Manitoba Transfusion Medicine Best Practice Resource Manual for Nursing October 2006
PHYSICIAN/AUTHORIZED PRACTITIONER WILL DETERMINE IF TRANSFUSION SHOULD CONTINUE
Minor Symptoms?
Allergic reaction? Febrile reaction?
On physician/authorized practitioner direction:
Treat with Diphenhydramine 25-50
mg IV or PO (pediatric 0.5-1.0 mg/Kg
IV or PO to a maximum of 50 mg)
Resume transfusion cautiously
Remain with patient and observe for the
first 15 minutes after resuming transfusion
Hives/rash ONLY covering 25% body
(no other symptoms)
If remainder of transfusion is
uneventful, send to Blood Bank/
Lab as soon as possible:
A completed Transfusion
Reaction Investigation
Form (CM105)
Blood specimens not required
IMMEDIATELY
Stop the transfusion
if patient develops
any Serious Signs
and Symptoms,
follow serious signs
and symptoms
pathway.
