Exercise: Stress in words

As you probably noticed, in words that have more than

one syllable, one of the syllables is stressed.
Listen and repeat the following words until you feel
satisfied with your pronunciation.
engineer, colonists, prohibited, boston, expensive,
himself, british, parliament, indians, taxation.
Exercise: Clap the rhythm.
Every language has its own rhythm or beat. Two very
different rhythm patterns are represented in the
illustrations below.
If a child were dragging a stick along a picket fence
made of slats of uniform size and spacing, the rhythm
pattern would be regular.
1. First, clap the rhythm pattern you hear in this video.
If another child were dragging a stick along a picket
fence made of slats of varying sizes and spacing, the
rhythm pattern would be less uniform.

1. Listen carefully to the following sentence and count
how many beats it has. Then, repeat the sentence
aloud taking into account the beats.
The sentence has 5 beats.
2. Now try to find the beats of this sentence. Repeat the
sentence as many times as you need to find them:
He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn't have to
do any homework in the evening.
Did you notice this sentence also has 5 beats? But wait a
minute; the first sentence is much shorter than the
second sentence!

Exercise: Content and Function words.
Remember how words that have more than one syllable
have a syllable that is stressed? The same happens with
sentences: we give stress to certain words, which
means we spend more time on these words while
quickly saying the other, less important words.
1. Listen and repeat the following sentences until you
feel satisfied with your pronunciation.
Examples:
PLEASE STAND UP.
THESE JEANS are GREAT.
GIVE me a BURger with FRIES.
I'd LIKE to SEE the HOUSE.
LET me HELP you LIFT the COUCH.
THANKS A LOT for ALL your WORK.
So, what does this mean for your listening and speaking
skills?
Well, first of all, you need to understand which words
we generally stress and which we do not stress.
Basically, CONTENT WORDS are considered stress
words:
Nouns: KITchen, PEter
(most) principal verbs: VIsit, consTRUCT
Adjectives: BEAUtiful, INteresting
Adverbs: OFten, CAREfully
Negatives: CANT, NOT
Wh-question words: WHAT, HOW
Demonstratives: THIS, THOSE
While FUNCTION WORDS are usually not stressed:
Articles: the, a
Auxiliary verbs: don't, am, can, were
Prepositions: before, next to, opposite

Bueno, en primer lugar, es necesario comprender que

2. Let's return to the example presented in the previous
screen to demonstrate how this affects speech. Count
the syllables of these sentences.
The beautiful mountain appeared transfixed in the
distance. (14 syllables)
He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn't have to
do any homework in the evening. (22 syllables)
Even though the second sentence is longer than the
first, the sentences take the same time to speak. This is
because there are 5 stressed words in each sentence.
From this example, you can see that you shouldn't
worry about pronouncing every word clearly to be
understood (native speakers certainly don't). You
should however, concentrate on pronouncing the
stressed words clearly.
Now, when you do the following listening
comprehension activities listen to how the speaker
concentrates on the stressed words rather than giving
importance to all the words. You will soon find that you
can understand and communicate more because you
begin to listen for (and use in speaking) stressed words.
All those words that you thought you didn't understand
are really not crucial for understanding the sense or
making yourself understood. Stressed words are the key
to excellent pronunciation and understanding of
English.

primero , las frases tienen el mismo tiempo para hablar
. Esto es porque hay 5 estresado palabras en cada frase.
A partir de este ejemplo , se puede ver que usted no
debe preocuparse por la pronunciacin de cada palabra
claramente debe entenderse ( hablantes nativos , sin
duda no lo hacen) . Usted debe , sin embargo , se
