The month of June came in like a lion, producing a hail storm like nothing New York has seen in a decades.
The city of Amsterdam, NY was struck on 5-22-14 around 4 in the afternoon. Although estimates vary, the
general consensus amongst insurance carriers and collision shop owners is that the claim count runs into
the thousands. Not only has this storm left hundreds of homes, but also thousands of vehicles damaged
throughout the Amsterdam and Broadalbin, NY communities. Last estimates ranged in the neighborhood of
5,000 vehicle claims throughout the impacted area. Collision shops in the immediate area are booking 2
months out with hail repair work and because of this, anxious vehicle owners have begun to flock to
outlying areas in hopes of booking an appointment quicker.

This storm is not for the faint of heart. Initial damage reports were for 3 and 4 hail! That is uncommon for
New York State. A lot of the vehicles require combo work. Empire currently has 35 Hail Repair Specialists
working diligently to PDR as many panels as possible in an attempt to keep the collision shops from backing
up. However, the damage requires the collision shops to replace a lot of hoods, deck lids and moldings. Our
technicians are performing push to paints to try to salvage as many roofs as possible so shops can avoid
replacing them. A push for paint is required when the panel is damaged so badly that it cannot be repaired
to completion utilizing PDR but the technician can still work the panel to an acceptable point. Generally we
will repair everything that we can and leave a few spots that the collision shop will finish. It basically keeps
the shop from having to cut the roof off. A push for paint is not a completed repair. It always requires
finishing work (i.e. Sanding and painting) by the shop. All in all Empire has 14 corporate employees on the
ground overseeing 22 Collision Shops between the Amsterdam and Albany, NY areas.

Additionally, these claims are reaching as far as Rochester, Binghamton, Cortland and Granville, NY.
Although our efforts are currently focused on our Amsterdam area customers, Empire stands ready and
