Order code: KRA
Using HALFEN bolts through the
steel form. (Press bolt head into
the channel filler)
To help preventing the ingress of con-
crete grout, HALFEN channels are
supplied with filler.
Two types are available depending on
the application.
After striking the formwork the combinati-
on strip filler is simply pulled out of the
channel. In order to avoid rupture of the
strip filler, an appropriate tool should be
used as shown.

Thread:
A4 = material 1.4571/ 1.4401 (grade A4) ; A2 = material
1.4301 (grade A2). Stainless steel channels ran-
ging from HTA 28/15 to HTA54/33 and HZA 41/22 have
generally bolt anchors made in stainless steel. HALFEN
channels HTA 72/48 and 72/49 are only supplied with
mild steel grade St37-2 anchors, anchor design A = wel-
ded.
The load capacities quoted correspond to official appro-
val. For distances between load points and allow. loads in
concrete B35: see page 24.
Not part of the official approval. Reduced allow. loads as
indicated (or consult HALFEN). Order code: . . / . .
Values have been calculated according to the CC-
procedure.
Anchor design: A = welded anchor ( - anchor); B = bolt
anchor, see also page 28. Channels will be delivered as
available unless specified on the order.
Where simultaneous loading occurs, in both pull out and
transverse shear or longitudinal shear parallel to the chan-
nel axis, the resultant load should not exceed the value of
F = 5 kN for single loads or F = 3,5 kN for load pairs.
Load transmission only by frictional resistance. For load
bearing constructions with forces in longitudinal direction
channels type HZA in connection with toothed
T-head bolts HZS or hot rolled channels
in connection with nibbed HSR bolts should be used.

Minimum dimensions [cm]
concrete the minimum spacings should be increased by 30%.
Dimensions in brackets apply when actual a 2 x allow.a .
Minimum structural component width b = 2 x a needed for
the channel to fit.
The thickness of the concrete depends of the length of the
anchor and the necessary concrete cover "c" in accordance
with DIN 1045. Anchor lengths in brackets for HTA 38/17
and 28/15 only apply for special versions with welded
anchors see page 26 for anchor dimensions.
Only applicable for direct pull out loads and for HZA channel,
when loaded in the longitudinal direction of the channel.
For pull out loads at an angle of 45 or shear loads acting
towards the edge of the concrete reinforcement is required if
the edge distance is between 75 and 100 mm (see page 26).

r r
r
r r
For shear loads acting away from the edge of the concrete
the distance a may be reduced to 0,5a or 5cm mini-
mum, provided reinforcement is fitted as shown in the
diagram on page 26.
Concrete grades:
e.g. B 25 = concrete strength
w
= 25N/mm b

- When dimensioning acc. to DIN 1045-1:2001-7, sect. 1

"Dimensioning and construction" the dimensioning value
of the allowable load for profile and channel are to be put
as follows:
- The admissible bolt load acc. to tables on pages 11 - 23
must not be exceeded.
Allowable loads in concrete B 35 (i.e. concrete strength
35 N/mm) are only permitted when additional crack
prevention reinforcement (minimum 8mm bars grade
BSt 500 S around each HTA anchor) or transversal pressure
is used.
When fixing in concrete B15 (i.e. concrete strength =
15 N/mm) the allowable loads for B25 should be reduced
by the factor of 0,7 and in structural lightweight concrete
LB25 (expanded clay) by the factor of 0,67.
Special channel type 38/17 K with reduced anchor spacing
of 200 mm, max. point load F =7,0kN.
HZA 41/22 used in conjunction with HZS41/22: allowable
load in the longitudinal direction of the channel 5kN
(see also page 17).
The minimum spacings given in the table apply to standard
reinforced concrete of all grades B25. For unreinforced

When using channels HTA 28/15, 38/17, 40/22 and 40/25 the end edge dis-
tance as given in the table on page 27 can be reduced for applications in slender rein-
forced concrete columns, provided two additional links (fig.3) are installed immediately
above and below the length of HTA channel.
The distance from the edge of the concrete column to the centre of the anchor
must be at least 42 mm. (Details as given in Test report No. II 4 - 14 426 of the FMPA
Baden - Wrttemberg dated 26.10.1984).

HALFEN CAST-IN CHANNELS
Shock Loads
Allow. shock loads for
HALFEN cast-in channels with
anchors at 250mm centres,
for both pull out and shear
loads in either along or across
the channel length
When load capacities for HALFEN bolt and HALFEN channel are different values the lower value is to be used
Applicable for channel type HTA-A 50/30 with welded - anchors. I
For short lengths L = 100 - 250 mm and load pair combinations a value that is three times the
static load as given on page 26 (values according to official approval DIBt) can be used.

The following conditions must be observed:
In accordance with certifications
of the
German Authority for Civil Protection.
HALFEN cast-in channels provide safe
fixings for components subject to
shock loading e.g. when used in shel-
ter construction.
25/03 dated 25.09.03 (HTA) and
26/03 dated 29.09.03 (HZA)
1) Minimum structural component dimensions, centre spacings and edge distan-
ces as detailed in the official approval (see page 27) must be adhered to.
2) For standard applications (normal operating live and dead loads) the loads defi-
ned in the DIBt Approval Certificate apply (see also tables page 26). When com-
ponents are statically loaded along the channel length, toothed channels type
HZA should be specified instead of type HTA.

HALFEN brick ties can be inserted at
any position along the channel and
finally located at the required centres
by simply turning through 90 before
bedding into the mortar. The perfora-
tions in the brick ties are designed to
improve the bond to the mortar.
HALFEN brickwork restraint systems
are designed to tie all masonry, both
wall connections (fig.1) and external
cladding masonry (fig.2) to load bea-
ring concrete walls and columns.
Because of the sliding capability of
the brick ties within the channels the
risk of the masonry cracking is greatly
reduced.

The use of brick tie debond sleeves
Type provides a means for
allowing movement in the longitu-
dinal direction of the tie. Ideal for use
when tying long masonry walls to
structural concrete elements or when
tying in large span infill walls to floor
slabs, where debond sleeves allow faci-
lity of movement and thus help to
prevent cracking.
The debond sleeves can easily be fit to
brick ties type ML with cross section
of 26 x 3 mm.

Fixing profiled metal sheeting to HTU using self drilling screws.
HTU, anchor type D
The ideal technical solution to fixing profiled metal
sheets to concrete using HALFEN sheet fixing channels
type HTU and self-drilling screws has now become an
industry standard for this detail.
Fixing to cast-in HTU channels with self - drilling screws Installation and fixing to formwork
The channel type HTU is designed for casting in flush to the
surface of concrete elements. When cast into the top sur-
face it is recommended that the concrete surface be trowel-
led smooth and sloping slightly towards the outer edge.
This should ensure that the profiled metal sheets lie direct
onto the HTU channel.
If, however, the manufacturer of the profiled metal sheets
requires an overall bearing surface width of more than 60
mm, this can be achieved by flush channel installation and a
smooth, even concrete surface. Care should be taken to
ensure the installation is horizontal, correctly aligned and
centrally positioned in the concrete element. A 20 mm
wide joint between abutting channel ends is recommended.
The self - drilling screw is fitted to the powered screwdriver
and secured in one operation without the need to drill a
pilot hole first. Even the four fold overlap at joints does not
present a problem for the screw. Use a powered screwdriver
with approx. 1500 rpm and hexagonal socket size 10. The
appropriate tools for the actual screws are normally available
from the screw supplier.
Fixing of the profiled metal sheeting must be done within
the central third of the channel width and the screw must be
at least 25 mm away from the end of the channel.
Screw fixing the profiled metal sheeting is simple and eco-
nomic, especially when self drilling screws are used.
The shape of the welded anchors ensures a safe and rigid
fixing. The Styropor filler prevents the drill or self - dril-
ling screw being damaged by the concrete or the anchor.
The rigidity of the profile ensures a flush finish with the
concrete for the profiled metal sheeting to fix to.
HTU was developed in collaboration with the Institute
for the Design and Construction of Sheet Metal Products
(I.F.B.S).
The German Construction Technology Institute in Berlin
has officially approved the profiled metal sheet fixing
channels type HTU under certificate No. Z - 21.4 - 84.

HALFEN CORNER GUARDS
System overview, Type selection
Advantages:
The 92 angle ensure a tight fit to the formwork at all times
= clean joint with the concrete and no seepage of concrete
fines between the formwork and the corner guard.
The U - shaped steel reinforcement anchors do not clash
with the corner reinforcement thus simplifying erection of
the reinforcement cage.
The steel reinforcement anchors provide optimum bond.
Cost - effective due to automated manufacture. Usually avai-
lable ex stock.

For restraining timber roof trusses to concrete beams or
reinforced concrete floors using either continuous Halfen
channel type HTA or short lengths of HALFEN channels cast
into the concrete (see page 16).
The size of HTA channel, the timber fixing strap and
the nails used will depend on the nature of the applied load
(e.g. uplift from wind).
HALFEN
The basis for calculation and measurement is taken from: 1.
DIN 1055 part 4, Aug. 86, section 6.2 and 6.3 2. DIN 1052
" Timber Structures", April 88, part 2, section 3 and 7.
The timber fixing straps can either be fitted to one side or
both sides of the timber beam.
The allowable load capacity (F ) can be taken from the
following table. If restrained at one side only the beams
must be secured against overturning (e.g. by nailing to the
timber decking).

HALFEN TIMBER FIXING
Rafter Shoe
Horizontal forces are safely transmitted back to the concrete
structure when using the officially approved HALFEN channel
type HTA.
Care should be taken during erection to ensure the serrated
washer is correctly engaged with the base plate.
The line stamped on the back of the serrated washer must be
at right angles to the direction of the slotted hole.
HALFEN rafter shoes type HFS 6/12 are used in modern tim-
ber structures to take the horizontal forces imposed by raf-
ter beams and timber roof trusses.
rafter shoes have the following advantages: HALFEN

If required, standard design calculations as well as a test report

from the Gesamthochschule Wuppertal, Laboratorium fr Bau-
stoffprfung are available on request.
The maximum allowable force in the rafter is limited by the safe
working load of the rafter shoe selected. Tests have shown an ulti-
mate load of 50 kN on average. In instances where the imposed
loads are greater than the safe working load (approx. 1/3 of ulti-
mate load) the spacing of the rafters must be reduced.
The min. edge distance ar (see table) can be reduced, when the
actual load is below the all. load (see table p. 26). The edge dis-
tance of the Halfen channels to the outer edge of the concrete
should be 170 mm.
The HALFEN channel must be cast in flush with the concrete sur-
face. If necessary shims/ washers should be used.

Reduction in design time, since only the size and position
for casting in the HALFEN channel is required.
Structurally determinate due to the pin jointed design of
the rafter shoe. Statically tested,
Test Certificate No. 3 P 30 - 26/91.
Not complicated, hence no costly and time consuming
concrete edge chamfering profiles required.
Simple, straight forward erection of the roof structures
achieved by:
a) Base plate adjustable for angle
b) Adjustable nailing straps can accommodate rafter
width from 60 - 120 mm.
c) Adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the rafter
by 15 mm.
Adjustment along the length of the channel
enables various rafter spacings to be easily accommodated.
Good corrosion protection offered by the hot dip galva-
nised finish.
