PROB0EM STATEMENT
Automation or automati( (ontrol is the use of various (ontrol s7stems for operating
e8uipment su(h as ma(hiner71 pro(esses in fa(tories1 oilers and heat treating ovens1
s4it(hing in telephone net4or3s1 steering and staili2ation of ships1 air(raft and other
appli(ations 4ith minimal or redu(ed human intervention. Some pro(esses have een
(ompletel7 automated.
,he iggest enefit of automation is that it saves laor1 ho4ever1 it is also used to save
energ7 and materials and to improve 8ualit71 a((ura(7 and pre(ision.
,he term automation1 inspired 7 the earlier 4ord automati( 9(oming from automaton:1
4as not 4idel7 used efore 1#$;1 4hen <eneral Motors estalished the automation
department. +t 4as during this time that industr7 4as rapidl7 adopting feeda(3

fun(tional re8uirement1 a detailed des(ription of all the data inputs and their sour(e1 the
units of measure1 and the range of valid inputs must e spe(ified. All the operations to e
performed on the input data to otain the output should e spe(ified. ,his in(ludes
spe(if7ing the validit7 (he(3 on the input and output data1 parameters affe(ted 7 the
operations1 and e8uation or other logi(al operations that must e used to transform the
inputs to (orresponding output. /or instan(e if there is a formula for (omputing the
output1 it should e spe(ified.
An important part of the spe(ifi(ation is the s7stem ehavior in anormal situations1 li3e
