Lesson Title: Pythagorean Theorem
Goal Students will solve problems algebraically and geometrically involving right
triangles using the Pythagorean theorem.
Students will use the Pythagorean theorem to find the missing side length in a
coordinate plane.
Teacher: Kandi Barnett
Grade Level: 8
th
grade SDC
Subject: Math Time Frame: 3, 45 minute classes
OBJECTIVE (S) TECHNOLOGIES Content and
Technology
STANDARDS

Students will watch a Khan Academy video
about Pythagoreans theorem. The video will
demonstrate the use of the formula along
with key vocabulary terms. Students will
take notes o the video and share them on
Google Docs.

Teacher will utilize Class Dojo to assist with
classroom management.

Using the mimeo board, the students will
solve for the missing side on a coordinate
plane after a demonstration by the teacher.
Students will share with their table buddy
strategies used to find the missing side. In
groups students will solve problems from
the mimeo board.

Working in pairs, students will use Prezi to
create a power point to demonstrate how to
solve for the missing side or hypotenuse
when one side is missing.

Teacher will utilize Remind 101 that final

Procedure
1. Students will be shown a teacher created video where a student is waiting for
an important text from a girl when his mom takes his phone away because of
behavior. Mom has placed his phone upstairs and the video ends with the boy
outside trying to decide how he will get up to the window and what kind of a
ladder he will need. The students will be asked if they know how to figure out
how mathematically they can help him get his phone.

2. Teacher will present the video about Pythagoreans Theorem www.khanacademy.
org./math/geometry/right_triangles_topic/pyth_theor/v/Pythagorean-
theorem. The video will demonstrate the use of the formula along with key
vocabulary terms. Students will take notes over the video and share them on
Google Docs.

3. Working independently, students will use PowToon to create a video to help
them remember the formula.

4. Students will demonstrate understanding of the applying the formula to solve
for the hypotenuse by playing the Pythagorean Theorem game at
http://www.math-play.com/Pythagorean-Theorem-Game.html,

5. Using the mimeo board, the teacher will then demonstrate how to solve for a
missing side on a coordinate plane. Students will be given the opportunity to
solve problems shown on the mimeo board in small groups.

6. Students will then work in pairs and use Prezi to create a power point to
demonstrate how to solve for the missing side or hypotenuse when one side is
missing.

7. Students will demonstrate mastery of the lesson by working in groups to
produce a newscast using iMovie and an iPad where the Pythagorean theorem
was used to solve a real world problem.

8. Students will be shown the video of the boys dilemma and have to identify what
it is they need to know in order to solve for the slope of ladder. The
information will then be supplied by the teacher and the students will solve the
problem.
