Newsletter of the Rocky Mountain Revelers: Chapter 3922

June, 2014 Volume 3, Issue 6

May campout was at KOA Lakeside in Fort Collins. We had a good
turnout. Friday night dinner was at Chili's Restaurant. We couldn't
have asked for more courteous employees, good food, and fast
service.

Saturday morning we had a lot of walkers and a three wheel bicyclist
for our CAMP. Some people enjoyed the paddle boats. Sue called
our monthly meeting to order at 1:00 pm. At 2:00 we all gathered for
the yearly miniature golf tournament. Everyone did very well, and
we had a lot of holes in one! We had a tie for the winner, Anita
Vandereyken and Ryan Krizmanic will share their name on the
trophy!!! Congratulations!

Saturday night was a spread of Italian food. Thanks to all that
contributed to make our dinner a success. After dinner, we played
Card Bingo, and had a good crowd for the game. Ryan also taught a
group how to play Texas Holdem.

Wellwe woke up Sunday morning to snow!!!!!! Lots of snow!
Mother's Day, found all the guys cooking a delicious breakfast. The
Mothers were treated to a great variety of food. A special thanks to
Bob for his amazing French toast. Our thanks and appreciation to all
the men for the fabulous food!

By the time we all headed back to our rigs to pack up and go, we had
3 to 4 inches of snow, and it was kind of slushy.
Thanks for the great Mothers day weekend.

May
Campout

Dear Revelers,

Thank you for 9 years of love, support, and friendship as fellow
FCRV campers. My little Chalet is down the road now. I can't
keep up with it any longer, so it is time to let someone else enjoy
it. I plan to continue with the club - just not camp, unless there is
a cabin to rent. Reba and I have had a good run and I have
enjoyed it VERY much. I sold it to a teacher - paid it forward a
bit, so I feel good about that. I started camping in 1979. I met my
future husband, the father of my children, on a camping trip over
Memorial Day weekend in 1982. I think 35 years of camping in
Colorado is a good place to leave it. I've had a good run - now I
am concentrating my time on our little "answered
prayer" - my granddaughter Eliana.
I will strive to "BLOOM WHERE I AM PLANTED"
Thanks for sharing my journey.

A Word from the President
What a surprise we had for our Mothers Day campout! Snow! At least
Friday and Saturday were nice. Thank you to all the men for the
wonderful breakfast. It was such a delight for all of us ladies. Thank you
for making our day so special.
Now it is truly summertime. I know this because the temperature is
hovering in the 80s and 90s. This is a fantastic time of year. The
temperature is perfect, the flowers are blooming and we are enjoying our
campouts. I got up early today and planted my petunias. Many people
planted their flowers around Mothers Day, but with the heavy rain and
hail, a lot of plants were ruined. Maybe thats why there were so many
people at OTooles when I was there at the end of May buying my flowers
to plant. Dont you just love see all the different colors and types of
flowers? To go along with spring and summer, my allergies have returned,
but luckily my allergy medicine works just fine. Just dont forget the
sunscreen and a hat if you are going to be outdoors very long.
I look forward to seeing all of you this summer at the many campouts the
group has planned. See you in June!
Your president,
Sue Wieland

A Note from the President

COLORADO CLIPS

From the Past to the Present
How Breckenridge got its Name

Did you know that the name Breckenridge has Scottish roots? The word has roots from the Northern Old English
words, bracken and rigg (ridge). Its a name describing the area that the family came from or where they owned land.
Dinnae teach yer Granny tae suck eggs!- Dont try to teach someone something they already know!

You may already be familiar with the unique story of how Breckenridge, Colorado got its name, but are you aware of
some of the fun facts that go with it? In 1859, when Breckenridge was founded, the determined people of Breckenridge
Colorado wanted their very own post office. Thinking that naming their town after a famous politician would do the
trick, they call their town Breckinridge after John C. Breckinridge (who was also the youngest ever Vice President of
the United States at 36 years old).

The flattery must have worked, short thereafter, Breckenridge gained a post office. However, a few years later the Civil
War started and Mr. Breckinridge started working for the Confederates, something the pro-Union towns people did not
like. So the citizens then changed the i to an e and it has been Breckenridge ever since. Breckenridge, a name that is
sold on thousands of tee shirts, picture frames, key chains and other souvenir items each year. This towns distinctive
history entertains many who come here.

Like most mountain towns, Breckenridge began as a mining town.
Miners used Reiling Dredge Boats to churn through glacially-laid river
gravels to expose and collect bedrock deposits. On July 23, 1887, the
largest piece of gold ever found in Colorado was discovered. Tom
Groves walked into town cradling the 13.5-pound, blanket-wrapped
bundle that gained the name Toms Baby. Three days later, the
nugget was put on a train to Denver and not seen for 85 years. In
1972, the Colorado History Museum examined gold specimens that
were deposited in a Denver bank in 1926. The specimens were indeed
Toms Baby but curiously, over five pounds were missing.

Shortly after the start of World War II the population of Breckenridge fell to 200 citizens. It
looked as though the once bustling mining town would indeed become a ghost town. In the
early 1960s solders who had returned from the war had a new idea that would launch
Breckenridge and other towns in Colorado on a new course. Coming out of the boom times
of the 1950s these pioneers saw the potential of skiing and other forms of recreation in the
Rocky Mountains. In December 1961, a lumber company called Rounds and Porter out of
Wichita, Kansas, opened the Breckenridge Ski Resort and a new-boom era began.

Choco Raspberry Burritos
4 8-9" flour tortillas
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup fresh raspberries
2 Tablespoons melted butter
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
At home, mix sugar and cinnamon and store in a
zip-lock baggie. Don't forget to bring it with you
camping.

At the campsite, stack the tortillas and wrap in a
piece of foil; grill over indirect (med-low) heat,
turning once, for about 5 minutes until they are
warm and pliable.

Sprinkle 1/4 cup each of the chocolate chips and
raspberries in the center of each tortilla; fold in the
sides and roll up (like a typical burrito). Brush rolls
with half of the melted butter. Grill burritos over
indirect (med-low)heat, turning once, for about 3
minutes, until they start to show grill marks and
the chocolate chips are melted.

Remove from heat and brush with remaining
butter. Sprinkle with stored sugar and cinnamon
mixture. Serve warm.

*These can be made at home on the grill too.
They are great with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.
Camping Humor

Solving the Snoring Problem
The guys are all at a deer camp. No one wants to room with Bob,
because he snores so badly. They decide it isnt fair to make one
of them stay with him the whole time, so they vote to take turns.
The first guy sleeps with Bob and comes to breakfast the next
morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They
say, Man, what happened to you? He says, Bob snored so
loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night.
The next night it is a different guys turn. In the morning, same
thing hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They say, Man,
what happened to you? You look awful! He says, Man, that Bob
shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night.
The third night is Freds turn. Fred is a tanned, older cowboy; a
mans man. The next morning he comes to breakfast bright-eyed
and bushy-tailed. Good morning! he says. They cant believe
it. They say, Man, what happened? Fred says, Well, we got
ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the
butt, and kissed him good night. Bob sat up and watched me all
night.

Dropped My Wallet
Two fishermen were out on the lake when one of them dropped
his wallet. As they watched the wallet float down to the depths of
the lake, a carp came along and snatched up the wallet. Soon
came another carp who stole it away and then a third joined in.
Remarked one of the fisherman,

"That's the first time I've ever seen carp-to-carp walleting."
RV Battery Facts
Overcharging occurs when you leave your RV
plugged into the built-in battery charger during storage.
The problem is many converter chargers provide a
constant charge of about 13.5 volts, which is too high
for fully charged batteries, says Mark Polk on the
Family Motor Coach Association website. Instead of
keeping the battery topped off, Polk warns this
practice actually boils off electrolytes, resulting in
severe water loss, plate corrosion, and an early death
for the batteries.
Undercharging occurs when you repeatedly fail to
fully recharge your batteries after each discharge. If a
battery is not recharged, the sulfate material that
attaches to the discharged portions of the plates begins
to harden into crystals, called sulfation, Polk explains.
Over time, this sulfate cannot be converted back into
active plate material and the battery is ruined.

Scenes and Stories
From the Road
We had a great time at Spring Fling. The four couples that attended from our chapter
were; Bob and Anna, Bob and Doris, Larrie and Julie, Colin and Gay.

On Thursday there was not much going on except
relaxation. Friday started with a special breakfast of
Bobs Famous French toast. Then lots of activities for the
rest of the day.

Friday evening even brought us a play by one of the chapters. The play was called
Sticky Fingers and featured our own Larrie as sticky fingers himself. It was lots of
fun!

Saturday started with a flag raising ceremony and then more activities then you could
count.

Saturday afternoon at Spring Fling was lots of fun. Food sales started at 11:30 then
chapter sales in the afternoon. Doris went crazy with the color wheel and got a lot of
goodies, there was also a dog show. The Saturday evening program was a band, and
it was very entertaining.

Sunday morning after church we had donuts and coffee supplied by a chapter from
Colorado Springs. Everyone was sorry when it was time to pack up and go home.
