known, once upon a time, as Pulau Pinang or the Isle of the
Betel Nut. Listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in
2008, this virgin paradise has no shortage of cultural sights and
natural scenery. Malaysia's 'Pearl of the Orient' carries a natural
beauty and cultural splendour like no other place. Every year,
thousands of visitors come here to experience the unique cultural
heritage and scenery.
Nicknamed the Pearl of the Orient, Penang is famous for its soft sandy
beaches and is fondly regarded as the food capital of Malaysia. Some
of the most interesting sites of Penang include the sandy beaches of
Tanjung Bungah, the landscape from the summit of Penang Hill and the
vipers in the Snake Temple. The quaint nooks and crannies of
Georgetown and the Tropical Spice Garden the only spice garden in
South East Asia as well as Penangs many flea markets, pasar
malams, KOMTAR and modern shopping malls also merit a visit.
Penang Attractions

Penang Hill
Penang Hill was the first colonial hill station
developed in Peninsular Malaysia.
Comprising Western Hill, Bukit Laksamana,
Tiger Hill, Flagstaff Hill and Government Hill,
it is located six km away from Georgetown.
The hilly and forested area is the state's
primary hill resort.

Batu Ferringhi
One of Penangs most popular destinations
(in fact, its the second most popular
destination after Georgetown), Batu Feringghi
consists of a long stretch of soft, white sandy
beach along a winding road named Jalan
Batu Feringghi, filled with a host of
accommodation and dining options.
Its night market is quite legendary, while its
waters are popular spots for a range of water
sports activities such as parasailing and
windsurfing.

Penang Floating Mosque
Masjid Terapung or the Floating Mosque was
built in 2004 in a bid to replace an older
mosque which was damaged in the years
major tsunami disaster. Situated along
Tanjung Bungahs stretch of beach, the
mosque is an architectural wonder with its
Moorish design, seven-storey-high towering
minarets and 360-degree panoramic view of
the sea. Its the first mosque in the country to
be built on the sea, with pillars and stilts
supporting its majestic structure. Covering an
area of 1,295sqm, it can accommodate up to
1500 people during prayer times.

Penang Botanic Gardens
Penang Botanical Gardens are usually simply
called the Botanic Gardens by Penang
islanders. Also known as the Waterfalls
Gardens, the gardens are located in a valley
along Jalan Kebun Bunga. It is a well
landscaped place that contains a huge
variety of indigenous and exotic plant
species.

Penang Bridge
Penang Bridge may not be an official
sightseeing spot in Penang but it is the sight
that greets most visitors to the island. A
13.5km-long suspension bridge that connects
the island to the mainland at Seberang Perai,
it is considered a Penang landmark, with
locals comparing it to London Bridge.

Penang Butterfly Farm
Opened in 1986, the Penang Butterfly Farm
located in Teluk Bahang is one of Penangs
best known and most popular tourist
attractions. The eight-hectare butterfly
sanctuary houses an impressively varied
collection of butterfly species as well as an
assortment of other insects. The farm sits at
the foot of the Teluk Bahang hills between
the Taman Rimba Park and Teluk Bahang
village. It features more than 4,000 butterflies
from more than 120 groups as well as other
insects and reptiles.

Penang Fort Cornwallis
Fort Cornwallis is the largest standing fort in
Malaysia. Set close to the Esplanade and
Penang Clocktower, the star-shaped bastion
is one of the oldest structures in Penang.
Named after Marquis Charles Cornwallis,
only a set of ten-foot high outer walls remain,
with an enclosed park within.

Penang War Museum
Penang War Museum in Bukit Batu Maung
was a fort built by the British in the 1930s. In
1941 it gained fame when it became the site
where the battle for Penang against the
invading Japanese army was lost. These
days it is a museum open to the public and is
billed as Southeast Asias largest war
museum.
Situated on the road to Teluk Kumbar on
Penangs southern coast, the fort was initially
supposed to be a preserved citadel
constructed as part of a plan to protect the
island from foreign invasion. It is also known
as Muzium Perang Pulau Pinang
