Course Description
These courses emphasize the development of literacy, communication, and critical
and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students
will study the content, form, and style of a variety of informational and graphic texts,
as well as literary texts from Canada and other countries, and create oral, written,
and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An
important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity.

Course Theme: Choices and Survival

Big Ideas Why do We Study English!?

We read and study various types of texts, of increasing complexity, to gain a
better understanding of people and their relationships with the world, and to
empathize and make connections with differing perspectives.

We use speaking and listening skills in English to express ourselves, to
understand others, and to make connections with the world around us.

We study English to communicate ideas, opinions, and perspectives in writing to
persuade, to inform, to analyse, and to entertain those around us, and to make
connections with others in our world.

We study the media because it is a dominant and pervasive environment that we
have to interact with in a critical way to make informed decisions. We create
media texts to persuade, to inform, to analyse, and to entertain those around us,
and to make connections with others in our world.

We reflect on our learning and skill development in order to have a fuller and
richer learning experience.

Essential Learnings
To earn this credit, students must demonstrate the following essential learnings:

Writing requires appropriate topic, purpose, audience, tone and form; selection of
main ideas and discussion of those ideas and supporting details are essential to
concise and effective analysis.

Organization, editing, and revising are critical steps when producing any written
task(s), presentation, or media product(s).

Written and media texts produce meaning and messages differently based on form,
including textual features and stylistic devices.

Using a variety of strategies will improve reading fluency.

Listening and speaking skills are vital aspects of communication.

Media texts are created with an awareness of purpose, audience, and message; they
can contain biases and perspectives.

Students should reflect on individual strengths and weaknesses, and develop
purposeful learning strategies to demonstrate mastery of the essential learning.

Evidence of Learning
Students will demonstrate their learning through the following activities, tasks,
assessments, and/or evaluations:

Formal Writing
Informal Writing
Presentations/Seminars
Tests
Media Artifacts
Class Discussions
Book Talks
Story Telling

Course Evaluation
Student work will be evaluated using a balance of the Ministrys four achievement
chart categories: knowledge & understanding, thinking & inquiry, application, and
communication. Throughout the course, teachers will gather evidence of student
learning through observations, conversations, and student-produced work.

Seventy percent (70%) of the final mark will come from term work, and thirty
percent (30%) will come from final evaluations. The final evaluations are
opportunities for students to integrate and synthesize knowledge and skills acquired
throughout the course and to demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the
essential learnings. Report card grades will reflect the students most consistent
level of achievement, with consideration given to more recent evidence.

Guidelines for Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting
1. Learning Skills
The Learning Skills and Work Habits section of the provincial report card is an
integral part of a students learning. Students will be assessed in the following
areas:

Responsibility Independent Work Organization
Initiative Collaboration Self-Regulation

The following scoring system is used for Learning Skills:
E=Excellent; G=Good; S=Satisfactory; N=Needs Improvement

2. Missing Work
Students are expected to submit all evidence of learning by the assigned date.
(a) The Learning Skills section of the provincial report card will be used to reflect
incidents of late and missing work.
(b) At the time of entering a report card grade, students with missing evidence
of learning may receive an I (I = insufficient evidence) on their report
card and will not receive a credit (Grades 9 and 10), or may be assigned a
mark between 35% and 45% (Grades 11 and 12) and will not be granted a
credit for the course.

3. Cheating and Plagiarism
Students are expected to submit their own original, best work to demonstrate
their learning.
(a) The Learning Skills section of the provincial report card will be used to reflect
incidents of cheating and plagiarism.
(b) Students caught cheating on tests or assignments will receive an I (I =
insufficient evidence), and will be required to demonstrate their learning
through an alternative evaluation.
(c) Students who plagiarize may be required to re-do all or part of the
assignment (or evaluation) or complete an alternative assignment (or
evaluation). The students work may be treated as Missing Work (see

above). As well, potential consequences for plagiarizing include disciplinary
action (e.g., suspension) and loss of access to academic awards and
scholarship opportunities.

Loaned Items:
Novels, anthologies, and textbooks will be signed out according to the JHSS
processes. Students will be held entirely responsible for any damage or markings
beyond what is reasonable with careful use. If loaned items are lost, the student is
responsible for replacement costs.

Google Drive:
All students in the WRDSB have been provided with access to Google Drive and
several accompanying applications. Students may access this account with their
school login and password at http://google.wrdsb.ca. It is highly recommended
that students make use of their Google Drive, particularly for collaborating on group
projects.

This includes the basics like paper and pen (which you are required to bring!) but
also ipads, smart phones, laptops etc. If you bring these devices to class you are
