Introduction
The purpose of this report is to provide the actual situation with the ground bar used in Toning
Housings and its plating. This report also gives us more information about what is the plating process,
benefices, limitations and suggestions to avoid future problems.
Description
This report was born due a surged problem with the plating process of a ground-bar. This bar is
made of copper. Copper is chosen due to its high thermal and electrical conductivity and great
resistance to corrosion.
The natural color of copper is peachy or pinkish-white, with a bright metallic luster but the color of
copper turns green after exposure to air and moisture because the chemical reaction of salts, oxygen
and the copper itself forming a thin layer on the surface known as Patina. Patinas can provide a
protective covering to the material that would otherwise be damaged by corrosion or weathering.
They may also be aesthetically appealing.
n the other hand, the plating process consist in avoid this patina forming !Corrosion". #ut why
remove all this great natural protective cover$ The answer is conductibility.
%es, this natural protective cover of the copper is great& it protects the material of almost everything,
including external 'oints. (f you try to connect something on this ground bar, like a conductive cable,
this protective cover won)t allow an effective conductibility causing a bad connection and a bad
grounding. To avoid this corrosion on the material surface, the pieces are electroplated.
Plating Process
Plating involves the coating of a thin metallic layer onto the surface of a substrate material
*
. There
are several plating methods, and many variations, in our case we use Electroplating.
+lectroplating, also known as electrochemical plating is an electrolytic process in which metal ions
in an electrolyte solution are deposited onto a cathode workpart. The anode is generally made of the
material being plated and thus serves as the source of the plate metal. ,irect current from an external
power supply is passed between the anode and the cathode. The electrolyte is an a-ueous solution
of acids, bases, or salts& it conducts electric current by the movement of plate metal ions in solution.
.or optimum results, parts must be chemically cleaned 'ust prior to electroplating.

The purpose of this report is to survey the current state of scanner technology and to briefly discuss
predicted advancements in the field.
#y examining a range of recently published 'ournal articles, maga/ine articles and internet sites on
the topic of scanners this report describes the main types of scanners in common use today and
examines their performance in relation to four criteria4 resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and
software. The report then considers the effect of further technological advances in these four areas,
as well as the deployment of new sensor technology on the future development of scanners.
The first scanner, initially referred to as a 5reading machine5, was developed in *678 by 9acob
:abinow, a :ussian born engineer. The device could scan printed material and then compare each
character to a set of standards in a matrix using, for the first time, the ;best match principle; to
determine the original message !#latner, .leishman and :oth *66<, p.=". This reading machine was
to form the basis for the development of current scanning, sorting and processing machines.
>n early improvement on the reading machine was the drum scanner. These scanners used a type of
scanning technology called photomultiplier tubes !P?T". ,rum scanners are still used in industry
today because of the high -uality images they produce. The development of smaller, more
economical scanners such as desktop scanners and scanners for domestic use followed the drum
scanner as the number of computer users increased and computer technology advanced.
3canners can now capture images from a wide variety of two and three dimensional sources. These
images are converted to digitised computer files that can be stored on a hard-drive or floppy disk.
@ith the aid of specific software, these images can then be manipulated and enhanced by the user. (t
is now possible to deploy electronic ac-uisition to create an entire layout !including all graphic
elements" from the same computer. This means manual stripping is no longer re-uired !3canners,
digital cameras and photo C,s A888". 3canners are considered an invaluable tool for adding
graphics and text to documents and have been readily adopted by both business and domestic users.
