CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This Chapter presents analyses and interprets data collected in the course

of investigation through survey questionnaires randomly among the

employees/workers of Mindanao Container Terminal of Philippine Veterans

Investment Development Corporation.

Problem one: What are the Biological, Demographic and Socio-

cultural Factors of the employees/workers of Mindanao Container Terminal

in terms of age, sex, ethnic background, religious affiliation, participation

of company’s activities and the availability of company’s privileges?

A. BIOLOGICAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, SOCIO-CULTURAL FACTORS

Table 1 shows the allocation of the employees of Mindanao Container

Terminal based on age. Where majority of the respondents or forty percent

(40%) of them came from the 30-39 years old age bracket; followed by another

fourteen (14) or twenty three percent (23%) of the respondents came from the

40-49 age bracket. Moreover, eleven (11) or nineteen percent (19%) of them

belong to the 20-29 age bracket while another eleven (11) or eighteen percent

(18%) of them are from the 50-59 age bracket.

This simply indicates that majority or forty percent (40%) of the

respondents employed are in the stage of middle adulthood. Hence the

company’s predilections of employees are the more experienced individuals but

not that old enough not to perform certain task which are formidable for elderly

people. Moreover, within this age bracket (30-39) according to a recent research

(http://science.slashdot.org/article) “At age 39 our brain is at its peak speed

wherefore age after that brain goes downhill intellectually.” Thus, the Mindanao

container Terminal’s preference for their employees was mostly individuals

whose intellectual and physical capacity is still at its peak of functioning.

Table 2 shows the distribution of the employees of Mindanao Container

Terminal in terms of the worker’s gender or sex. Wherein, majority of the

respondents or sixty two percent (62%) of them are males while twenty three (23)

or thirty eight percent left (38%) are females.

This simply entail that majority of the respondents are males which

comprises sixty two percent (62%) of the total respondents. This indicates that

males are the preferable workers of Mindanao Container Terminal in term of sex;

wherefore the usual nature of work of the company demands a lot of physical

strength and ability that females cannot provide. Moreover, females were also

needed especially in offices and in the administration department.

Table 3 Shows that majority or twenty three (23) or fourteen percent

(14%) said that they belong to the Cagay-anon, or are homegrown individuals

from Cagayan de Oro. Followed by eleven respondents (11) or eighteen point

thirty three percent (18.33%) said that they have originated from the Tagalog

ethnicity. Another nine (9) respondents or fifteen percent (15%) of them claimed

that they are from the ethinicty of Higa-onons. Another six (6) or ten percent

(10%) of the respondents assert that they came from Bohol as “Bol-anons”.

Another seven (7) or eleven point sixty seven percent (11.67%) of the

respondents said that they are homegrown Tagoloanons. Another six (6) or ten

percent (10%) of the respondents said that they came from Cebu. Another six (6)

respondents or ten percent (10%) of the respondents said that they originated

from Camiguin. And lastly, there is only one (1) or a point one percent (0.1%) of

the respondents said that they came from the province of Bukidnon.

This means that to analyze it all; people from Camiguin, Cagayan de Oro,

Higa-onons, Bukidnon, and Tagoloan comprise of forty-three (43) respondents or

seventy one point sixty-six percent (71.66%) of the said respondents, wherein it

certainly shows that people from the locality of the region 10 dominate the

number of employees of Mindanao Container Terminal. Therefore, the local

people of region 10 are held to be globally competitive in terms of port

management and skills.

Table 4 shows the distribution of the employees of Mindanao Container

Terminal based on the religious affiliation. Wherein, majority of the respondents

or forty one of them (41) comprising sixty-eight point thirty three percent

(68.33%) said that they are Roman Catholics. Then three (3) or five percent (5%)

are Islams; two (2) or three percent (3%) are Iglesia ni Cristos; two (2) or three

percent (3%) are from the United church of Christ in the Philippines while four (4)

or six percent (6%) are Filipinista and five (5) or eight point thirty three (8.33%)

were born again Christians. And lastly, another five percent (5%) or three (3) of

them are Baptist

This means that majority or sixty eight point thirty three (68.33%) of the

respondents claimed that their religious affiliation is in Roman Catholicism

which obviously; most of the employees were living within the range or region

10, which is apparently a predominant Christian area. Moreover, according to

Chapter 4, Table 3, the majority ethnicity background among the MCT workers

is kagayanons wherein it also corresponds to what the chapter 2 had stated

that, majority of the people living in Cagayan de Oro City are Roman Catholics.

Other religions include; Christians of various sect, Muslims, Buddhist and

others.

Table 5 shows the biological, demographic and socio-cultural factors of

the employees of Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the participation of

the workers towards company’s activities. Wherein, there are thirty seven (37) or

sixty one point sixty-seven percent (61.67%) of the respondents said yes while

twenty three (23) or thirty eight point thirty- three percent (38.33%) of them who

said no.

This means that majority of the employees or sixty one point sixty seven

percent (61.67%) said they do participate in the company’s activity. Thus, there is

an effective management of the company towards their workers with proper

dissemination of information and activity implementation was reflected by the

workers participation with regarding to these activities. And moreover, the

company was effective in upholding these activities and was thriving enough to

stimulate interest among employees of MCT.

Table 6 shows the biological, demographic and socio-cultural factors of

employees of Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of workers patronization of

the company’s health privileges. Wherein, there are forty (40) or sixty-six point

sixty-seven percent (66.67%) of the respondents said yes and they did avail of

the company’s privileges while there are twenty (20) or thirty- three point thirty-

three percent (33.33%) who said no, they did not avail the company’s privileges.

This means that majority of the workers of Mindanao Container Terminal

were enjoying the privileges offered by the company for their welfare and benefit.

Therefore, the company assumed a token economy system; wherein the

reinforcement they gave towards the employees was by tendering useful

satisfactory privileges with the suitable services these workers do provide.

Problem two: What are the Environmental factors of the

employees/workers of Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the

company’s working facilities, safety against accidental hazards, sources of

food, water supply, toilet facility, garbage and refuse disposal system,

drainage system, social and health programs, safety programs/drills, safety

rules/policies and the communication and transportation system of the

company?

B. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Table 7 shows the environmental factors of the employees/workers in

terms of the company’s working facilities. Wherein, there are about twenty nine

(29) or forty eight point thirty three percent (48.33%) of the respondents

answered that their working facilities are doing excellent while twenty nine (29) or

forty eight point three percent (48.33%) answered that they do have good

working facilities and two (2) or 3.33% of the respondents said that their working

facilities is in moderate condition. Moreover, none (0) or zero percent of the

respondents answered that company’s working facilities is not healthy.

This means that in this category; there are two majorities or two got a forty

eight point thirty three percentage result (48.33%) in terms of the company’s

working facilities. Another said that the company does have excellent working

facilities while the other forty eight point thirty three percent (48.33%) answered

that the working facilities are in good condition. Thus, there is a very big

possibility that the employees were well provided with working facilities that offers

a big help in the work place that makes strenuous work more handy and feasible

Table 8 shows the environment factors of the employees/workers in terms

of their safety towards accident hazard. There are about sixteen (16) or twenty

six point sixty seven (26.67%) of the respondents answered that they have an

excellent safety precautions towards accident hazards. Moreover, thirty eight (38)

or sixty three point thirty three percent (63.33%) of the respondents said that

company’s safety towards accident hazard is in good implementation while six

(6) or ten percent (10%) answered moderately well and none (0) or zero percent

(0%) said that their company’s safety towards accident hazard is not healthy.

This means that majority or sixty three point thirty three percent (63.33%)

of the respondents said that the company does have good safety precautions

towards accident hazards. Hence, this ensures that the respondents are well

provided with the good chance of avoiding any accidental hazards in their

working fields even though in a company like MCT; accidental hazards are

inevitable. However the company is floundering hard to assure the worker’s

safety and welfare by scrupulously implementing safety precautions.

Moreover, because Mindanao Container Terminal is an industrial business

therefore “Because of the kinds of jobs they do, industrial plant workers often

put themselves and their health at risk.” according to

http://www.maacenter.org/asbestos/workplace/industrialworkers.php and due

to that, Mindanao Container Terminal should pay much attention towards

safety of their workers/employees.

Table 9 shows the environment factors of the employees/workers in

terms of the sources of food. There are seventeen (17) or twenty eight point

thirty three percent (28.33%) of the respondents answered that the company

does have excellent sources of food, while thirty six (36) or sixty percent

(60%) of the respondents answered that they do have good food sources,

while seven (7) or eleven point sixty seven percent of the employees said that

the food sources were in a moderate condition and none (0) or zero percent

of the respondents said that their food sources is not healthy.

This means that majority or twenty eight point thirty three (28.33%) of the

respondents said that the company does have very good sources of food. Thus,

the respondents are able to nourish themselves with safe foods that the food

court of the company does provide. And with this finding; this ensures the safety

and health of the employees in terms of their nutrition.

Table 10 shows that the environment factors of the employees/workers in

terms of Water Supply. There are twenty three (23) or thirty eight point thirty

three (38.33%) percent of the respondents answered excellent in terms of the

company’s water supply, and about thirty (30) or fifty percent (50%) of the

employees said that they do have good water supply while seven (7) or eleven

point sixty seven percent of the workers answered that the water supply was in a

moderate condition and about zero (0) or zero percent said that they do not have

a healthy water supply

This means that majority or fifty percent (50%) of the respondents said that

the company does have a good water supply. Thus the employees are

assured of their safety and health with the company’s supply of water.

Moreover, these employees do have a good chance not to be contaminated

by any waterborne disease that came from the company’s water supply. And

also according to a statement in chapter 2 about the profile of Cagayan de

Oro, the water services is provided by the Cagayan de Oro Water District

(COWD), wherein it was the first water district to be established in the entire

country (www.cagayandeoro.gov) which was proven safe; wherefore as the

first one to be established, they ought to be experts in supplying quality water

to its consumers.

Table 11 shows the Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the company’s working area under the

category of the sanitation and condition of the toilet facilities; where there are

forty one (41) or sixty eight point thirty three percent (68.33%) who said that their

Toilet facilities are in good condition. Moreover, there are thirteen (13) or twenty

one point sixty seven percent (21.67%) of the respondents said that their

company’s toilet facilities are very good and are in excellent condition while there

are six (6) or ten percent (10%) of the respondents said that their toilet facilities

are just sufficient and moderate and none or a zero percent (0%) answered the

toilet facilities were not healthy.

This means that majority or sixty eight point thirty three percent (68.33%)

of the respondents said that the company’s toilet facility is in a good and sanitary

condition. Obviously, everyone was satisfied with the company’s toilet facilities,

where the company really had sought after the welfare of their workers even to

the smallest details including the toilet facilities. This also means that they do

prevent proliferation of etiologic agents of any disease by inhibiting common

breading areas of microorganisms through maintaining proper toilet sanitation.

Moreover, according to the http://www.ifh-homehygiene.org, “the bathroom and

toilet are communal areas of the home thus is the main culprit for the spread of

infection from one family member to another if basic hygiene standards are not

observed wherefore the toilet is a common habitat for pathogens and

microorganisms causing infection.

Table 12 shows the Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the company’s working area under the

garbage and refused disposal where there are twenty four (24) or forty percent

(40%) of the respondents who answered that the company’s garbage and

refused disposal were in excellent condition while twenty six (26) or forty three

percent (43%) answered that they do have good refused disposal and about only

ten (10) or seventeen percent of the respondents said that garbage disposal

were in moderate condition and none or zero percent (0%) answered that the

garbage disposal were not healthy

This means that Majority or forty three percent (43%) of the respondents

said that there are the company’s refuse and garbage disposal is thrown in a

good way. Hence, the company is knowledgeable enough that promoting proper

waste disposal and cleanliness of the environment contributes to the safety and

health of their employees which is concurrent to what the OLOF determinants of

health had stated; that a person’s health is determined by his circumstances and

his environment

Table 13 shows the Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the company’s working area under the

category of the company’s drainage system. There are twenty eight (28) or forty

six point sixty seven (46.67%) percent respondent said that their drainage

system were in an excellent condition. There are twenty seven (27) or forty five

percent (45%) of the total respondents responded that they have a good

drainage system while four (4) or six point sixty seven percent (6.67%) the

drainage were in a moderate condition and one (1) or a one point sixty seven

percent (1.67%) answered not healthy.

This means that Majority or forty six point sixty seven percent (46.67%) of

the respondents said that they do have a good drainage system in the company.

Therefore, the company is environmental friendly which also means that they

prevent flood especially during rainy season. This also means that the company

was fulfilling there vision which is to a progressive industrial community that is

socially, economically & environmentally sound contributing to the growth and

development of the country.

Table 14 shows Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of Presence of social and health facilities

of the company. Twenty one (21) or twenty one point sixty seven percent

(21.67%) of the respondents said that their social and health facilities were in a

very good condition; thus, it is adequate and healthy while thirty three (33) or

sixty eight point thirty three percent (68.33%) said it was in a good condition.

Moreover, six (6) of the respondents or a ten percent (10%) of them answered

that the facilities were in a moderately good then none or a zero percent (0%) of

them answered not healthy in terms of the social and heath facilities of the

company.

This means that Majority or sixty eight point thirty three percent (68.33%)

of the respondents said that the social and health facilities were in good

condition. With this, we say that majority of them knows that there were presence

of social and health facilities (like presence of basketball court for recreational

activities) and a majority of them also joined the intramurals for enjoyment and

also to enhance their wellness and can be considered as a flexibility exercise for

proper blood circulation and muscle endurance.

Table 15 shows the Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of social and health programs of the

company. There are thirty-six (36) or sixty percent (60.00%) of the total

respondents said that they do have good social and health programs. And there

are about eighteen (18) or thirty percent (30.00%) of the respondents said that

the programs were in very good implementation while six (6) or a ten percent

(10.00%) of the respondents said that the programs were moderately good while

none or zero percent (0%) answered that the social and health programs were

not healthy

This means that majority or sixty percent (60.00%) of the respondents said

that the company has a good implementation of social and health programs in

Mindanao Container Terminal. The table itself simply indicates that the Mindanao

container Terminal are implementing good social and health programs and so

perhaps a lot of workers do participate and take part in social and health

programs of the company wherefore they were also informed enough of the

rationales of these applied programs for their health and safety.

Table 16 shows the Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the company’s safety programs or

drills. There are sixteen (16) or twenty six point sixty seven percent (26.67%) of

the total respondents said that the company’s preparation for safety programs or

drills are in a very good execution and thirty nine (39) or sixty five percent

(65.00%) answered that the company’s having a good safety programs and drills

while five (5) or eight point thirty three (8.33%) of the respondents answered

these programs were moderately good and none or zero percent (0%) stated that

the drills and programs were not healthy.

This implicates that majority or sixty five percent (65%) of the respondents

answered that the company’s safety programs and drills were in good provision

thus the company’s forestalling any harm and danger by executing safety

programs and drill to guide employees and workers in cases of emergency;

hence, adding solution to every danger inevitable within the realms of the

company.

Table 17 shows the Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the condition of the safety rules and

policies of the company. There are twenty-eight (28) respondents or forty-six

point sixty seven (46.67%) of the total respondents said that the company does

have very good rules and policies for safety purposes. Where there are also thirty

(30) or fifty percent (50%) of the respondents said that rules and policies for

safety were good while two (2) or three point thirty-three percent (3.33%) said

that the rules and policies were in moderate condition and none or zero percent

(0%) answered that the rules and policies were not healthy

This means that majority or fifty percent (50.00%) of the respondents said

that there is a good execution of rules and policies of the company pertaining to

the workers’ Health and Safety. “Because of the kind of jobs they do, industrial

plant workers often put themselves and their health at risk” According to

Noxious chemicals and other hazardous materials, such as asbestos, are

often present in industrial plants; therefore company’s health and safety rules

and policies needs to focus on how the workers environment can be designed to

forestall further harm and injuries.

Table 18 shows the Environmental factors of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of the means of transportation of the

company. There are nineteen (19) or thirty one point sixty seven percent

(31.67%) of the respondents said that the company does have very good means

of transportation. And there are thirty-six (36) or sixty percent (60.00%)

responded that the means of communication was in good condition while only

five (5) or eight point thirty-three percent (8.33%%) of the respondents said that

the company’s means of transportation is moderately good and there are none or

zero percent (0%) of the respondents stated that they don’t have good means of

transportation.

This means that majority or sixty percent (60%) of the respondents said

that the company does have good means of transportation facilities. Thus, there

is a feasible network and linkage between employees and necessary locations in

referring emergencies and accidents, therefore adding a contribution to health

and safety to transport and refer emergency cases to the proper locations safely

and without a waste of time.

Problem three: What are the Health and Medical history of the

employees/workers of Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of previous

hospitalization/illnesses, hereditary diseases, value towards health and

health chief complaints?

C. Health and Medical History

Table 19 shows the Health Medical History of the employees of Mindanao

Container Terminal in terms of history of work related past hospitalization or

illness. There are twenty seven (27) or forty five percent (45 %) who said that

they have history of work related past hospitalization/ illness. There are thirty

three (33) or fifty five percent (55%) who said that they have no history of work

related past hospitalization or illness.

This means that majority of the respondents of the Mindanao Container

Terminal are healthy and conscious about their health. And also we can say that

Mindanao Container Terminal mostly employs workers who were physically,

emotionally and mentally fit uncompromising the possibilities of emergencies and

the insufficiency of work these health problems will cause to the unhealthy

workers/employees.

Table 20 shows the health and Medical History of the employees of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of history of any heredity diseases (self

and family members). There are about thirty five (35) or fifty eight point thirty

three percent (58.33%) who said that they do have a propensity to hereditary

diseases towards self and family while there are only twenty five (25) or forty one

point sixty seven percent (41.67%) said that they don’t have the tendency in

acquiring hereditary disease wherefore their ancestors don’t have any.

This means that majority of the respondents which is thirty five (35) or

comprises fifty eight point thirty three percent (58.33) have a genetically

predisposing illness within their family and are prone to develop that

disease/illness in the future, which can be a factor that may hinder them to work

effectively and which may predispose them in increased risk for accidents

especially during times of work.

Table 21 shows the health and medical history of the employees of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of hereditary diseases (self and family

members). Majority of the respondents or forty-two point nine percent (42.9%) of

them said that they do have Hypertensive propensity within their family. While

another ten or (10) or twenty-eight point six percent (28.6%) of them claimed that

their families have inherited Diabetes Mellitus. Moreover, there are about seven

(7) or twenty percent (20%) confirmed that their family had a history of

Cardiovascular Disease and there are three (3) or eight point six (8.6%) of them

said that they had a family member who had cancer

This means that majority of them or forty two point nine percent (42.9%) of

them have a hypertensive tendency from their family history. Therefore, they

must take primary precautions and lifestyle modifications in forestalling this

hypertensive propensity. Medical check-ups and monitoring of blood pressure at

least twice a weak must be implemented, for them to know if they are already

hypertensive because according to JNC 7 or Joint National Committee states

that in order to be diagnose as hypertensive one must have 3 consistent

abnormal readings within two weeks of monitoring.

Table 22 shows the Health and Medical History of the employees of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of how much they value their health.

Wherein, majority or ninety one point seven percent (91.7%) of the respondents

claimed that they value health very much. Moreover, there are about five (5) or

eight point three percent (8.3%) of the respondents who said that they value

health moderately while none or zero percent (0%) of the respondents answered

that they do not value health that much

This means that the majority of the respondents which comprises of fifty

five percent (55%) or ninety one point seven percent (91.7%) knows the essential

and vital role of their health in their work productivity. Thus, when they value their

health very much, there’s a great possibility that MCT is having healthy

individuals employed in their company; individuals who are health conscious

enough and are not oblivious to health hazards and dangers. Moreover, we also

find out that many of the said respondents goes to the clinic to have a regular

medical check-up and to monitor their wellness/disease with regards to their

health condition.

Table 23 shows the health and Medical History of the employees of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of complaints regarding health condition.

There are forty five (45) or seventy five percent (75%) of the respondents who

have complaints regarding their health condition while there are fifteen (15) or

twenty five percent (25%) of the respondents claimed to have no complaints

regarding their health condition.

This means that majority of the respondents or forty five percent (45%) of

them have complaints in terms of their health condition wherein the company

should pay attention more wherefore; many employees suffered or acquired

illness or disease from their nature or field of work. Hence, even though no

matter how much the company forestall any discrepancies of the workers health;

still these health problems are inevitable with the nature of work, itself.

Table 24 shows the Health and Medical History of the employees of

Mindanao Container Terminal in terms of complained illnesses. Majority or

twenty eight point nine (28.9%) complained of low back pain. Then another

eleven (11) or twenty four point four percent (24.4%) complained of cough and

colds. While about five (5) or eleven point one percent (11.1%) has eye problems

and four (4) or eight point nine percent (8.9%) claimed to have sleep problems

instead. Furthermore there are six (6) or thirteen point three percent (13.3%)

claiming that they are undergoing a lot of stress; physically, mentally and even

emotionally while another six (6) or thirteen point three percent complained of

having persistent fevers.

This means that majority or seventy five percent (75%) of the respondents

who said that they have complaints regarding their health condition; most of them

experienced low back pain; especially that most of the respondents are usually

involved in strenuous activities which further leads to a conclusion that most of

them are at risk for osteoarthritis and skeletomuscular impairment. Wherefore of

these risks, the company should take some necessary actions alleviating this

common complaints especially that; according to the (the Workers Health &

Safety Centre of 2004), “Musculoskeletal disorders remain the most common

classification of injury suffered by workers accounting for more than 40 percent

of claims, it was noticed by the Ontario’s Workplace Safety and Insurance

Board.”
