SNMP NmAccess Control Requirements in DOCSIS 3.0
PROBLEM:
SNMP Access is disabled by default in DOCSIS 3.0 devices
1
.
Prior to the release of DOCSIS 3.0, cable modem devices provided SNMP access by default, using the
Community Strings of public (Read-Only) and private (Read-Write)
2
. There was no requirement to
configure TLV-11 NmAccess Controls.
With the introduction of DOCSIS 3.0, cable modem devices must now be configured with TLV-11
NmAccess Control Entries in the cable modem configuration file to enable SNMP Access.
WORKAROUND:
Include TLV-11 (NmAccess) entries in the DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem configuration file. The following is a sample (format
is compatible with Motorolas giconfig utility) that allows access via both interfaces (RF and CPE). SNMP access via the
CPE interface requires the inclusion of a TLV-55 entry
3
.
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.4.1 %string = public
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.5.1 %integer = 2
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.6.1 %string = ( the ASCII representation of HEX Value 0xC0)
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.7.1 %integer = 4
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.4.2 %string = private
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.5.2 %integer = 3
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.6.2 %string = ( the ASCII representation of HEX Value 0xC0)
11 (SNMP MIB Object) = 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.2.1.7.2 %integer = 4
Notes:
1.
Per the DOCSIS 3.0 Operations Support System Interface Specification (CM-SP-OSSIv3.0-I06-080215), section
8.5.4.2: SNMP operation after CM registration
2.
Refer to SURFboard Technical Bulletin STB #00-006, SNMP NMS Details for information on setting up NmAccess
TLV-11 Strings.
3.
Refer to SURFboard Technical Bulletin STB #08-009, SNMP CPE Access Control in DOCSIS 3.0 for information on
controlling SNMP access for directly attached CPE devices.
